It took me so long to make this video because there really is a lot to say and indeed it came out a very long video... sorry about that!
This is just my way and what I do with my birds, if you have different opinions feel free to share!
Taming a parrot is a long process and probably even more difficult than training particular tricks, that's why many people prefer to skip this by getting an hand reared cockatiel so that it's already tamed.
But a parent raised bird can be just as great without the risk of being unable to interact with its own species, which can happen if the bird wasn't hand reared properly.
What do you think of all this ladder thing? Where would you place yourself into it?
Let me know in the comments and see you soon!

Hey, I feel like adding something as many seem to have problems with the bird accepting scritches 😁 If they don't know that your finger approaching thier head means scritches they could be scared of it at first, also depending on their mood at the monent. Best moment to "teach" that is when they are chilled, for example when they are relaxing on your shoulder, there is always that moment of the day when they get tired and and you can see it because the head becomes more fluffy and the beak looks smaller because covered by the feathers. Usually it happens in the evening when the lights get lower. In that moment if you slowly try to give scritches using your fingertips and not your nails, they are more likely to accept it and will realize that it feels good. Also it's not like they wanna get scritched everytime you try to offer it, but after that they understand that pointing your finger to their head means that you can give scritches, they will either lower their head to get them or step back depending by their mood in that moment .

Thank you so so much. I got a parent raised cockatiel 5 days ago and she went from level 1 to level 3 already. She's so brave! I'm so proud of her. She doesn't hop on my hand if I don't have any food with me but we'll get there. She "talks" to me a lot and I respond the best I can by imitating her chirps and I'm in love. Thank you for your amazing tips ♥

Thank you for a very special video and for your hard work in making it. It'll help with treating her the way she should be treated: With respect and sensitivity. My tiel is on level like 0 haha But I just got him yesterday so it makes sense. Sometimes he chirps when I enter the room but idk why he also hasn't eaten or drank anything yet, at least that I have seen, but I was looking it up and many people have said that their tiels did neither when they first brought them home? he does grind his beak though, for whatever reason. Edit (3 months later, 2/23/20): My tiel (Piko!) is now level 3-5. He will eat millet from my hand and likes to sit on my shoulder. He will preen himself on me and I can even give him birdy kisses! He's not the happiest bird when I try to give him scritches, though. Edit 2 (9/3/2021 hehe for you Angie): 'Tiel is around level 5 with the exception of scritches, although some birds don't like them at all. I can sort of place my hand on his head and he won't really do anything (he used to bite), but I still can't move my fingers to scritch him. He plays with my jewelry and clothes n stuff when he's on my shoulder, and tries to steal whatever food I am eating while he's on me (even if the food is literally in my mouth already haha) and he is very chatty (sings pirates of the caribbean, cat calls, parts of saria's song, says his name A LOT, etc.). He will eat out of my hand and absolutely lovessss pumpkin seeds. If I put my face close to his he might give me a birdy kiss and make a clicking sound, but he still can't really do any tricks yet. I am trying to teach him to "shake" but it's slow progress... lol. He is sort of potty trained, though. If I take him off my shoulder & hold him over a trash can he knows to go potty before I will let him back on my shoulder. I luv him :)

@@rylanmoore678 Thanks for the help! He is now eating and drinking in front of me and he chirps a lot more. My mom insisted we bring the bird out of the cage so he knows it is safe, so unfortunately we already touched the bird heh. He's bitten both of us but it wasn't too bad and he rarely does it. We've only taken him out twice though and we set him on top of the cage and he just chirped and stuff. He also will sometimes preen in front of me, and doesn't even get that scared when the cat walks in the room. Making progress! :D

@@linesofsanzuThanks! The first couple weeks were quiet. A lot of just letting him do what he wanted in the cage and being in the same room. I got a little stuck as to how to start but it's really a matter of finding which training works for them, and he responded amazingly to target training. It was only a couple weeks after that when he became comfortable enough to step up on my hand. Actually, he took more to stepping onto a perch I was holding before he was comfortable with my hand. Now he prefers my hand, so it's safe to say he's fully hand trained at this point. There were a lot of videos that gave me so much unnecessary anxiety, but it's really just a matter of patience as well as respecting his boundaries☺️

