Also don't forget that we might not have even sent a message to any aliens yet, unlike a device on earth such as a cell phone, these transmissions are directional/line of sight, imagine you live on some very distant planet and don't even know earth exists, well sending a message to earth would be like trying to randomly shine a laser pointer around in space until it just so happens to pass by our planet, meaning if you're off by something tiny, then the message could pass right by us and on top of that our planet is constantly revolving around the sun, so even if we did get a reply it's entirely possible that we could be on the other side of the sun and it blocks the message.

This is my favorite Midfield episode. There was a lot of talk about interacting with other life forms and the universe as a whole, but the main takeaway for me was the interactions between humans. In all its beauty and complexity is what I hope our relationship with any other beings can and will be.
@ethandile76682 жыл бұрын
Well I can tell you from experience that's not gonna happen , humans are not an inviting species or very open minded . Everytime I take the time to try to understand these humans they prove to me how humans are naturally Bashful backward Bigots , there's nothing complex to you no offense but you dont even have a redundant nervous system ,your a monkey that decided it was the center of the universe on our planet . First contact happened a long time ago we live amoung you that's been said and done for 100s of years , you want our relationships to be beautiful( which primitive racist @$$ thought btw , just bc you aren't capable of of it doesn't mean we aren't ) then maybe humans should have a care . Maybe they should treat each others as equals bc you have no idea how many of us you talk to every day and you have no idea how many you treat like garbage . My father came to this world To hunt And eat humans bc they seem to enjoy fear and conflict and hatred ,they were seen as backward primates , and humans still to this day haven't changed . There's nothing beautiful about your race , your the most backward volient repulsive monkeys I have ever met , every aspect of your society is flawed in every way , there nothing complex to it your apes who still think this is your planet . Your monkeys who solve problems by creating more problems , you prefer your poverty and sickness and mud over the stars . To tell you the truth you meet us everyday , and everyday you refuse to be better , you want contact , you want a relationship with other species then try . All I see is that you refuse to accept us bc you won't even accept each other so no what you want to happen won't bc no human has put in effect diplomatically since Jesus and even he wasn't a human .. and humans still think there alone for some reason IDk why maybe it's a Coping thing maybe it's bc You think everything revolves around you , your race is very young and You inflict constant self harm on each other for no other benefit then to suffer together .Idk why honestly, humans are very stupid , like 4 instance you consider an IQ of 250 to be Intelligent? Like this isn't even your original Planet but you treat it like it's yours . Your the most dismissive barley sentient , barley space faring Species in existence, only good 4 Hunting , only good 4 fear ...

This is by far my favorite episode. A few thoughts: Though sending messages into space in the hopes of reaching extraterrestrials and starting further communication may be secondary to the thought experiment about what it is that we would like to communicate about ourselves and how we would communicate and although humanity has emitted signals into space since well before we were aware of what we were doing, it’s true that in human history, civilizations, people groups, and empires that have encountered an “other” who lacks equivalent technological advancements have treated those without the same level of advancement horrifically a majority of the time and en masse. Unfortunately, that does not speak well of humanity, at least yet. We are still writing our own story and we cannot change the past, but we can show our capacity for reform and change the narrative. I also want to acknowledge that though the experiment run with Steve Vance from JPL and the experts in various fields was interesting and is probably about the best means of experiment we could realistically run at this time, I am not convinced that people or other beings encountering a message that is randomized would not attempt to read some meaning into it OR that a message that humans send to space would not be misinterpreted or have meanings added to it if another group of beings were to run across it. I don’t know that this is not dangerous but given that we have already sent out messages for a reasonable amount of time and given the scale of the universe and how relatively short of a distance those messages have gone as compared to the size of the observable universe, unless we horribly misunderstand the limitations of transportation speed through space (this is not impossible), it would still take any other being living near another star in inordinately long amount of time to travel here given that they are able to reach the greatest known speed possible to travel through space. This episode raised a ton of questions about what it means to be human and alive on this planet, in our tiny corner of the universe. I hope that thinking about these things and just how small we are in the scheme of things helps us to put our petty qualms with each other aside and to think with humanity’s legacy and our story and how we would like it to be in mind.
@sambishir8813 Жыл бұрын
only one "thing" I have to comment on. when you said "I don't know that this is not dangerous" you are letting bias come into play. You don't know what is unkown but your sub consios forms an opion on it. If you don't know what is uknown then why are you saying that the universe might not be dauengerus. Sure, there is a chance. but how do we really know that. Chance is only posible becuase of math and math i flawed. not everything has a mathmatical explistnation. so there fore chance might be wrong. So is the universe dangureos?

