My boyfriend and I were literally crying because we thought we were going to stress him to death because he's always curled up like that. We've had him for a week now and feel MUCH more comforted with your experience. We're going out tomorrow to buy gloves and hoodies specifically for carrying him. Thank you so much for making this video.

@@void3580 it's not a good idea to use gloves forever, but my boyfriend has a skin condition that gives him thin skin so unfortunately he does need to use gloves. We have our "hedgie hoodie" that we use when we want to hold our boy and still bond with him. It does work!

Few things I'd like to share... 1- hedgies are nocturnal, if you just wait for them to wake up on their own their much more responsive to being handled. They also are much less likely to pee or poop on you if you let them wake on their own, and their small animals so they'll likely go potty once an hour even if you don't give them treats while you have them actively out. (Mealworms are my hedgies favorite play snack, lol) 2- pine, regular kitty litter and blankets aren't good bedding for them, pine can get stuck in their skin, litter can get stuck in their privates (especially males) and blankets snag their nails and quills. I LOVE exquisite cat litter, it's recycled newspaper rolled into little tubes and makes cleaning their cage SUPER EASY! 3- when you got your hedgie he was quilling, like losing your baby teeth because your adult teeth came in and pushed them out, not very pleasant is it? It's usually a 3-4 week grumpy period, and it'll happen at least once a year though my male seems to quill twice a year. Their not like cats and dogs, you can't cuddle them all the time. 4- they HAVE TO EXERCISE, HE NEEDS A WHEEL and a hiding hut/tube, they burrow and don't like being exposed. Their nails should be trimmed at least every 2 weeks as well, and a bath once a month with baby shampoo (I've used dawn dish soap before too, it'll clean oil off wildlife it's gonna clean poop off quills lol) in mildly warm water is good for them too, just make sure you rinse and TOWEL DRY them NEVER USE A BLOW DRYER!! 5- their exotic animals which means THEY CAN'T SURVIVE IN THE WILD AKA IF YOU DECIDE TO JUST LET THEM GO, their sensitive to the cold, if they get cold they 'hibernate' which is really just them curling into a ball and dying because they can't function when their cold, please know hedgies do not hibernate it's their body shutting down right before they die! If you can't keep them 70 degrees use a heat lamp or an adjustable heat pad - their dummies, they'll cook themselves if it's too hot. They also walk off of stuff A Lot lol tables, couches, counters, they don't have depth perception apparently and will walk right off. They say hedgehogs live to be about 5 years old, a good friend of mine has an 8 year old female, which just proves with care and love life is longer. I wish you (and anyone who reads this) the best owning a hedgie!!

@@vaporyfurball8305 hi lol 3 yrs later and this one comment brings me back.. yeah a wild and native hedgie can - like NZ. But the common pet store hedgehog (also, their illegal in some states of America) is an African pygmy and 100% domesticated, it wont attempt to forage or know how to find water. If their body temp gets to low, they go into what people often think is hibernating but its more like a coma after hypothermia.

My wife and I got our hedgie when she was about 4-5 weeks old. As soon as the breeder handed her over, she crawled up my jacket sleeve. My wife had to drive us home because there was no getting her out until we got back. My arm showed the signs of her getting comfortable as well. (Ouch). For the next few months I could only pick her up with my motorcycle gloves. But she's a little over a year old now and sleeps in our laps, walks across our arms to get from one of us to the other, and falls asleep with me rubbing her belly. Sure, she is cranky at times and chuffs every evening when we wake her up, but she is perfectly comfortable spending hours with us every night now. She's the cutest little prickle in the world. We love our Pinnelope.

I rescued an abused albino hedgehog. Is old and rightfully grumpy. That makes two of us lol. I still love him and am doing all I can to make his last year or so as nice as it can be. I have always had large animals like horses and dogs and then some cats so I was new to hedgies. Totally worth it. He warms my heart.

Not sure how old my hedgie is but he came to me very unsocial. The owners gave him to a local hedgehog group, which I signed up to be a possible adoptive family. I had him in 6 months. I've had Spike for 2 years now and he's still very unfriendly. The only time he's very open is when I'm giving him a bath. That's the only time he'll let me feel his under belly. I still carry him no matter what hoping he'll warm up. I'd never give him up even if he never became friendlier. He's his own spirit. 😊

Reminder: hate is a human emotion. They are either showing frustration (from being taken away from what they're doing or from waking up) or fear. If you don't handle them enough, why should they trust this giant that's picking them up when they're naturally prey?

