@xeno5384 I took my kids "just to look" at the pet store the other day. There was 1 single teddy bear hammy there, we asked to hold her and right away she did a little yawn and stretch and made herself comfy in my hands. She did try to nibble my finger but it was gentle and she only tried once, lol. Long story short, $200 later we have the sweetest, most cuddly litter hamster I've ever met! I honestly can't believe how timid and trusting she was right away. I bet the employees at the store were like you and must have tried to handle her often. She's awesome! 🐹

This is one of the best taming guides I’ve seen! From my experience I know that you’re right: they are all different so you need to be prepared for anything. With Ringo I found practicing holding her in the bathtub (no water in it) with a blanket to cushion jumps was helpful. Others ranged from being immediately tame to taking most of their life to get used to me, depending on the species. My Robo named Bon Jovi took the longest.

I've had 5 hamsters: 1: zinky. syrian. never bit, slow walker but always on the move. not super interactive. 2: George. syrian. never bit, always on the move but very interactive & sometimes enjoyed a cuddle. he had absence seizures where he would freeze & be confused for hours. 3. lexy. dwarf hamster adopted at 5 months. really shy at first but became my friend, she used me as climbing apparatus. she licked and nibbled my hand a lot for some reason. 4. cinnamon. dwarf hamster. very hit and miss. unpredictable & would often attack me even after 5 months of taming, so I decided not to put my scary hands near her. 5. ginger. dwarf hamster. very sweet and responds to my voice & his name. is cool with handling, likes sleeping in shoes, & won't bite me unless he thinks my hands smell tasty. has lymphatic cancer :'( every now and again he gets freaked out by something (he's SO sensitive to change) and then he becomes war hammy, attack and don't let go of finger hammy

When I had my first hamster it took 1 week for him to get familiar with the place, but he was still afraid of me and my mother. He was completely different from how he behaved only the day before! Maybe the other one told him something😂

hamsters are supposed to live alone, never buy hamsters in cage!
@Ryuuko-chan2 жыл бұрын
@@salty9472 We treated our hamsters the best we could. Even if we had cages, before having an entire big family, the first two actually had a lot of freedom (obviously even kids and great great nieces and nephews had their free time). We would let both of them roam around the living room and kitchen for as long as they wanted, and they would always let us know when they wanted to return to their cage or have attention before exploring the living room again. When the kids arrived (fun fact, the first and second pregnancy happened both outside the cage, under our lounge chair😂), we would give each of them a couple of hours slot to roam around, and by the time we got more pregnancies, we also added the corridor and the bathroom as exploration sites but separated from each other, so they could go 2 at a time (or 4 if brothers and sisters) in each zone (without killing each other if a female found another female from a different generation, same for males) and let all 30 of them have their exploration time slot everyday. One day tho, one of them managed to pass over the box barries we used to separate the rooms, and since I lived in the factory's caretakers apartment above the offices (with the factory being behind it - and yes, me and my parents were caretakers for this place), this one lucky hamster did a complete tour of the factory and parking space (luckily over the weekend when no one worked), and as soon as he found my mother cleaning the offices, he asked to *immediately* have food and go back home in the cage! We had them checked with the vet every now and then, and the vet was always surprised of how healthy all of them were thanks to our care. He also said that me and my mother were the only ones who treated them in the best way possible compared to the other owners he knew and helped in the past (both from our town and the other places he used to work), especially because we managed to let them live longer than the average (more than 3 years). And the first hamster I took, he almost reached the current world record for the oldest hamster to live (the record is 4.5 years, our was 4.4 years)

I found that hamsters are more likely to bite you when they are in their domain, Once the time of letting them adjust in their cage is up i find a temporary transfer container and transfer them to a play space where they would feel comfortable and trial from there, It resulted in less biting for me but weird enough I’ve gotten quite used to being bitten by them to not react so i dont accidentally fling or drop the animal while holding them. Usually the nibbles i got meant “put me down!!” so id just let em go back in cage.

showing them the back of your hand is really smart. I've had mine for a couple weeks now and she bites a lot but this could be really helpful to tame her
@1luckyluxray3 жыл бұрын
@@miffy286 unfortunately it didn't go well. We never could get past the biting and she passed a month back. I don't know what her past was like, it's possible she had a negative experience that shaped her perception of people. I tried some gloves briefly but even then she ran or bit. I've heard that biting is normal though, as long as it doesn't draw blood and isn't excessive, you should have success by keeping at it. I've also heard that getting syrians from reputable breeders makes them mostly tame and doesn't give you much work, so if that's not the case with your current hammy, it might be worth looking into in the future.
@1luckyluxray3 жыл бұрын
@@miffy286 Thank you for that. I'm planning on looking into a syrian breeder in the future, once I get a place and have room for a detolf. It's amazing how ethically bred hamsters are usually ready to be handled the second they get home. I'm sure it'll be a nice contrast

