try staying next to it. Then it will be used to you being there next to it. and go very slowly put ur hand on a perch kind of near the cockatiel. This will let it be used to ur finger then grab a snack like millet then try feeding it.

You need to take a step Back. They are clearly afraid of your hands. You need to sit by the cage daily so they get used to your presence, then you can keep your hand at the bottom of the cage and gradually move it closer to them. During this time you can try to hand feed

Judging off how you got them as a gift. You prob don't have the right cage or proper care. You need to be worrying about getting them good care or give them away to someone who can on Craigslist...

Hey any updates on this? The pair I bought behaves the exact same way. Both move away from hand and the female (probably?) hisses and tries to peck.

I am a new owner too. When I got my first cockatiel a month ago as a birthday present, I kept him in the cage for two weeks. I didn't try to put my hand in or near the cage because even seeing me was terrifying to him. I waited for him to adjust the new environment for two weeks and then I let him out. After a few days we started taking progress. At first he stepped up on a perch instead of my hand. And it was easy for me to put him in the cage because he knows that is his safe place where he can relax and just be comfortable. Now we are slowly building a relationship. He is more easy to step up on my finger. He eats millet and vegetables from my hand, preens and take naps on my knee/hand. Just be patient and don't force your bird. I promise you will see a progress. I hope this helps to you and your little feathered friend.

@@shizuka557Hey there. I got a pair 2 days ago. Both are around 1 year old. Not hand raised and had rough handling by breeders (stuffed in a small cage with loads of other birds). They stood still for the entire first day. Then the male started chirping and screaming from day 2. They both run away from my hands and the female even hisses. They also get quite restless due to boredom most likely, especially the male one and he keeps climbing all around the cage with his beak and screams. Hence I think I should be letting them out of the cage. Or do I wait more?

@@unrealbot3027 Hello! I wouldn't do that if I were you 🙁 Just be patient and give them time to adjust the new environment. Do not put your hand inside the cage except for changing their food and water. You say people had roughly handled them, that means they already have a bad opinion on people including you 🫤 But mine was also rough handled and it has been almost three months since I got him, he comes to me only when I got food on my hand 😄 After two weeks of speaking, singing, whistling to him from a distance, I let him out and luckily he stepped up to a perch. Yours might not do that the first time. If they fly away do not go after them immediately. Wait for the bird to calm down for a minute. Because if the bird is afraid it wouldn't try to make an interaction with you. Another reason why you should wait before you let them out is we want them to love their cage and voluntarily return to it when the time comes or we take them to the cage. That's why you shouldn't put your hand in the cage unnecessarily. I know it is sad to watch them getting bored and trying to get out of the cage but it's for their own good. I also think that you're lucky that you have two birds. That means if one of them eats from your hand, the other one might think that it is safe to come close to you and eat from you. I hope they get used to you 🌸 And sorry if I made any mistakes, English is not my first language 😅