So I would visit almost everyday for a month or so. Fast forward about a year or so later, It flew away as I was trusting myself and the Tiel to be out of the cage. I know this is an old video but I liked to share my experience with the cockatiel. So at first our cockatiel was an impulse buy me, my brother and my sister wanted a bird we like animals but are too lazy to take care of them properly. So we got a cockatiel from a pet store without knowing nothing about their nature or that they need big cages. We did buy the bird a big cage , but later our grandmother thought that the cage was too small. So she let him live in a room that we don't use it only has a fridge in it because of that he has a ton of space. Regretfully when we bought the cockatiel we only bought a single one. We still don't have that much spare money for another cockatiel so basically after the initial bird craze died off we started paying less atention to him and it never got used to us we never trained him because we didn't even know how to take care of him. So our grandmother took care of him most of the time. She put newspaper on the floor in his new living area that is not a cage, she took a few branches from the outdoors and place it in the living room so he has a few perches to play with and a wide room to walk in. She also gave him seeds as food , we didn't know about pellets at that time After a while I matured and noticed the error of my mistakes. So now I'm trying to do research and take care of him so far I've noticed that I'm at rank 2 with my cockatiel he eats from the bowl while I'm gently without any movement holding it to him. After talking to him for awhile I noticed that he sometimes notices me and comes to inspect me and my actions. He tried to bite me a couple of times when i tried to gain his trust by placing my hand in his cage. But i remained calm in those situations i've never even thought about punishing my bird. Right now I'm trying to get him to rank three where he eats food from my hand. I wanted to ask you? Do you think if I could build my trust with him. I also wanted to know if he hates me from the fact that when he notices me now he flies from his perch in order to observe. And i wanted to know how much time should you spend on gaining trust and training your cocktiel daily without tiring him out to much.

Currently level 5 although I don’t have a cage for her. She just showed up and I’ve been caring for her. It’s been about a week and a half now. She’ll sit and preen but not ok with petting her yet lol I plan to get a cage if no one claims her. She was very defensive but we have been very carefully working with her and she’s turning into the sweetest baby. I just call her Baby Birdie or Bebe (Spanish) and sweet talk her the way I do with my dogs. I don’t know if I should name her yet. I don’t know her age. She’s so cute when she calls for us. When she arrived, she* sat with us in the back yard and she wouldn’t leave. She must have been through a lot because she perched on my bfs shoulder and just went to sleep. We were out there for hours just in shock trying to figure out what to do. Full of attitude but so trusting . Completely in love.

My cockatiel, Izzy, is between 4 and 5. She will groom herself on us and play with our hair and clothes but won't accept scritches. She is taking to target training well. Her favorite treat is millet. I need to work with her to trust my hands. Currently she only trust my hands when she wants something: millet, out of cage or up from the floor.

All taming levels 1. The Cockatiel can handle your close presenve 2. The Cockatiel can eat from the feeder while it's in your hand 3. The Cockatiel will eat the food you offer from your hand 4. The Cockatiel will step on your hand, finger or sit on your shoulder 5. The Cockatiel will do grooming on you, play with you, accept scritches 6. You can pet the Cockatiel on the back, sometimes even grab 7. You can grab, touch even under the wings and do shaping Cool video, but doesn't touching the Cockatiels on the back/wings/tails makes them hormonal?

My bird was doing really well but he's started losing trust and I don't know why. It definitely has something to do with how my dad handles him. My dad pokes at his belly and stuff, saying it's a game even though my tiel clearly hates it, snaps at my dad's fingers all the time and now my dad gets frustrated when the bird bites him instead of stepping up. Despite losing trust, when he's in a good mood he is still 5. He was nearing 6 but he's fallen back due to how people treat him. I'm really trying and hope to get him to 7 some day. I've had him since the beginning of January, so four months now, he was already decently good when I met him, I found him on craigslist and went to meet him. He bit but they used a stick to step him up, got rid of that and he steps on my finger fine and has never bitten hard, just nips sometimes. I think they were scared of him, they re-homed him because they got a parrotlet he didn't get along with and decided that the new bird was better I guess. He rode on my shoulder the whole way home and bonded instantly, he didn't even want time to adjust to his surroundings, he just wanted out of the cage. Makes sense, it's small and I'm not sure I plan on upgrading it to a larger cage. The reason for that is because it's open all day though, he's only in there to eat, drink, sleep, and occasionally play. He usually sits on his perch outside the cage or jumps on my and waddles his way to my shoulder. He's doing good and I love him a lot :)
