What does vermiculite do ?
@YellowCase20243 күн бұрын
Do you use it on all seeds ?
@MadAboutGardening2 күн бұрын
It just acts as an alternative to soil to cover over the seeds. It holds on to some moisture at the surface of the tray so seeds don't dry out too quickly. It also allows some light in so that seeds that need light to germinate are able to grow too.

Great tour. I'm really liking the plants with the dark stems and foliage. I must add some of those plants to my own garden. Thanks for the tip about keeping Rudbeckias watered. I'd heard about this for Rhododendrons and Azaleas but didn't know about the Rudbeckias. Ben's tree is looking good and it's really grown. I remember you getting it. I've had a really busy week in my garden as the weather has been so nice. Hope you both have a lovely weekend and are able to do some gardening. The forecast isn't good but let's hope it's wrong. Take care. xxx
@MadAboutGardening6 күн бұрын
Thanks Wendy. The dark stems and foliage are lovely and make a good contrast to all the green. With the Sedums that purple foliage is striking even before the flowers come out. We had to keep on top of the watering with the rudbeckia after planting because they were put in as large plants and the soil is quite free draining. The tree has grown so much and its only when I looked at an old photo that I realised just how much as I'm used to seeing it everyday. We've been blessed with the nice weather this week and have enjoyed the warmer evenings after work. Have a lovely weekend too xxxx

Guys, I know it’s the wrong time of year to ask but did you do a Chelsea Chop on any of your perennials earlier this year? I have done in previous years but this year I just didn’t get round to it and things like my echinaceas, sedums, rudbeckias and asters have got a bit untidy and needed staking.
@MadAboutGardening8 күн бұрын
We don't usually do the Chelsea chop as we like our plants tall despite having to use stakes. Funily enough though, we struggled with our Aster Little Carlow which was getting eaten but when we moved it to a pot and it re-grew, it was like having the Chelsea chop! It's much smaller and is usually in flower now but an added bonus is that it doesn't need staking 👍

I'm going to save seeds and was going to offer some to you both for free but never know if they've been cross pollinated 🤔 Offer is there if you want, no issue if you don't 👍 Grasses are looking wonderful too, tried to get my father to like them but he said he will only ever have a lawn 😒 My Stipa Tenn is seeding everywhere 👀 The Miscanthus sinensis 'Kleine Silberspinne' I bought last month or so is turning into feathery plumes and looking gorgeous, I bought another 2 😎 1 was half price, might divide it and put it in the memorial garden at work. Hi guys. I took some verbena cuttings, plus some heuchera cuttings yesterday to give to my sister. Is it necessary to put the ziplock bag over them? She said she was going to just leave them on her decking outside and then to her polytunnel when the weather gets colder. Would that be ok? (based in south east Ireland) Thanks.
@MadAboutGardening11 күн бұрын
Hi there, if the cuttings aren't covered they can very easily lose too much moisture and dry out. If your sister doesn't want to cover with a clear bag, they will need misting regularly. It's much easier to cover and then check every few weeks. Hope this helps.

Yes, autumn is a good time to take semi ripe cuttings of perennials and shrubs. These cuttings are slightly more firm at the base but soft at the tip. You can also take hardwood cuttings of shrub roses, please see kzbin.info/www/bejne/r4qypKdsp9Wga5osi=95AnlEDpSE2tWrbY You can also divide perennials that have finished flowering at this time of year too. The orange flowering plant is tropical milkweed, it’s native to Central America as well as that monarch butterfly I saw in the video. I live in Ventura, California and we have both growing wild here. I’m not sure how they got there and I think some of those succulents would do just fine without watering there based on the fact that Aeonium is from there.

Hello, the natural habit of this grass is a bit floppy but it sounds like yours may be in need of dividing rather than just cutting back. We've got a few that have so many flowers they a matted and floppy because they are so heavy and we'll be dividing them this autumn. If you're unsure how to divide them, take a look at our video on how to do this - kzbin.info/www/bejne/gn7Od4iXhrZ7grc Hope this helps 👍

This was a great video. Thank you! As a relatively new gardener who usually just buys plants at the nursery, I have two questions about the process of cultivating by cuttings. What do I do with the cuttings once they are put in the soil and in the water ? Where do we put them - inside or outside? At what point do I plant the in the garden? Many thanks.
@MadAboutGardening13 күн бұрын
Thanks so much! The cuttings will root quicker in a warm place out of direct sunlight. On a windowsill inside or in a greenhouse is ideal. When they have rooted, pot them up into their own pots and when they have filled that container, they can be planted out. Hope this helps. Good luck with your cuttings 👍

Awful day here today as it's blowing a gale and very showery. Take care. xxx

@@MadAboutGardening Thank you. I made a few mistakes but I'll rectify them next year, 1) was having too many Verbena plants, 2) I didn't expect my plants growing much bigger that what they stated 3) I shouldn't of put grit in my compost for the wall baskets, drying out too fast. I might just fill them with strawberries next year 👍 All learning curves, trial and error. I've saved the seeds from 3 Echinops ritro VB heads, might be allowed to put some in at work, or scatter the seeds and say nowt 😎 I want white Liatris Spicata corms too! Might be an idea for the Salvia cuttings to go inside but the main plant should be fine for now, just make sure it doesn't get a soggy bottom over winter, is how I lost a couple.
