I spoke to a tarantula keeper. His advice on a starter tarantula: always consider you might get bitten by any species. He had some species that are known to be fiesty like an OBT. He told me the spider he really had most trouble with was his ultra defensive B smithi. Yes, this common beginners species. He had one that threw hairs if he even touched its enclosure and it is his only spider that have bitten him. So he said: always consider you might get the bitchy one.

I love this because it's so true. I own many of the spiders in this video and none of them have ever shown defensiveness but I also have possessed a chilean rose hair who was legit Satan while my regalis is a big, dumb baby and my featherleg is scared of everything and just balls up.

I've been bitten by a female stroematopelma calceatum. It felt like my arm was on fire. Then the cramps started and were so violent they felt like my bones we snapping. I was actually hospitalized for 12 hours on a morphine drip which did nothing at all. I also had heart palpitations too. It took a month to get over my symptoms. It was literally my most painful experience and I've had a shattered pelvis before that.

While my exposure to a huge variety of tarantulas has been somewhat limited, I have encountered dozens of Cobalts (I used to work in a pet store). And EVERY single one seemed to come straight out of hell. They would rear up from someone simply walking by the tanks. They were the only species that I had any trepidation to. Even the Baboons were nothing all that worrisome!

I had a cobalt. Her name was Samara. She was CRAZY! She attacked water droplets, would threat pose when feeding. She spent a lot of her time hidden. One day she was ambushed by ants and I had the hardest time getting her out so I could save her. She flipped onto her back and started popping her body up trying to strike. She lost a leg (my fault trying to move her out). Sadly a month later I lost her 😔. Gorgeous T but man was she intimidating!

Yeah the pet store I used to work at (small family owned place) always had a Cobalt Blue for sale. I still remember trying to move that thing into the little cardboard box for someone to buy and we stressed that this one isn't one to handle and definitely not for beginners. Well, that Cobalt bolted up my arm and posted up on the back of my neck. To say I was nervous was an understatement. But I calmly turned around and my coworker got him(?) in the box. Needless to say I went out and had a cigarette after that. We never moved those without a second person.

Of all the species I ever kept this is the only one who managed to escape and get loose in my house for 3 weeks. We had to implement a no bare feet rule until we found Him. And how did we find him? Well one night my friend called me (back before mobile phones, in the haplopelma days lol) I had a landline phone on the floor next to my office cos that's as far as the cord would reach. Usually I would blindly grab the receiver to answer, but this time instead of just reaching for the phone, I looked - and there he was in full threat posture on the receiver. Needless to say I missed my friends call because I was very slowly reaching for a catch cup. He was successfully read captured and lived a long healthy life.

You didn't mention any of that in your original comment, and there are many 60-year olds that are still very healthy and going strong, so it sounds like it's your health issues holding you back, not necessarily age. EDIT: I was just saying that a healthy 60 year-old could still own spiders, so your reason for not owning them should be due to your illness, not your age like you mentioned in your original comment. Of course your health comes first. Sad to hear about what happened to your pets thanks to the horrible woman you married, but that had nothing to do with the point I was trying to make.

@@IllusionQueen4Eva So right now I am dealing with lymphoma cancer, that said, my life is most important to me. If and only if I decide to ever keep another Tarantula, it will have to be when I defeat this illness FIRST! But I have poetry to copyright and publish and other ideas that I want to accomplish and this is foremost on my agenda right now! I have my memories, but if you really want to know why I stopped collecting Tarantulas, I will tell you! I was married to a very, very jealous woman whose anger got the best of our marriage! I had a brain tumor growing in my head that I didn't realize and my ex-wife decided to tell a lie to authorities about something untrue because she couldn't prove that I was cheating with other women and the Roseville Police came out and confiscated the last 31 Tarantulas I had back in 2004, mind you that she was dating a married man during the 1rst 3 years of our courtship before I caught on to her! That was the first time I cried in a very, very long time! When 2010 came around, the neurosurgeon at Henry Ford Hospital told us about the brain tumor, she still wouldn't accept it! But there's 3 things that I did do right 👍 in the last 13 years! First, I accepted Jesus, The Christ as my Lord and Savior! Two, divorced my ex-wife; the woman who loved me with all of her hate and said that she wanted to see me with absolutely nothing and Third, got past My Anger, eventually forgiving her and moved on with my life! Yes, I will always LOVE SPIDERS, no matter if they are small Orb Weaver 🕷️ Spider 🕸️ or Tarantulas, but my life is and being Victorious over my illness is MY HIGHEST PRIORITY right now!! Tarantulas will have to wait and if I really want to, I did have 1 African Emperor Scorpion 🦂 once, so I may just purchase another one of those 1 day. Maybe? But right now, I'm in a fight that I have NO INTENTIONS of losing!! No Weapon Formed Shall Prosper Against Me As Long As God Is With Me And I Can Do All Things Through Christ Who Strengthens Me!!! And This IS What I Believe And Live By!!! Thank You! Peace!

