That's exactly what I'm doing, sticking my hand in the enclosure and keeping it there without touching him. He's still a baby of 8 weeks old (named him Oscar), but the younger you can make them to trust you, the better. Next move will be to put a worm on the end of my fingers and try to lure him closer to my hand, by his own choice. Small steps at a time and lots of patience is the key here. ^^ Note that he isn't aggressive (his brother on the the other hand had a completely different character, oh boy, not a very happy boy), but it's better to avoid future problems, right? :)

My 2 month old (as of today) female is doing well. I watched these videos and it really helped! I saw a bunch of things I was doing wrong and I feel quite bad but I'm trying to rebuild my trust with her. Today I was holding a cricket near her and she started making this squeaking noise (she makes this noise like a high pitched squeak and I finally realize that it's probably her juvenile way of hissing) but she was doing it about 10 times in and she even was moving around really fast. I backed down a step and now have been placing my hand in the cage for a minute and carefully putting my finger under her front until she climbs on. I'm only holding her for about two minutes at a time.

Your video is awesome and I have shared it on a reddit sub about chameleons. People are constantly asking why they're animals are so mad, how to handle them, how to get them to calm down and you pretty much nailed it. I just got a new cham a little over a week ago, and he has been super skittish, it's true, you just need to go slow with them. A bit of a week later and I have a whole new cham now. I just took it slow with him, handled him a bit several times a day (he needed it), and we're pals now.

I have never grabbed her from above and she was okay with me when i first bought her. no hissing when getting her out of the pet store cage, no hissing or anything when i picked her up to put her in her new home for the first time. but as soon as she grew a little bit she hates me. :(

Riley Marsh they change colors depending on their mood and when they are angry, they turn darker.
@furfeathersscalesnmore61497 жыл бұрын
Best to just stop handling if they start getting dark. You're just undoing everything you're trying to do. Let them get used to being near you. Slow man, if he gets stressed with the door being open just stand by the cage for a few minutes. Don't let them get to the poikt where they are black EVER. And if they are black even when you look at them they'll probably never tame down. Chameleons are for looking at and MAYBE once or twice a week come out. But you got a display animal if it is uncomfortable never force
@tobycoetserr5 жыл бұрын
Woah woah!! Only female chameleons turn completely black the males can only turn darker shades of green or whatever their colour is. Please make sure he is on hundred percent a male or you may have a problem. Females don't tend to do so well. Please be careful hope I helped

Does your chameleon eventually crawl onto your hand and come out of his cage in time? or do you have to physically try and take him out? Cause im trying to figure out how to get my chameleon out of his cage for the first time and I dont really know how to do it without causing him to get angry or scared. The place where I got him from said that he used to come out and crawl onto their shoulders while they cleaned his cage, so im thinking he should be able to soon?

I just got a veiled about a month ago. I’ve been home a lot of the time and have been treating him like a baby. I have yet to take him out of his cage because he will usually hiss if my hand gets close to him(even slowly from underneath). I feed him with bowl and finally got to hand feed with wax worms. I am very cautious not to traumatize him but want to at least have my first experience holding him. You think I Shud just go for it gently? Or shud I just continue to hand feed for a while? And if so how long

I know she probably felt really sad when I left, the first day I had gotten her from the store I was taking her out of the pet store box and she was completely cool with it, she watched the cars and then she began adventuring (she was my first lizard and I kinda didn't do any research on her, which was bad, but when I finally decided that she was the one, I got everything and I set up the enclosure the day I got her, she started out in a 10 gallon, and then was moved to a 15 gallon a month later, she was really small and sick looking but I still loved her. She used to take naps with me and she would make weird purring sounds the were a bit weird but she did it, I got her checked and they said it was just a bond that should never be broken. So I was a bit upset when I left and now I am working on getting a different advanced type of reptile, I have no idea what I should get though... so could I get some pointers on what I should do?

