Jared Polin awesome info, thank you! Do you have another video or information you could point me to that similarly describes a scale of adjustment for stops of light when zooming in and out with a non-constant aperture lens? For example, when using the 16-80mm on the Nikon D500, I'm often zooming all the way in from 16mm to 80mm and just want to know if there's a reliable rule of thumb of how much shutter speed or other settings I have to adjust between the two ends of the lens's focal lengths (as opposed to wasting time guessing how much shutter speed I have to adjust when zooming in). Thanks!

Back in the good old days of analog photography if you didn't have a lightmeter with you, or in your camera, or a battery for it, you'd use the sunny 16 rule - sunny midday is F16 1/125 exposure on ISO100 film. Are you shooting in a snowy or sandy area? Lower the aperture to F22, or raise the shutter speed to 1/250, or get ISO50 film. It's cloudy? Use F8, or 1/60, or ISO200 film. The settings on these cameras were made so you could easily adjust exposure in steps (which is what you use the EVS setting today, EV-1 is basically the same as going from F16 to F22 or from 1/250 to 1/125 etc.) without needing a light meter. Some of todays cameras of course have different settings that fuck with these rules, but in general most of the time you still adjust exposure in steps, with each full step in any setting being equal to a full step in any other setting.

As a beginner hobbyist, these are honestly some of the most helpful videos and have really helped me stop and think rather than just messing with the settings on live view until it looks about right. They've really helped me get better at guessing a good starting point (rather than being totally off) for whatever I'm trying to photograph. I always feel like I "get it" after watching one of these and it makes me excited to take more pictures and apply what I learned!

Your videos, more than any other KZbin photography person, have taught me the most about photography. Other photography people, such as Thomas Heaton, are very entertaining. I've seen him using these methods to build a perfect exposure but you're the one who explains it and writes it out.

I cannot believe how good this worked...I have an old POS camera "Kodak easyshare Z1012 IS" i took the photo (in sorta low light) and came out (with flash) over exposed...set my camera to your first manual settings, and black as yours did...then made same adjustments and OMG the picture came out perfect....THANK YOU SO MUCH AWESOME VID

Finally I've figured out the holy trinity of exposure. All these years I've been doing it in trial and error (and it was a hit or miss) - good enough for stationery subjects, but not insects. Finally you helped me to mathematically understand the correlation between the 3 variables

I've been shooting for two years now - I remember doing this when I first started because I couldn't for the life of me figure out how to manipulate my controls in "manual" mode. I finally switched over to "auto" to find out the ball park that I needed to be in. Thanks for the reminder - I can use this method when I'm shooting in front of clients to dial in quickly. Thanks Bro!

More people need to see this and find out how easy it is to shoot manual. They day someone told me that turning the aperture wheel up 7 clicks and the shutter speed down 7 would give the same exposure was the day I stopped being worried about shooting manual. And with RAW, you have so much room for error while learning.