Holy Crap, Richard, I just got into Tarantulas in October 2019. I was determined to overcome my fear of spiders and have been very picky about the few I have chosen and am still trying to learn the Scientific names. I have been a subscriber of yours for a while now and I must say, this video had me worried. I'm still somewhat afraid of the main reason I started getting Tarantulas and that's because I have seen Black Widows around my house. Not very often at all and years ago but it terrified me and I'm afraid of Brown Recluse too so when I heard you mention New Worlds, I was a bit concerned. I never plan to own Old Worlds or a great deal of Tarantulas. I definitely don't want an Orange Bitey Thing :-). I Love your channel and come to it often to learn or to just enjoy it. Glad you're here for me to come too. I never plan to handle mine and will be keeping my face and hands not too close because I don't want to deal with the hairs. I'm more worried about protecting my face and eyes from the hairs. I only have slings and my Hapolopus sp Columbian Large...Hope I did that right is tiny tiny tiny. I think taking care of my slings worries me more than anything else but I wanted to grow with them. Thanks for the video. I'm glad you made it.

I absolutely love your channel. I binge watch on my Roku on the big flat screen then go on my laptop to thumbs up and sometimes comment. Keep up the Awesome work.

@@bobbiscrittercave2348 I just don't want anything getting loose in the house that could be potentially harmful. I have panic attacks and am learning to control the Spider part of it. I'm not one to scream and jump on a table if I see a mouse anymore but I'm a mom of 4 so Black Widows and Brown Recluse gotta go. I haven't seen an Old World I would own and a Huntsman....Oh Hell No!!! Excuse my French!!! No OBT either. My Poop Cannon just arrived yesterday along with my Hapolopus sp Columbian Large. That's funny though because I have small ants in the yard in the summer that are bigger than my Pumpkin Patch and the ants will bite the crap out of you and yes, it soooo sucks. You kinda should be worried about brown recluse and black widow. They can do serious harm. Tarantulas’s are completely different. I too got into tarantula to curb my fear of spiders. (I don’t think that fear ever goes all the way away) I also got them because they fascinate me. If you don’t like a tarantula defensively slapping at water dishes when you fill it. Maybe don’t get a T. Vagans. Get a B hamorri instead, they are truly sweethearts.

P irminia is one of the few I have never owned over the past 25 years. P. murinus isn't that bad to deal with at all. After all of the horror stories I heard about them I only witnessed threat posturing maybe 4 times. I never had more than 56 Ts at any one time and most were the unfreindly sort. Problems with real aggression only existed with the cobalt blue. I don't harass or handle Ts (because I'm still very arachnophobic while thinking keeping them will eventually erase the phobia entirely). I find that defensive posturing is generally rare and that most horror stories are from people who agitate them. Was your irminia genuinely aggressive or just defensive while rehousing? Hopefully nothing like the cobalt blue.

I don’t know- one of the scariest fucking things I ever saw was a pair of rehousing videos of the Orphnaecus dichromatus. The Old World Tarantulas seem very fast and aggressive and possess medically significant venom that can leave humans in sickness and in a lot of pain. I am shocked at how confrontational such as the OBT (Orange Bitey Thing/Orange Baboon Spider) and Cobalt Blue Tarantula are in that they're known for having a vicious temper, lightning speed, an extremely painful bite and of course medically significant venom. They are also very beautiful creatures. But for inexperienced tarantula keepers, these spiders are very bad news.