+Cheyenne Arthur Make sure you do your research before you get something - especially if you want an "advanced" reptile. 15 Gallons is WAY off for anything but the smallest of chameleon species - which I really doubt you had because you aren't going to find those at a pet store. Furthermore, saying 15 gallons, makes it sound like you got a glass tank, which is also inappropriate and has been linked to greatly reduced lifespans in many chameleons. You must research the animal because only then will you find out if you are able to properly care for them. They can end up being very time consuming and costing hundreds of dollars - if not more if you run into health issues. It's not heartbreaking to give them away - watching them dying from parasitic worms that are infesting their whole body because you didn't clean up their poop fast enough and they ingested some and you're unprepared financially to take them to a vet - that's crushing. I'd rethink your desire for an advanced reptile - there are plenty out there that are easy to care for but still extremely cool. I'm not meaning to sound overly critical - but I am currently caring for 8 rescued reptiles from people that did not research before hand but loved the "cool" factor of their pet, including one chameleon that was on it's death bed when I took it in. It had been kept in a 15 gallon tank. Hadn't eaten in 3 weeks, avoided heat and UVB, and was shooting it's tongue at the dirt in it's cage. Once I put it in a proper enclosure, he recovered within a few days. I've had that chameleon for three years now.

i just got my chameleon today. is there any good tips on how to get him to trust me? he’s just a little dark, when i’m not staring at him. i’ve put my hand in front of him, and he almost got on it but then left. i’ve tried to get tweezers and feed him crickets, but he won’t take it. not sure if he’s been eating the crickets hopping around the cage.

I wouldn't begin even trying to handle him at all for the first week or two. Let him settle in and get familiar with his surrounding.

Can you feed them dead crickets dusted with calcium, or do they have to be alive

Hi Mike, could I convert a cupboard into a chameleon cage if I had three wood walls and one screen at the front? Would it be enough ventilation? I would have the lights fitted above as I have another small cupboard perfect size?
@MikeTytula9 жыл бұрын
Harrys got geckos Maybe I would drill a whole or two on one of the sides for extra ventilation but if done properly it should be fine

Kind of a leap (ha, no pun intended) does this apply to small dart frogs too or are they all about visuals and feeding time?
@MikeTytula7 жыл бұрын
You should never hold dart frogs, or ideally any frog for that matter

I'm getting a chameleon in the next 2-3 days from the pet store. On the cage it says to avoid holding. This will be my first chameleon. How do I change that?

Yeah great advice! My gecko comes out of his hide whenever I have my food bag.

I have a veiled chameleon it's an adolescent. At first he loved to be held and would reach for me when I came to his cage. I just upgraded his enclosure and he's taken a disliking to me now. No color change he just opens his mouth. Is that pretty normal when changing a habitat?

+MUALeiahRene Ya especially if you just moved him and are trying to get him out

I’ve had my veiled chameleon for 2 years now. He used to hiss and charge at me but now he lets me around his cage and doesn’t mind when I’m in the room but he still gets PISSED if I even try to touch him. He lets me hand feed and everything though. Hopefully he’ll come around. Any advice ?

Honeslty since this video I wouldn't really recommend handling chameleons, they truly are a more hands off type pet, like it's great if they are naturally tame and don't mind be held but still.

Hey I just got a veiled chameleon and I was wondering what's wrong with it because she turns black all day unless she's sleeping or eating but for the most part she's very dark and I have seen a lot of people's that are very colorful is there something wrong

there may be varying issues. i am fairly new to owning a chameleon, i have had mine for about a month now. but i did a lot of research. she could be over heated for an example, look up what does it mean when a chameleon is black or something along the lines and then fix what you may or may not be doing. hope this helps!

Try setting her in a warmer environment, like with you in the room ignoring her, so she learns to trust you a little bit. Mine used to stay pretty dark until I sat in a warmer room with him on his tree perch, talking to him occasionally but not bothering him, by the time a week went by, he's eating and even drinking from my hand and climbing out of his habitat right onto my hand.

@Mike Tytule Hi :) I'm going to get a Chameleon as a baby, are they going to be more tame than an a mature Chameleon?

Question, Hello! I recently got a 5-6 month old male veiled chameleon! My cage size is about 16 inch in width/length and about 18-20 inch height. The cage is somewhat like a tree but made out of driftwood/plastic plants. I have a type of humidity moss that helps with humidity at the bottom of cage. Now his basking spot is about 90 degrees and when he walks around the top of the tree its around 80-85 degrees. The bottom of the cage is pretty cold though, about 75 degrees. He usually just stays at the top if I put him near the bottom. I also love to play with him outside/hold him and everything! Any tips on what else I could do?

If my chameleon is angry like puffing out their neck and opening their mouth should I keep trying to pick them up?

I honestly would leave him alone if that is the case.

If money and space weren't an issue, I would have a Blue-tongued Skink, and a pretty Boa morph. I haven't owned very many reptiles yet, so I guess my dreams aren't too extravagant haha.