Wow! Michael! A few years ago, I wrote a novel about the last few living humans, slowly dying on Mars. When the last human on Earth died, they decided to eulogize the species by broadcasting their stories into space. Because those radio waves will travel across the universe essentially forever. The point wasn't that someone was listening, but that this was the closest they could get to forever--a grave marker in a churchyard nobody will ever visit. What a beautiful thing you did to honor your grandmother.

@@RaawHax Yeah definitely, I think I would have gone quite a different route in general when it comes to this experiment and I'm not just talking about the actual message decipher. Hello, fellow aspiring programmer here. I'm currently learning programming and Game dev (this is my second year). I think I did pretty well considering the fact that I was basically playing along alone and was basically piecing together everything just as the video progressed. First off, my brain picked up on the binary thing pretty much immediately because of my background as a Computer Science student ( I caught it even before the experts in the room which I'm proud of lol). After that, first thing I wanted to do when I figured that out was to arrange and transcribe the message just like the people in the room. The bit that caught me out specifically was where they divided the number to find its prime factors was something I didn't think of doing. I guess it's just because I've never been paticularly good at math ( Wait! A programmer who isn't also a human calculator? It's a shocker, I know). I did however instantly recognize the pattern or lack thereof as randomly generated noise which... would have thrown me for a loop if I was actually in the experiment with the other experts. If I were in the actual experiment, at this point I would have figured out that this message wasn't actually alien in nature. Why? because I don't like to make a lot of assumptions and this whole thing would have DEFINITELY seemed fishy to me. Let me explain. First off, Michael started the experiment by saying that this particular message was something that was confirmed to be unique and well... Noise is not unique, we recieve random background noise from the Universe all the time. That doesn't make sense. Either we had deciphered the message completely wrong or Michael was lying which wouldn't have made much sense. What also doesn't make sense is the circumstances surrounding this message. Think about it, if this really WERE an actual alien message then why exactly was I and this random ragtag group of experts with no government affiliation being allowed to view this without undergoing some sort of severe non disclosure agreement. Think about it, this is supposedly the first alien contact in human history. This is some extremely serious stuff we're talking about here. The sort of stuff that a lot of higher powers would have an interest in. That would be a pretty major red flag for me personally. Secondly, notice how there wasn't any expert in the room who specialised in deciphering and encoding which would have immediately sent up red flag number two (seriously, they invited a college professor and not someone who has the literal expertise required for this sort of thing). The first message we recieve from outer space and its deciphering is handed to a bunch of people who (while experts at their field) are certainly not the first people that any important organisation would likely go for? Yeah, I wouldn't buy that one bit. The moment the final noise message would have shown up I would have called Michael out on this and declared a fraud.

This was really interesting to watch, and pretty sweet too. I think it proves a certain odd concept to explain, the fact that we aren't fully rational beings, and we are instead made out of rational and irrational parts. Here we have a video about science and scientists in general and about space, people who are really smart and have a high amount of knowledge, we have Michael who throughout the entire video discusses these sciences, tries to find something in common with alien life, explains how scientists send messages about 'truths' to aliens, things like what we are and what we are made out of, our physical appearances, numbers, math, all of these very rational things. But then at the end, when Michael has the chance to send a message out there into the universe, while other scientists would probably send more information about us and our cultures and what we are, Michael decided to send an image of himself and his grandmother, because she was a very important person in his life, and still is, considering the fact that she helped him be who he is now. I think this is something that probably only us can experience, our irrational side, Michael is a very smart person and when faced with the opportunity to send a message out there, he did something out of love for an important person in his life. I'm unsure if alien life would be able to understand this concept, but I hope they do. Perhaps your picture will teach them about love, and perhaps your grandmother will not only have created ripples around your life, but around alien life, and the universe too.