Guys never give up. My female hamster named Tuittu was REALLY afraid of me since the beginning. We let her be by herself for almost like a week, because she just didn't come out much. After the first week she started coming out more even when we were looking, but as I put my hand in the cage so that she would get familiar with my scent and the presens of it, she avoided it like it was deadly. Poor baby was always so cautios and on her toes. Even tho she didn't let me touch her, I still loved her. I started trying to give her treats, her food and cucumber from my hand, and it also took a lot time before she took one from my finger, but it was worth it! After like almost a month, she started letting me and my sister touch her gently and a week after that I got to pick her up for the first time🥰 now after over 2 months, she climbs on to my hands but is still very sceptical at times, that's just the way Tuittu is😂 I'm currently also getting her a new, bigger cage

You can also try the "hamster taxi" method as mentioned at 4:11 to speed up the process. It may take longer but you will be fine once he got familiar/bored with your scent :)

ahh! I love seeing the paper roll haha. my hamster just didn't like hands in her enclosed AT ALL. When I first got her, i didn't have money for a tank or a big enclosed space yet, so i had the cheap wire cage. I would open that to let her out and she'd climb out of her own will if she wanted to wander or roam. However, after about 2-ish months of this, I had saved up enough to get her a new enclosure. Since this was a new treat, and a new homefor her, we had to find a way around my hand not being in her space, since she just didn't like it. The paper roll was the best thing, and she'd preemptively scurry to it whenever I'd come home from work when she wanted to be picked up. It was so cute haha! She used to "claw" at the glass seeing me come in too cuz she'd get excited to see me, I loved having her as a pet while she was alive. I'm hoping to get another little hamster again eventually.

I remember when my jazzy jazz bit my mom after coming home from eating seafood. My mom went to put her finger on the bars to baby talk her while my baby was climbing. She bit my mom and drew blood. Anywho. I picked her up n said " ohh you should know better than to bite grandma!!"💖💖💖 but my mom wasn't mad lol. She probably smelled the crab on my moms fingers:)

My hamster pudgy, passed away a few days before Christmas. My lovely mother got me another for Christmas! Pudgy was old and about 2-3 years old! My new ones name is marigold, Mari for short. She’s super small I hope she gets bigger. She’s sweet but I’m worried she won’t like me. I’ve left her alone so she can get used to everything. But she’s not even exploring her huge cage! Do you think she’s just nervous?

Great video! I was able to hand tame 8 pet store Winter White (sometimes called Dzungarian) dwarfs. I'd add that for them, transferring to a smaller taming/socialization enclosure was helpful because they seemed more secure in their immediate environment. Then of course, very slow hand movements with all the tips you mention. Most now actively solicit handling and a few even recognize their names and come when called.

I have had hamsters of every personality type in my life 😂 Always keep in mind that some hamsters just cannot be tamed. But you can still enjoy observing them and respect their space and solitude. Love your hammy for who they are, and not what you expect them to be like. My latest rescue was a hammy who was left with his litter too long. His tail and one ear were chewed off and he was in attack mode for the first few weeks. He was highly aggressive. After offering him fresh meal worms and fresh veggies, he has become my pal. If he hears me moving about by his enclosure, he comes out to say hello, climbs on my hand and hangs with me. He’s just wonderful. Hamsters are such quirky, hilarious, fascinating and rewarding pets. Sadly, people tend to buy them for their children because they’re cheap and don’t live very long. So they’re very easily mistreated by kids too young, and not advocated for enough.

KummaQQ I would recommend you use towel paper cut in little pieces because all of the rest are not healthy for hamsters. Also papers that are printed with ink and colors are also bad.

I use hemp, spruce and tissue :) Spruce wood shaving is considered safe in the UK and Germany as it should be kin-dried and dust-extracted before selling (by law). If you live elsewhere, please do some research before using wood shavings for your little buddies. 😊

@@KumaQQ Ooh I see. Then in that case you are totally right. Yeah, the country I live in does not follow those safety measures. I'll make sure to research further. Thx a ton!😊

So I only saw this after getting my hamsters I’ve been having them for close to a year now, I got them from a pet store and one is really defensive I can’t hold it or try to feed it from my hand because it always bites and I don’t know what to do I got 2 that were already together in the pet store so that one won’t get lonely, one is really nice and let’s me hold it whilst the other is really mean, they are not mean to each-other though.
