If they know they can't fly and have wings clipped you can have them sit on the shoulder for ages and not go anywhere :) Thanks for commenting!

This is really helpful. I'm going to start trying to get my cockatiel to be comfortable with my hands starting tomorrow hopefully. He was handraised from week 1 and is now 3 months old. He's absolutely terrified of my hands. Though he'll sit on my shoulder and let me walk around the room a little with him, which is weird. But I've been wanting to harness train him and just in general have a hand tame bird, so I need to help him feel comfortable with my hands. Thank you for sharing all these tips!

You A Clown no worries at all I appreciate you commenting and helping others out too! I find when they are on the shoulder than can be ‘territorial’ and not want to come back off again so doesn’t like the hand then.... but try using the word ‘up’ and the step up technique and be persistent! I’m learning more about birds and while you have positive reinforcement down as correct but for me personally I don’t like clipping their wings (this is a very touchy subject). I understand the reasonings but they were made to fly and it’s a fantastic way to burn off extra calories. If you spend a lot of time recall training you can have a lesser chance of them flying away and if they do you can try to track them and get them back and recall them.

Don't give up, I know it's hard but you have to remember it is possible! You sound like you've done well already. I would suggest maybe training her in a seperate room to the parents to get her to pay attention to you a little more? Thanks for commenting!

@@rakinchowdhury194 that’s great! Just with the hand taming it takes time getting used to it! Birds instinctively feel more comfortable to get away when they are flying so it’s natural when they are overstimulated. Just keep trying, possibly move the cage outside too that helps get used to it!

I had my cockatiel for a year yet he isn't tamed yet, although we've bonded, I tried hand feeding he seems fine but if I try to give a seed he would hiss and runaway. I play with him and whistle with him and he's already used to me. But if I put a finger near him he'd hiss at it. May I have some suggestions to tame him?

So even if I get a hand tamed/socialized 8 week old from a breeder, they likely will bite and be afraid of hands when we bring him home? Breeder promised he will be friendly and learn to step up bc she gives them scratches and pets then before selling. Nervous he won’t connect with my kids. I know this is so late- but i got a cockatiel- hez about 4-5 months old and previous owners said he was hand tamed- i saw him with them- he was fine- but with me he is sooo vicious- he lunges at me to bite my hands But once i get him on he also sits on my shoulder He allowed my husband head scratch but then bit him too- i dont know how to train this half tame half vicious thing- any tips? I got a couple of cockatiels about a month ago. Unfortunately, a week later, the female accidentally flew away and left behind the male. He panicked and hurt himself ( bleed a little bit) :(. He refused to eat or speak. So, last week, I decided to get 2 more baby cockatiels. And now the male is literally staring at the kids all day through their cage. He even leans his head against their cage and sleeps. Just like a mother scaring losing her children. It's truly a heartbreaking scene :(

Hey Darren, they usually can be vocal quite early on in a few months. Especially with other cockatiels or birds to copy. The males are generally more chatty than females but I’ve heard loud and quite versions of both 🤷‍♂️ try repeating certain things for treats to encourage 😊

I could use some suggestions if that’s okay. I adopted my rescue cockatiel over a year ago. He still has a hard time trusting me, he does try to bite me. I do go at his pace I have for the past year. He does step up but still gets scared when I go to try to get him to step up. He’s on a good healthy diet looooves veggies, especially bell peppers. Those are his favorite. But I noticed he doesn’t like being around me. He will tolerate me in the room and when I hold him. But soon as I movie he starts freaking out. He does come on command ONLY if I have treats. I’ve noticed recently he doesn’t even like doing that any more. I’m worried he will never bond with me. It’s been over a year infact it’s been a year and 4 months now. He is out of the cage almost 24/7 I keep it open he has ALOT of toys I try using that to help bond with him. But he just doesn’t like me. He does bite every now and then when I do his food, or grabbing stuff out of his cage. Even when I’ve done step up he has bit me. I know even if he never trust me I will always love him. But that doesn’t stop the worry he may never fully trust me. No matter what I do.

Sounds challenging but you’re doing all the right things! Try avoiding things that make him want to bite… so maybe if you are cleaning the cage and it’s okay to have him somewhere else it might help as they are super protective of their safe space! I think with rescues it’s hard to ever have full human trust but it does happen so don’t lose faith! Just keep going with everything it sounds like you’re doing great. Mine still sometimes get bitey but only if they are upset, just as us humans do haha 😅 hope that helps!

I have a question.. so I have 1 cockatiel who is semi tamed and 2 budgies. my problem is that my cockatiel has bonded with them really well and so when ever I take him out he instantly tries to go back to them. When ever he’s not with them he starts singing. How can I train him if hes already bonded with them? If I separate him from them will he get sad or alone?

MiguelXI thanks for the question! this can be tough to train! Imprinting is normal for birds especially, but keen trying to spend more time around the 3 of them first and then more time with the cockatiel alone in a seperate room away from ear shot 🙏 even if they are anxious! hope it helps!

Thats so cool and thankyou! They tend to get territorial over one friend, but they will get used to each other in time.... I think hierarchy is important in birds too so once dominance is established it should come to order quite nicely :)

What should i do if my cockatiel is completely intolerant of people touching him and using the to get a treat you have to climb onto my hand method just causes him to get scared and climb away? Gabriela Pires that’s really difficult for you I’m sure! Past trauma is a hard one to get past especially if it was from humans! I would say literally you would have to move very slowly and always let her come to you. Give her as much control as you can and safety as possible and it can slowly be rebuilt. Although at 12 years old I’d say the poor girl isn’t going to get all that much better than she is at the moment. Just give her the best life you can and give her what she enjoys and it may turn around a little for you! I sincerely hope it works

Christina Bibikova you can definitely tame them it will be harder.... separation will most likely speed up the process but it also leaves them bored.... you could try taking one out at a time and take them to another room to train them?