Belle it's so hard! But that's so kind of you to keep loving her even when she shows no affection. The world needs more people like that. I have one idea for you, and you can take it how you wish, but have you ever heard of snuggle scarfs? (Check them out on Etsy, they are a lifesaver for grumps). I have another hog, she is grumpy, and everyday as I'm eating breakfast or doing chores I just put her in there bs wear it. It's been helping a lot! She's more used to new sounds and smells, also she's realizing her popping and hissing doesn't change anything ;)

I just got my hedgehog yesterday and he's about 5 weeks old and this video is helping me so much because he seems to be bonding with my six-year-old daughter as far as he's not hissing at her as much he hasn't bit her at all but he keeps biting me every time I put my hand by him he sniffs that likes it a couple times and bites and they bite hard and they hold on for long time he likes to hiss and jump at me curl into a ball I've been able to hold him a few times without him doing that but so far my daughter and my dad are the only two that can really hold him without him totally being completely upset and this is very helpful and I know that it's a long process to get him used to not only being away from his mom but being with us so I appreciate this video thanks for posting and sharing your experience

A bite with a long hold can often be an annoiting behavior! (I have a video on my channel of this, it's a very unique behavior these animals occasionally exhibit) Often times hedgehogs can be fascinated by a certain smell, so they bite and hold on so the scent is in their mouth, then they start foaming, turn around and spread the foam on their spikes. Possibly your daughter's hog is displaying this behavior with you in particular? Best of luck with him! Patience is key as you know!

dog_n_hog thank u so much I did watch ur video on anointing and now I'm sure that's what he is doing because if I let him bite for a minute without stopping him he does turn around and start licking himself just as you explained but if I stop him from biting then he just keeps trying to bite and we did eventually Bond last night he laid on my belly well on top of my shirt and heat spread his legs out and laid completely on me with all his quills down and he slept there for about 2 hours it was great your videos help me so much thank you and thanks for your feedback it was very helpful.

This is a great video. There is a lot of misunderstanding when it comes to hedgies' nature. They do take work, most of them are not these instagram cuddly creatures from day one. Another thing is that sone breeders assure you they are "friendly and good to play with" - when in reality you usually have to socialise them for pretty long. So it is awesome that you made this video - one of the best instructions ever!:-)

I like to handle my buddy in the mornings before i go to work (6am) hes more agreeable and less grumpy after hes had a whole night of running on his wheel. i keep him in the bathroom so i turn the shower on and set a dim light to wake him up it also helps because i cant hear him hiss which makes it mentally easier to pick him up. after i pick him up ill give him a treat while hes in my hands. then ill put him down on my lap and then eventually pick him up again and put him on the floor with another treat. then let him run around while following him so hes used to my presence. keep doing this and theyll start to approach your hand because they expect a treat. been working for me. dont expect your hedgie to like being man handled. its in their nature to be scared of everything. lots of patience is required. its why i prefer to pet them with my eyes and not my hands if you know what i mean lol.

I knew that she had finally excepted me when she wouldnt stop kissing (licking) my face. I put a used sock in her cage and I try to pick her up at least twice a day for 30 minutes. She still does not let me pet her, but I just let her walk on me and sniff me as much as she wants. She sometimes bite me softly, but I think that’s because my fingers smell like her food because I feed her on my hand everyday to create a positive experience. I’ve only had her for 4 days, so I hope it will get better.

Hello! I got a hedgehog for Christmas and I’m absolutely obsessed with her and she was going around my room but she was about to go inside my closet, and it’s a total wreck so I picked her up, she got mad at me, and a few hours went bye and she still won’t walk around or do anything. I don’t know what to do exactly to make her spikes go down and love me.

I bought my hedgehog from a breeder in Fremont Nebraska. However, the breeder never allowed visitation prior to pick up which caused an issue for me considering Ro is not to keen with her move. She never really comes out of her ball and she hates to be touched. She lets me hold her with bare hands after baths because it helps the pains of quilling, but the last time i bathed her, she bit the main vain on my wrist out of nowhere. I have considered buying a different animal instead but it would destroy me to give up on her. My parents are divorced and when I’m at my dads, my mom works and doesn’t have the chance to hold her. I let her walk on the table and she’s opens up and is adorable, but she still doesn’t like me. Any additional advice for me? I love her and I really want this to improve before she decides to be mean forever.

arcticfox77 you bet! And it's totally normal to be nervous. Merf popped and hissed at me for a long time in the beginning, and it made me very anxious. Time fixes everything, and I kept forcing myself to interact constantly, and now not only is Merf better, but I am a fearless hedgehog holde,r and none of their grumpiness bothers me at all (haha). You become used to it quicker than you imagine. Best of luck!