I had a cobalt blue as my second or third T. Having had just a Chillian rose and common pink toe. A local pet shop had it but none of the staff would go near it even to house it so they called me and asked me to take it 🤣. Learning curve. It was wild caught as well which made it even worse. How I wasn't bitten is beyond me. It climbed the tongs, bit holes in a catch cup leaving a pool of venom at the bottom and it would charge if I even walked by its enclosure. In the end I had to rehouse it to a really deep setup to allow it to build a deep burrow where I virtually never saw it again

Hello Richard, thanks for the video very informative. I'm a new keeper and my 1st T was a Gooty sapphire sling. And unfortunately after its 1st molt. It just died on me. I was so upset about it. But I didnt give up. My next Ts I wanted was the GBB and the Ornamental Baboon. I ignorantly got because how beautiful it was. And didnt think about how dangerous it could be. But I must be a lucky beginner. Because my ornamental Babboon my son named hulk. Is very calm and easy going. It started showing itself about a month ago. And now every night we get to watch it roam around its enclosure. And just a few days ago spiderman our GBB T. again our son named both our juvenile Ts. :) it has started showing itself. And over the last few days. And has been coming out day and night checking things out In its enclosure regularly. As a new keeper I never plan on handling our pet Ts. I just learned after watching your channel. To not be sacred anymore and really found a respect and appreciation for trantulas. I just figured what amazing observational pet trantualas would make. Just feed and care for. Leave them be and enjoy watching them. No desire what so ever to physically mess with them. That's just not my thing personally. So thank you for that. And the Gooty was the 1st T I saw on your channel that didnt make me get freaked out. And is by far my favorite to this day. So I've been doing some searching. And found a juvenile Gooty I'm going to try to keep. And hopefully not being a sling and more juvenile Ts like my other 2 Ts. I can care care for it as I have spider-man and hulk over the last few months. Just wanted to share my story with you and the other keepers. It's been an enjoyable 6 months so far. And with my Ts cruising around so much lately its just amazing to watch them. Keep putting out the great content.

She’s got such a sour attitude for an Aphonopelma and she’s my only T to ever strike without a threat pose-and she kicks hairs every time I move her enclosure even a nudge. She’s also commonly in premolt for two months+ at a time which makes her even crankier. That being said, I’m totally prepared for my P Regalis to be Satan incarnate once she mature fully. My only tarantula was a Cobalt Blue. I had it before the internet. I wanted a tarantula. I saw it in a pet store and thought it would look cool climbing up my arm. I learned pretty quickly it was not one of "those" tarantulas the first time I touched it. He tried to kill me.The people at the store knew nothing about it. The T kept climbing the enclosure that it came in and stayed in the top corner. There was very little substrate. It would threat pose when I walked into the room. It didn't seem like normal behavior. So I bought a book about tarantulas. I found out through reading that it was a burrower. I got an adequate enclosure with enough substrate and a cork bark structure. The first re-house was a true eye-opener. I have never seen anything as fast and angry in my life. Lol. After that, we got along fine. Love the videos.

You mentioned having 3 tarantulas of one of the species that made your list for this video that were freebies that you never ordered and I've noticed how common that is with online dealers. Almost all of them offer free tarantulas with an order and some of them are just random which has actually deterred me from wanting to order online because a lot of freebies are old world species that for now at least I'm wanting to avoid. I've seen old world species that could move faster than the strike of a snake and I've got 20+ years of experience with every snake in the world but I'm rather new to spidering and im worried they might send me some vicious little monster as a freebie. Good video! I still remember the first time I heard of a baboon tarantula, I think it was the OBT. I thought to myself that's gotta be a feisty one LOL. Anything referred to as a baboon usually isn't friendly so it came as no surprise to me when I read up about his temperament and sure enough there was even a picture of him giving a threat pose.

I got OW and NW Ts, ive only been in the hobby about 7 or 8 months, but watching your vids made me get so many, im up to 13 Ts now, with many more to come. Keep the videos coming man, helps out alot of us new and some expert keepers. When you can man make a video on the H. Longipes and the C. Dyscolus. Happy keeping brotha!
