You should check out the shop called Jungle Bob's Repitles. He runs a shop that he also treats kind of like a zoo exhibit. He has insects from time-to-time as well, and has education programs for all kinds of reptiles and amphibians, and is very responsible in sales. I often go in just to see who they have in this time and the staff will happily tell you all about the different species, how they act in captivity and in the wild, their temperaments, the temperament of this one, so on and so forth. I like going in just to learn about the different animals they are currently housing, with many of them being for sale (though they have some that are just for exhibition as well).

I received my first T (sling) about 2 months ago, and here are the things that I have learned so far; 1) Even though they are low in maintenance, you will end up looking after a bunch of animals since most insect suppliers will not sell you 1 small cricket. Right now I am looking after mealworms, springtails and crickets; the first two are fine, but I hate crickets with passion. 2) Another point where Petko also mentioned is that go for adults/juveniles rather than slings. Not just slings are more vulnerable, but with especially Grammostola species, they are slow growers. Also, slings move faster, which makes it harder to manage during rehousing, substrate change etc. 3) I personally suck at DYIs, therefore finding suitable enclosures can be a challenge. Making sure that you have 2-3 different sized enclosures (if getting a sling) is important in my opinion. 4) Mold issues. 5) You will be surprised at the level of hate that people will give to you just because you love, take care of a certain animal. Nevertheless, I love my G.Pulchra, Sabbath, and I am hoping to get another tarantula next year! Tarantulas are actually really fun!

I would definitely recommend the usage of goggles when dealing with the routine care of new worlds. If a beginner wears them from the start, they can avoid problems like I've had, where I got a hair from a B. hamori sling in my eye and spent two weeks going to the eye hospital in agony. It almost stopped me from keeping tarantulas after twenty five years of doing so. I really can't over emphasise how important good eye protection is when dealing with tarantulas, when it goes wrong, it goes really wrong!

I live in a rather cold place can I keep the Ts in a little greenhouse?
@TheSpindrift765 жыл бұрын
Check the care sheets for the Ts you like. I created a greenhouse to keep my Ts so I could better manage the temperature.
@TheDarkDen5 жыл бұрын
depends on the temperatures in your greenhouse :D

The Dark Den I see.... the thing is if I keep them in room temperature it drops till around 7-6 C and when we return home all the sudden the room is very warm due to our strong heating system “for humans”, not good for any tarantulas in my knowledge.. so i thought how else can I keep the temperature good for any of them?

As long as i remeber, I was really interested about animals and keeping them as pets, but it always seems too problematic, expensive, time consumig etc. Never it crossed my mind that i can have a tarntula (everyone hates them so you must be crazy to keep one, right?). Find dark den channel by accident. Watched a video and thought, thats wierd, but keep watching from time to time. Now i watch like all of them xD I think you doing amazing job in promoting this hobby and educating people about it. Some time ago i bought Heterometrus scorpion, then a mantis, and now I'm waiting for expo in my city (Kraków, PL) to buy my first spider. I really want Cyriocosmus elegans, but it's not going to be last xD I blame you Petko for bringin me into this. It makes me happy, really. Thanks. Keep doing what you doing.

Hi Petko, I got a Brachypelma Hamorii a few months ago, this is my first tarantula. She has molted 3 times since I got her ( hopefully ''her'' ). Now before she molted last time she got this spot on her abdomen and I was worried that she had might hurt herself somehow ( I had an enclosure that was a little to high so she was able to climb up) and when she molted, the spot was gone. I changed her enclosure to a lower one ( not just because I was scared she'd might climb and fall, but this was just more simple to take care of and move if needed to ) But she has also got the spot this time so I know it's not caused by her falling down. Is this spot just a sigh of premolting? She's had it for a few weeks now and I know premold can last long. Foto of the spot: imgur.com/a/9ywW19Y For the rest she seems to be doing absolutely fine but I just wanted to make sure this spot isn't harmfull to her. ( If any other experienced keeper can give me the awnser I'll happily accept it)

Maybe you often distrub her in her enclosure. It's a bald spot due to hairflicking. It with grow back next molt.
@jeffet58285 жыл бұрын
Yeah I also thought of that but I dont handle her when alot, maybe twice a month. and I never handle her when I think she is gonna molt soon. I open her enclosure sometimes just to refill her water dish and even then she just sits very chill. She's very docile aswell, I've seen her flick hairs maybe 4-5 times in all the time that I have her. She is quite active though even while I'm typing this she is roaming around in her enclosure.
@michaelrosssangco36135 жыл бұрын
Just lessen the disturbance in her enclosure. Making a hide also helps because it will just jusy inside instead of defensive hair flicking when disturb.
@michaelrosssangco36135 жыл бұрын
Also bracys are notorious hair flickers btw. Specially boehmei

Hi everyone, can anyone help me with trying to convince my family to accept T's? Like, we are from Portugal, and Tarantulas aren't very common here, so they are afraid or simply hate them. Any tips to try to convince them that they are awesome and not so dangerous as they think?
@lemonsgalore935 жыл бұрын
Try showing them Dark Den vids! Show the vids with the bright and pretty coloured ones, like Caribena Versicolor, or even the dwarf tarantulas that Petko has. His Spidersworld vids have some amazing shots of amazing spiders. But try catching their attention with the pretty ones first, that can make them question their opinion that every tarantula is horrible and scary. My country probably prohibits this hobby :'( but I managed to change my mom's initial reaction using the above technique. And now she watches Dark Den videos with me. :)

I've never heard "it is not written in stone" for such a long time and it feels nice to hear it again, for those who doesn't understand that. It means that it is not an actual rule that you have to follow. An example, running to stay fit, it is not the only rule to stay fit. Lifting weights, yoga, swimming, are other options to losing weight. If that makes sense.

Because of the great information from your and Tom's videos I got a Green Bottle Blue almost a year ago and she has molted five times in my care so far and went through two rehousings. Especially for the latter, I was glad to be able to see how you two handle them in a fairly unedited way so I can see what I need to look out for during my rehousings. About two months ago I have "advanced" to an m. balfouri communal and it is extremely rewarding. At first, I was a bit concerned due to the step up from new to old world but I got them as slings so they were less intimidating and due to my GBB being very skittish I'm now really used to fast-moving arachnids. The first rehouse with those nine buggers was challenging but absolutely manageable in the end due to all the infos I got from Tom and you. Currently thinking of adding my first arboreal species, been looking at P. irminia. :)