Mandy G this is fairly common with only 4 weeks of training! Make sure you are letting him approach you first and keep the movements slow and steady! It takes a lot of patience but keep at it and keep working on routine. Birds looooove routine! 😊

Laiba Amber that shouldn’t be too difficult. With any bird it is simply repetition and reward that will work. You will have to move slowly and get it to trust you. A timeline is hard to tell but I’d say if you are spending time a few short minutes each day trying to gain its trust you should start to see changes each week. Let the bird trust you and make the first moves and you can get there I promise! 🙏😊

He will be scared but be patient and leave your hand close by for a while so he can get used to it! Persistence is key 🔑

@@jordanalexander_311 he has now Come over to eat while holding those long stiks with seeds on. Startet with the tip only and now he has Come over while My budgie was eating and ate by My finger 😊 he was watching while My budgie was eating and then he came over 😊

Emma's Chanel if it is in the first few weeks and months of life it can be quite quick as they learn fast but depending on how old or how stuck in their ways it can be a matter of weeks or years 🤷‍♂️ hope that helps!

I got mine yesterday well two to be more specific they don’t flinch away when I sit next to their cage but if I try to get them to eat from my hand both of them step back idk I am kinda losing my patience with those two I asked my father to pick them up and he almost got bitten but they were both hissing 😳

That’s classic behaviour! They are still very very new! You shouldn’t expect them to trust you for a few weeks at least.... every day spend 10-20 mins with them doing the same routine and be slow and patient - you’ll get there 😊

in my opinion, clipping a birds wings is cruel. i have a cockatiel and i would never clip his wings. hes really sweet and im trying to see if i can free flight him.

Hello . Im thinking of getting a cockateil . Some sites say that if u want to train them its better to get one. Some say they need company and you should get 2.. im confused.. can u help me.. if i buy just one is it ok or is it unfair not to him a companion..

Fair question! I believe it is fine to just have one as long as you are around to spend time with it.... If you are away long hours every day it would be better with a friend :)

Thank you so much for your reply. I decided to go for a pair of cockatiels instead of one. It's been 3 weeks and now and they are comfortable sitting on my hand and feeding. These birds have not been clipped.. and frankly i don't want to clip their wings.. I thought it's better for them to settle down in their cage before I allow them to come out of the cage.. can u give me tips as to how I can train them to come out of the cage and go back in.. since their wings have not been clipped I'm worried they will fly high in the room..and I won't be able to get them to return to the cage.. my female cockatiel understand step up..in the sense that she sees food in one have then she will step on my other hand when I ask her to . My male tiel is naughty.. he will never step on my hand . Instead fly on the cage nearest to my hand and climb onto my hand.. I really want to take them out but I'm worried they will just fly around and I'm worried how I will convince them to go back in..

Jigna Lakhani very nice choice! I’m happy they are settling in nicely! Trust is everything, you may get them flying around if you’ve given them that freedom. They will come back especially if there’s food just give them time and gently encourage them to step onto your hand. You’ll find once they fly away from the safety of the cage they will be more trusting of you over the scary new place they have flown too! So see how you go letting them come out on their own and judge it from there 😊 just watch for stuff they can get hurt on!

I did it... I got my birds out.. and they stayed on the cage... Yippeeee!!! Was good fun for the birds and my 8yr old son.. it was so cool. So it's confirmed.. no need to clip wings.. u just gotta earn their trust!!! Thank u so much for the encouragement and advise. .. feeling more confident now .

Anita Angya hey! I appreciate the comment :) as I’ve stated in my other comments you don’t have to clip wings. My guy can actually fly pretty well most of the time, he just knows he likes to stay close to me. We have a great bond and he trusts me a lot :) I really hope you can have a great relationship with your pet too! 😊🙏

I would definitely recommend a male cockatiel if you can handle the noise. Males are more likely to be louder than the females. But I've noticed the females are squawk and hissers. Males are usually better tempered. Also, I've known someone who's female cockatiel died suddenly because their egg didn't pass through correctly. It showed no symptoms and by the time they found out something was wrong, it was too late. A lot of other things can happen to the females with egg laying. So I'd just rather have less chance of losing my best friend.

My two dudes are Pepper ( as of Pepper Keenan) and Cash (as of Johnny Cash). They're brothers and both of em are quite social aldough Cash is quite the boss , and doesn't obey as much as Pepper. Still I would NEVER cut a bird's wings. That's just f*cked up. With patience no clipping is needed. Thanks for the vid !

Stun Angel I totally agree that with patience it isn’t needed at all, but I live in an area with so many flying lorikeets and other birds that often will spook my little guy and cause him to fly. It’s really for his own safety and it allows him to fly gently to the ground without disappearing and risking being hurt or injured. It does not hurt the bird if it’s done correctly. So just like you and I (probably more so you) get haircuts, it’s the same deal 😊🙏 thanks for commenting. Love the names!

Ok so this is not hate this is advise you should not clip your birds wings because... It can effect there weight It can also ruin their muscle structure in their wings and lastly they can still catch wind and fly away with clipped wings

Thanks for the input! I make sure if they are clipped I give them ‘flapping’ exercises and still allow them enough feathers to fly gently downwards. If they catch a wind yes I’ve seen them fly quite far, but I’m always aware of where they are and it teaches them to want to stay on me. You’ve made some good points Thankyou 😊
