If I could live forever, should I? How does being reminded of our own mortality affect us psychologically? In this episode I speak with mortician and death positivity activist Caitlin Doughty and visit a cryonics facility trying to extend human life indefinitely. Will I take them up on their offer, or will I choose to die?

"Or should you?!" Hmm.... Consciousness is like a running computer "program/code", it runs while the human body is powered on with blood flowing, but once the heart stops so does the brain and thus the "program/code". The body is nothing but a "tin can" a "vehicle" or a "laptop" if you will. Once the brain dies the body is nothing but an empty shell... just burn it, bury it, there's really nothing sexy about it. lmao

@@rnomromro6715 The question of what happens after death is a deeply philosophical and existential one, and it has been a topic of debate for centuries among theologians, philosophers, and scientists. However, it's important to note that the question of what happens after death remains a matter of belief and speculation because there is no conclusive scientific evidence or empirical proof that definitively answers this question. The nature of consciousness, the existence of an afterlife, or what might happen after death are still open questions without universally accepted answers. In summary,you have expressed a specific viewpoint on death, it's important to recognize that the nature of death and what, if anything, comes after it is still a topic of philosophical debate and remains open to interpretation. It's not a settled fact but rather a matter of personal belief and perspective.

I'm curious about the language used by the actor to introduce the questionnaire to the control group. To me, "this is just about your gut-level reactions" could have prompted the control group to answer faster than the study group, which in turn could've affected the interpretation that the study group members were more thoughtful. Basically, it seems that the control group was encouraged to answer quickly.

Where would you be in time? Will you know the cancellation of existence??? How can you? Why is this even a thing everyone experience?? We’ve been around advancing in knowledge for centuries, yet still can’t dig into the unknown realm of death. A bit late on this video, and this comment. When I think about death I relate it to my (at the time) life long best friend that passed abruptly when we were 18. I remember how absolutely gutted I was, how unfair it felt etc etc. Now many years later, I can't help but think about how full those 18 years were. When I compare it to my own life, even with all these extra years I've lived passed him my life still feels less full than he had with much less time. It's hard to always keep perspective on this, but living hundreds of years of working a job that doesn't fulfill you will never be as meaningful as living 18 full of love and adventures, and I think without death lurking around the corner for us all, we'd never care enough to give that love or spend the time needed to make life worth it. I hope you find your transcendent purpose so you don't feel the need to ever press that button.
@theeyeofomnipotent
@theeyeofomnipotent 21 күн бұрын
Hmm, Though i want both, to be fulfilled and live long and more, The unfulfilling life is the result of a system that demands efficiency and exploitation over sentient decency. An emphatiless system..., so if one wants to work, try to work on a more human centric company or people hehehe This reality has a lot more to offer, I don't think about death nor does it motivate me to do meaningful stuff. Those things are meaningful by themself. We are the ones that gives meaning to the meaningless. I want to experience an era where we can save the sun, and put a tracker on consciousness... an era of rejuvinators, so we can even save even those who have died, and of ressurectors The mark of a non-ideal civilization is deaths and suffering, so the mark of an advanced civilization would be the reverse of that, Even if we can't act. We are the witnessers, and I wanna witness more Let's see if a pure consciousness can insert itself into this universe, a unientity. I hope you all have a fulfilling life and more

I've been dealing with death a lot as a 22 year old. Nobody has died around me but just the realization that I'm going to be in a moment like this one looking through my eyes and thinking internally and it's gonna be the moment when I take my last breath and everything will fade away I assume. I don't know how to even think about what it will look like after that. After it all goes black or after I fall asleep or whatever it feels like in that moment. It's terrifying. That moment haunts me and it's never even happened yet. Everything I've ever known and experienced will just not be anymore. No more internal dialogue, no more dreams, no more love or anger, or pain or happiness. My atoms will fall apart and turn into nothing again. How am I supposed to even deal with that? It's an endless cycle that I can't come to terms with. I also disagree with that lady when she said that death brings life meaning. I'm haunted by that moment, yes, but it's not why I'm thinking right now. It's not why I'm getting up and feeding myself right now. It's not why I'm wanting to feel sunlight right now. It's the utter absence of all of those things. how am I not supposed to be upset that I won't get to experience those things anymore?

Exactly. The thing that has helped me the most to cope with these same thoughts is the sentiment she kinda touched on with "Living as long as i can till technology saves me" because i doubt ill live long enough to see technology reach that point even if im cryo frozen. What i take from that statement tho is something that ive already told myself many times and its the thought that even tho that moment will come, im going to keep going out of spite. To say fuck you, ill last as long as i want to and im going to keep running every time the reaper is close because i know eventually itll catch me. But that doesn't mean i have to let it win till it has to. While this thinking doesn't help everyone it has certainly helped me. Especially with making decisions in my life and teaching me what i really want from this existence. Each moment im not true to what i really want from this life is a moment wasted. And i wont let the reaper win by lettin me waste more time stressing about its inevitable arrival.

seeing people say this gave them comfort just confuses me, only because I’m so terrified of the idea of death. Recently it’s come to my mind a lot, i often find myself having a laugh or a good time only to remember this sad fact. Is it bad that i want to stay? is it bad that i don’t want to go indefinitely? I wish this wasn’t a truth of life or something to accept as i feel i can’t accept it. i’ve heard different perspectives and have talked to many people who i feel are wise enough, but that doesn’t change the fact that one day i will dissipate from what i once was. i tried not crying multiple times this video over it as it’s just been such a tough topic for me. regardless i just hope everyone here finds the comfort i haven’t and i hope i can find as well (sorry i just had to vent somewhere).

