Cause and Effect.... love it Jared..... that second arm for the bobble head will come in handy.

I like how you started with using the camera meter to address the people saying that you should just use auto metering. Yes, spot metering will be more accurate than evaluative, but I like to see you setting up the shot manually to get it right. It reminds me of my old math classes, where we had to show our work.

Ah Jared. Watching you sometimes can be painful because we know that one day you are going to give yourself a heart attack. But I keep watching you because when you get into technical details and reviews you are one of the best out there. This series - Perfect Exposure in 3 shots or less - is one of the best tutorials on the Internet. Keep on jammin'.
@Bloggerky7 жыл бұрын
Thanks. If my recollection is right, in earlier videos, you shot in manual so that you started out without knowing what the camera's metering system would suggest. Here, you started out with a metered result, presumably because it's well understood that cameras generally underexpose in snow and you wanted to show that the meter isn't always right. And since the meter isn't always right, as photographers we are called upon to THINK about what's going on, and not just assume the camera will always nail it. Useful series.

I have the LUX light meter app on my iPhone (not sure if theres an android version) in situations like snow or shooting bright sunlit scenes from the shade it is far better than the cameras meter in any mode. Its cheaper & more convenient than a separate light meter as well.

Seeing the histogram of the first shot at 2:12 can help you to get the perfect exposure in the 2nd shot already. Looking at the peek between the midtown and the highlight bar, reveals that the snow should be in the whites, close to clipping. The distance is a bit more than a full stop. My next exposure choice would have been 1/800s.

Royston Kane I just climbed Ben Nevis today (the tallest mountain in the British isles) and it was snowing a blizzard the whole time, and everything above 500ft was covered in snow. I had all my gear with me and took photos the whole time. So yes, it can be relevant to certain locations

IT's called sarcasm folks. I understand Jared took advantage of a late winter snowstorm to do a free instructional video and that the NY area is not the center of the world.

I hear that adjusting your exposure compensation would work as well. Is that a possibility, and if so, how would that affect the shutter speed, aperture, or ISO settings?

Jared, in the case of shooting wildlife (in my case mostly deers), with snow, foggy whitty atmosphere, quite often at 400_600mm range (coupled to a D500), I have to have a high aperture speed. So I'm often at 1/1000 sec or more. What would you be your advice for proper exposure? Using high ISO will create noise. Should I overexpose a bit? Thanks!

How to find it in no shot? Get your modern SLT or mirrorless, use A or M or any mode you like and adjust the exposure compensation dial until your viewfinder shows the snow as white :-D Done. DSLRs make so many things complicated :-D
@hardrockjimi7 жыл бұрын
dpcriss, SLT and mirrorless cameras have full time live exposure preview aka WYSIWYG. DUH! Come on genius. ; )
@Lofote7 жыл бұрын
@dpcriss: A beginner should not buy a DSLR, but a modern camera. Easy as that. You can learn much easier with an EVF.
@Lofote7 жыл бұрын
well then, lets all drop digital photography, just because many learned it in the film days... Doh :-D EVFs help a lot for the beginner. (By the way, does not have to be mirrorless, you can of course get a DSLT) Jared is very stubborn in many things I have to say. He thinks that there is only one way in many things, very absolute... THats just the way he is... ;)
@Lofote7 жыл бұрын
@dpcriss: well you are wrong... I am a photographer loving modern tech. DSLT is just one possibility, of course you can also work with Fuji X. Olympus also makes pretty innovative cameras. Etc. Plus why should a user of brand X only watch videos from other photographers that use brand X? Makes no sense. Strange, how you think ;)...
@Lofote7 жыл бұрын
By the way, a camera with an EVF can actually help you to see that you are making blurry pictures due to long shutter speed. You are aware that you can automatically playback the last shot? Helps a lot, you also see if the model just blinked etc. Can save you LOTS of time and make more shots work :)

how to get perfect exposure: buy mirrorless. What you see through EVF - you get, Literally. Snow might throw off the sensors, but it can't fool human eye.

Technology is not a crutch. How is it people think that the harder it is to get the desired results, the better you are. Get real man. The end results is what matters. If harder is better. by all means do a 3 shot with a 35mm or better yet a Fuji Instax camera.