My hedgie hated everyone when I first got him and I got poked even when I used gloves, so what I did was put a towel in my bed at night and handled him with that every day and within a week I could hold and play with him normally.

wel, i enjoyed seeing this, aldo it would not be the first idea of a pet to me, its the first i see of that, in belgium overe here u dont see or hear of that sort of things. The nicest wild animal i got when i was a kid that became frendly to me and my famely was a Male Raven. we where growing veggies and fruit back then ourselves and we worked the land. With my granddad, dad myselve, and the patties on the sides owned and worked bye other famely like uncles and nefews of me. Now.. what we noticed that bird flew above us, eventually landing close bye, not being hushed away or anything just us, minding our buisness. He got curious for some reason and got closer. Eventually being on the wheel barrow and such. (hope my englisch is sufficient, self thaught). now.. this animal got so used to us, i could pet him, he would walk with me, while sitting on my sholder allongside me, i could watch him in the eyes. He was my frend. And he got close to me as the first human he dit get close to. Eventually he got accepted bye my entire famely we where even in the news papers about it at some point. This being so long ago, i cant find any digital copy of because it was before that age. That raven got such an inpact on me, in such a good way. That i was broken to find out that some pigeon nutcase lover , with intent of getting the raven away, because of fear he would damage his pigeon sports... he poisined him.. while he was not intrested in pigeons, he was intrested to be at the field, he just was kept in the wild... living free, being a part of the famelly, visiting us evry day. I feld a emptynes inside me when he was gone. my whole famely feld it, but me in paticular, because i missed the close bond i had with my raven frend. Aldo, im now hitting almost 38 years old of age, i remember him verry well. while it is between 18-19 years ago. If i ever will have a tatoo, its gonna be the raven, sitting on my sholder with e skull and bones inside refering to death , because i had a older famely then other people of my generation, those people have all passed including my own parents. I want a text saying, true love, last forever. That, will be my tatoo, for this reason. senseer greetings to u all, i just wanted to share.

About 2 months ago I was given a 1 year old hedgie from a family with little ones, that wouldn't hardly ever pick him up. They were scared of him. I am trying to tame him, but am having a difficult time. Will he ever come around? Is there something more I could do, then the usual taming of a young hedgie that may work? He bites out of frustration, he hisses and balls up. Once I have him out of his space, he's 'easier', even cuddles, but still can't touch him or pet him without him hissing, even out of his cage. It makes me sad that he can't be a happy hedge hog! 😔

Hello I feel as if I am in the same situation as the comment down below. But I have recently adopted a hedgehog from a family who decided they did not want her anymore. They never played with her so she is not not use to humans and she is about two years old. She was previously in a small cage but now I made her one appropriate for a grown hedgehog. I have given her a week to adapt to her new cage but now when I try to hold her she hisses and pops still. I have been spending 30minutes a day with her but I have seen no improvement. Is it possible that she will come around to me? Because I just feel like she hates me but I love her and won’t give up on her. Also, is 30minutes a day not enough or too little? Please comment back with advice, I would truly appreciate it. Thank you.

now i really cant relate to this but it took me 3 days to get my hedgie to be tame because i held him all the time so that he would get use to my sent, and im sorry if this doesnt work for you and it might be because of old age and grumpiness, and if your hedgie doesn't like to be held, thats ok, its still just as fun watching them run around, but im sorry that your hedgie was neglected for as long as she was, but yeah, do literally everything with her to get her use to your scent.

I rescued a hedgehog that is guessing 2 or 3 years old. I have had him(sherman) for a week today. At first he liked to play in his ball and run on his wheel. Now all of a sudden he doesn't do anything. Do you think its just him getting adjusted or something wrong with him?
@skater20004

denise stout keep bonding with him, everyday around 8pm or later take him out and handle him, i recommend that you take him out let him run around for 10 mins or so (make sure ur area is blocked off of any cracks or places he can hide and make it hard for u to get him) then pick him up and let him sit on you, if he balls up and hisses that’s fine just pick him up with a sweater or something and let him sit on you til he opens up. I’ve had my hedgehog for a week now too she’s a year old and has been doing great with this, another tip is when they’re perfectly fine and moving but then ball up when you get near and hisses then just let him be but place ur hand about 4 inches from him to let him smell that you’re there and you’re no harm, also a really good thing to do is wear a shirt you don’t care about for 2 days straight and put it in his cage for him to sleep with, he’ll learn your scent and be easier to handle

Something that I would do is put a worn out shirt inside the cage, doing this will make them more comfortable and use to your smell. Hand feeding them is another suggestion I have read, however, if your hedgie is too afraid that might not be a good idea.