@rynvail521 Жыл бұрын
I think one thing people find comforting about the video is that this is something every person grapples with. You aren't alone in your anxieties. It can be scary, and that's okay. There a couple of things I would suggest that might help you, because they've helped me, but if they don't that's okay as well. Remember that even if someone else's ideas don't work for you, that doesn't mean they don't understand. You aren't alone. The first thing I would recommend, particularly for the moments where anxiety is particularly strong, is to ground yourself in the moment. Take a deep breath and feel that you are alive right now. You can see and feel the world around you. Your mind might keep straying to detrimental anxieties about death but try to just focus on the physicality of where you are right now. Maybe look into mindfulness techniques. This doesn't mean pushing your fear down or ignoring that death is an option, just regrounding yourself in reality when your mind starts to spiral. Second, reframing things might be useful. Death doesn't mean your existence never was. Your convinces is an emergent pattern born from the way the universe is currently ordered. You aren't the same person you were ten years ago, and you aren't the person who will be here ten years from now. Your atoms come from the universe and you are made up of the same matter as everything else. When you die, you will change. But that doesn't mean you stop existing. You will be part of this universe, your impact on places and people will shape what comes, and new things will take form. You've been stardust before and you'll be stardust again. And we'll be stardust together. Even if you won't quite be you, you won't be alone.

Even if you cryo-preserve yourself and wake up in like 80 years or so, the horrifying truth is that you will be entering a whole another world where you will have close to zero role, your friends won't be there and neither will your family. I’ve got to be honest, the theory is honestly completely opposite of what my personal experience has been. I used to be very judgmental and harsh on a certain group of people who I have extremely different opinions with, and I used to want all sorts of bad things to happen to them. Not death or torture, but being ostracized, treated differently, instilled with fear and terror, etc. Once I had my own months-long death scare (extremely health anxiety and frequent panic attacks, nothing’s actually wrong with me thankfully) I began to have a change in attitude, wishing to treat them equally and not wanting anything bad to happen to anyone. Because as Megatron said when he disbanded the Decepticons, “I now know the true meaning of oppression, and have thus lost my taste for inflicting it”.

I feel like different experimental scenarios would be useful for this. If I were in the experimental group, I think the main thing that would have given me pause would have been specifically that the punishments consisted of jail sentences - time taken away from someone. the more aware of morality you are, I think anyway, the more cognitive dissonance it's going to cause to say "ten years of this person's life should be spent in jail." It's taking away a limited and precious resource.

I've always hated the platitude that the only thing giving things meaning is that it ends, including life. It's not a perspective I'm able to process as it seems like a complete non-sequester fabricated by people in denial about what death and non-existence are, and seeking to make it more romantic. Things have value because it incites a feeling of some kind (in yourself or others,) be it sating curiosity, deriving fulfillment, or simply experiencing non-descript joy. To me that has nothing to do with time or timing. I do things because I want and can experience them, not because I might not tomorrow. Yes, you could do that thing in two-hundred years, but why would you? It's interesting and fun now.. That's all you should need as motivator. Should things no longer incite those feelings, and become a dull monotone, then sure, that's the point where living no longer makes sense. But I could live a thousand lifetimes and always have something (new) to learn or do on this planet alone, let alone the galaxy, let alone the universe. I don't foresee ever wanting to die out of a sense of being 'done,' it's simply a horrific inconvenience I have to make my peace with.

One of the reasons I have come to accept my own mortality, is that even if life could be prolonged, it hardly makes sense to be done indefinitely. Aging is hard, and as time passes, it's not just a fight against aging but a fight against time and entropy itself. Immortality doesn't make sense without eternal youth. So, I guess that's right, someday I will have to return the atoms in my body to Earth and the universe.

In overall I liked the idea and I think it is overall good value. Groups unfortunately weren't comparable at all. If you want to work with samples at this size. You need to match as many aspects between groups as possible: age, gender, race, political views. Also I think the questions should have been more clearer and detailed.

In death, at least, it'll be like returning to nothing. You don't know what returning to nothing is like, but you at least know that it won't be sad nor happy. It'll be nothing. Of course, assuming that you do not believe in an after life.

The ability to be alive forever would give me the chance to really understand and feel everything about stuff in insane depth. I dont think death makes things worth in the first place. Most people I know dont think anything is worth anyways. What I mean is there would still be no reason to do stuff=no difference. You would still have fealings that are subjective and still ignore death and still have goals or no goal. Death not existing wouldnt have that effect they just trying to find reasons so they can accept death because they fear it so much but in the end they still wants to live forever.

24:03 Michael: "when it comes to extending life some questions come up like, should people die? I know we don't like the idea of death, but, (over talk ensues) do we lose something?" Max More, Alcor's CEO: "I know what you're getting at . . . Yea, I think we will lose something like we lost something when we got rid of slavery or, or smallpox." I single out this exchange as the logic behind the idea that the 'something' that 'was lost as a result of the end of slavery or smallpox' was notable enough, and arguably exceptional in value compared with what was gained from either historic milestone, enough that not only did this 'head of industry' deem those incidences comparable examples to the "detriments" of human mortality, but that Michael as much as sympathized with the sentiment. So, confused as I remain regarding that specific topic, I, at minimum, hope that someone with more insight on the subject may grace me with some, or any, further explanation what 'losses,' besides those gains which clearly motivated the 'industry'/'practice' throughout history and across many cultures/nationalities, am I overlooking?
