How to talk to birds | Astacianna Hatcher | TEDxBrighton

Stacey Astacianna Hatcher is a dedicated conservation biologist. She travels to remote corners of the globe to investigate the health of ecosystems and measure their unique biodiversity. She does this primarily by monitoring local bird populations by ear. Stacey Astacianna listens to the songs and chirps around her, then notes what species she hears. Generally she is immersed in dense tropical forests for weeks at time, fine-tuning her ear across thousands of hectares day after day. This information is passed on to other scientists to help develop conservation and ecosystem restoration plans. She states that the simple act of standing still and listening allows her connect with the world and new dimensions are revealed.

I loved this video. I found it when looking for literally 'How to talk to Birds'. To all the people who could only focus on the way she spoke, may be listening to birds so much has altered the way she speaks. May be its nervousness being on stage. Then again, I'm from India. We don't get bothered by stuff like this. I am sad to see focus being driven away from this amazing woman's skill and the basic lesson around listening she left us with. Her process was very simple and something any of us can try. Encouraging everyone to focus on the content. She's pretty darn cool actually.

I play guitar and sing with the birds. They all gather around on various telephone lines and we sing! Or If I go to the park a bunch of other birds gather. I get inspired by the notes and rhythms they make too. Didn't Mozart learn melodies from the birds?

I like to whistle with the birds in my backyard. We sing together and make beats. Most of the time I use it as a form of meditation. Definitely one of my favorite activities. You are the only other person I have heard of that has done this too, although I’m sure they are out there.

Stacey Astacianna Hatcher How can you not tell that she is being very loud? Shouting for sure. You can tell because as soon as she opens her mouth the background noises completely disappear. Meaning they have her microphone turned way down. You can also hear the force of her breath. With the high pitched voice, I would also say she is screaming in the microphone. In case you are from somewhere else maybe you don’t know that “screaming into something” doesn’t mean actual screaming like in a horror scene.
