Simple answer: Age and the slow healing process. What would have been a minor injury in my 20s is now a riding season ender. I may have 15-20 seasons left in my life. Want to make sure I can enjoy them rather than watch from the sidelines.

Well said Barry. If you want to be enjoying riding hard enduro terrain at near 70 like me then you need to dial it back to 7/10ths, stay in condition, and invest in a quality bike and safety gear. Avoiding injury is critical: most of my senior riding buddies have retired after suffering an injury. They now ride Ebikes. I bought a new 500.

I actually took my 450 out for the first time (ever) the other day. I'm used to riding 1000cc adventure bikes on dirt. The 450 felt so tame in comparison to what I'm usually handling on dirt. My KTM 450 is half the weight and way more agile. My mountain biking experience really helped me adapt quickly. Needless to say, I'm hooked on dirt bikes! I'm still cautious when it comes to new experiences on the trail but I'm confident enough to at least attempt it and learn.

@@crosstrainingenduro I actually wore dirt bike clothing and armor while on my ADV because I was riding that bike like a dirt bike haha! I have a set of Alpinestars SX-1 knee guards and the Bionic jacket. I also have the Tech 10 boots. I actually rode my ADV bike with all of this gear. I practiced my skills regularly at an ATV park. I now own a Triumph Scrambler and that bike is way more fun to off-road than my old Honda Africa Twin. I may spend more time on my KTM though. I'm going to pay for suspension work (springs/revalve) seeing I'm 80+ pounds heavier than what the bike can handle.

I regularly find myself riding alone so I don't dare seek thrills and adrenaline. I'm also too afraid of the hospital bills so even riding with someone I still ride extra careful. The trails I ride on are also used by lots of other people. There is always 2 way traffic and blind corners freak me out because of too many close calls with four wheelers. I avoid the 2 track trails as much as possible for that reason. All it takes is one guy on a four wheeler flying around a blind turn and I'm dead. I've discovered that a lot less people ride the harder trails and the people I do see on them are always highly skilled and they also don't go flying around blind corners. They are more fun to have a chat with, I always learn something from them.

I have always been pretty good at finding the balance of adventure-seeking and just stupid. Was riding with my son last weekend and I found myself at a bit of a sketchy rock climb/traverse where the downhill edge was quite steep and I was not keen on going over on the wrong side of the hill. I knew I would do it but I wanted to have my son stand and just be a bit of insurance for me should I start going over the wrong way and I did the same for him as he went up. My son is a newer rider in his early 20's, actually just started riding seriously this year and it was also an opportunity for me to show him that risks can be taken provided you calculate them and have a backup plan. I have taken some big risks and have lived a lifestyle of adventure for many years but, I have always seemed to take a moment to calculate what are the risks and what preparations have been made for when it goes bad.

My tips for safely getting the adrenaline hit: 1. Cultivate an extreme lack of skill. A small stick across the trail or a dinner plate sized mud hole gets my heart racing every time. I know the time will probably come when I have to go in search of larger sticks and more mud, but I'm in no rush. 2. Go for inconvenience and embarrassment over outright danger. I ride ridiculously slowly and carefully (see point 1 above) - but solo and in remote areas. If I break down or get stuck in a mud hole, I'm faced with a very long hike out, or the absolute mortification of having to activate my PLB. I'm very, VERY motivated to not do either of those things, so all those tiny mud puddles become adrenaline-charged high stakes affairs.

I think the traction E crew, Dallas actually, said that if you want to ride into your 40s/50s and beyond then avoiding the big injury is key. I'm doing more technical trails in challenging terrain as part of that process. Call it soft enduro. One game I like to play is trying for a fast lap of a loop or moto without making a mistake with technique.

A beautiful woman (my other addiction) finally got me on a motorbike when I was 65 and I’ve been riding almost every day since then (4 years). I look at it this way, at 20 years old you’re risking the next 60 years, at 65 years, what’s really on the line? Still, I gear up like Iron Man even for a ride to the grocery store. But I’m riding hundreds of miles every week. The risk/reward ratio is always a factor. So far, my assessments and computations are working out.
