I'm from Texas and I remember one of the main greeting I got my first few weeks in Brazil was "E aí! Tá animada?" E eu fiquei pensando... animada sobre o que? É verdade que os brasileiros estão sempre animados.

Virgínia's channel is great, I strongly recommend it, I'm Brazilian, her accent is excellent, is very neutral, she speaks with a normal and natural Brazilian Portuguese, I speak in the same pace, but not so clear as her, I'm a little bit lazy...

Olly it’s funny you mentioned the only Portuguese book you found in London was a European Portuguese grammar book when the only one I found a few weeks ago was yours! Really nicely done and I’m happy I’ve found your channel. I’ve also been learning Brazilian Portuguese with Virginia’s channel which is excellent 👍🏻

Enjoyed the presentation. I am studing Portugues by myself at home with limited oportunity to speak Portugues but I use Virginia's material and attend all her videos as well as many of the other very good videos on line as well as listening to the CNN news and programs en Brasilian Portugues. Excelent material and very good ideas from both of you. I am on my sixth-month on this task and I think I am on the right track to become fluent in one year or less as my other instructors promise. Thanks for the video. Obrigado,

I completely agree with Virginia. I’m one of her students and in the beginning I was paranoid about saying everything correctly. I felt I NEEDED to understand the grammar. When I gave that up and really started to just speak and not worry about it I saw a huge jump in my confidence and ability. Now I’m learning more grammar and figuring out some of my errors. Then I practice those specifics. It has been great learning from Virginia and I’m so thankful for all the content that is available.

Great video. At one point Portuguese was my strongest language and I could converse freely and I understood a lot. But it was the one language where I NEVER focused on grammar and simple learned vocabulary and spoke as much as I could. Constant exposure and I just spent time enjoying the language. I’m sure I never spoke perfectly but I always received positive feedback when speaking with natives and made some great friends this way. Hope you’re well Olly, I’m really liking the videos 👍🏻 (Steve from London)

Great video, Olly and Virginia. I've learned so much more Brazilian Portuguese from Virginia's KZbin channel than from any other resource, and I'm excited to have found this (Olly's) channel just yesterday. You both are outstanding teachers. One thing struck me more than anything else--that you both say students struggle more with reading than with listening and speaking. Maybe it's just the way my brain works, but I find it much easier to learn to read non-native languages (English is my first language) than to read, and especially to speak, them. I found an app that has a half-dozen or so stories from classical literature, most, as I recall, originally written in different languages and translated into Portuguese--for example, Gulliver's Travels. What I found especially interesting (and this relates to your discussion of reading vs. speaking, writing vs. speaking, and formal written language vs. informal spoken language) is the almost archaic language in these older stories. Unlikely of much use to those who want to communicate with their contemporaries, but great for anyone who is interested in linguistics and literature. Getting back to the relevant point, your conversation got to some of the really interesting subtleties of learning a language, but most important for the majority of your students, I'm sure, are the differences between formal and informal speech and between textbook grammar and how people actually use the language. I, for one, have learned to be much more flexible about English grammar from the way I understand (and have experienced with Brazilian friends) that Brazilians can be all over the place.

I've been learning Finnish for six years now. My reading comprehension is pretty good, but I don't feel like I can say I'm fluent yet because my listening comprehension is not as good. I saw a comment on a post in a FB group a while ago that said "When you learn Finnish you're basically learning four languages; the book language, the spoken, slang, and dialect" (although you don't have to focus as much on dialect). I used English both times I've been to Finland because I wasn't confident in my Finnish, but I'm going to try and improve my listening comprehension before I visit again because I really do want to be fluent and converse with people.

The "formal" portuguese spoken in Brazil is way more related to your manners concerning the language than to the grammar rules themselves. You can be formal without sounding "antique" or "inadequate". Knowing how to use this "brazilian fluidity" is key for a person to sound natural as foreign speaker. A very formal language is reserved to excepcional occasions, such as talking to a judge, to an important politician etc. Xo from Brazil!! (:

I want to thank the author of the channel for making this beautiful and useful video for us! Many people are embarrassed to speak a foreign language if they have no speaking skills. People are afraid to hear criticism from others in their address. It all comes from having a psychological complex - to make a mistake. But, after all, he who does nothing is not wrong! In Yuriy Ivantsiv's workshop "Polyglot Notes. Practical tips for learning foreign language" states that we need to talk as much as possible: with yourself, with the mirror, with inanimate objects, with children and with pets. Find an interlocutor in real life or online. Talk without shyness. People won't care how you speak. They understand that you are a foreigner, as long as they understand you. They may even acknowledge your progress in their language and compliment you. However, always be prepared for criticism of your speaking skills. If you have the will to speak, you will gain an interesting interlocutor to consolidate your knowledge. Everyone is strewn with mistakes - don't be afraid to learn from them. As the Latin wisdom says, "walk and thou shalt not go astray". In the book "Polyglot Notes" by Yuriy Ivantsiv an entire chapter is devoted to the development of spoken language. Here you will find many useful tips and each student can choose a technique that suits him or her best! I wish you all the best of luck in your language learning!

im a 14 y/o native portuguese, as in, from Portugal, and i never really noticed how different brazillian portuguese can be from the european one for foreign learners. i'd say brazillians are way more slacked off and relaxed but still accentuating the syllables waayyy more. you really have to feel their vibe to blend in properly when i try to speak brazillian portuguese i feel like it's just speaking how i usually do but in a wrong way? 😭 except it's not-
