Mike, your channel and the information you provide is pure Quality!!! From California, I sit here and watch your incredible videos and I have put together a Crawfish Trot line that I am so excited to use at my local lakes. I have fished all the southern California lakes for Bass for my entire life. I am 54 and a bit slower than year prior and Crawdad trapping is what you got me all pumped up to do now so I am going to drop my traps in the lakes using your tips and the stuff I have learned here this spring and see just how big our Crawfish are here in Southern California - I have a creek local to where I grew up in town that is plum full of crawfish the Louisiana Swamp Species but I am going to plan this summer to get up to Northern Cal where the Signal Crayfish are. they look so big - loved your video on Lake Tahoe and the commercial guy fishing them there. But this video on how to Taxidermy your Crayster is just off the hoook!! this now has taken my anticipation to a whole new level!!!!! it is all your fault Mike....lol...now all I am obsessing about is trapping crawfish. Come on spring time and warmer waters. CHEERS! THE FINISHED PRODUCT LOOKED SO INCREDIBLE. what a great gift. you are a good friend to have. thanks for ALL the GREAT INFORMATION AND TIPS!! YOU GUYS ARE TOPS! PS. the trout mount looks incredible with the crawfish swimming away before getting eaten. you should title your mount with a brass label " the great escape "

I think about getting a blue one for aquarium but i would like to preserve it blue so no cooking. Can i put it in alcohol first maybe a month or some weeks and then take it out and put it in salt to dry it? I dried once a crab that died in salt. I love them in our natural history Museum they look lovely in a glass case with dark blue background or black paper.
@Spring_rhys4 жыл бұрын
I’d be careful using alcohol. I tried to preserve a crayfish in some a while back, and a lot of the color got leeched out. Went from a pretty purple-black to almost ghostly looking. I think not cooking the crayfish would probably be fine in this process, it’d just make getting the meat out a little harder
@AjOrtiz4209 сағат бұрын
Nice way easier than I thought. Got a huge one in my native tank and was wondering how I could still have it even after it passes in a year or two
@cdscheide4 жыл бұрын
Cool! You can also pickle them in a saltwater solution after you get the meat out. 1 cup/gallon of water. Leave them in for a day or two and you're good to go. I have done fish heads this way and they have lasted 20 years.

Silly question! I had this tiny crawfish as a garnish on my plate last week that I want to taxidermy and turn into a little chef. It’s probably no more than two inches long. Should I make little holes in the claws?
@crayster39262 жыл бұрын
I would in the under side where you cant really see them. May be put a little salt in the holes also. Then shake it out after it dries.
@OldManAndTheSea3 жыл бұрын
Also I don’t think I will be able to remove the meat from the crab I am going to taxidermy if I cover it in salt for 10 days then coat in enamel that should be fine right? Also can you make a video on how you taxidermy fish would love to do some of my trophy halibut or salmon

Have you ever thought about making a foldable or collapsing version of your model trap? That would allow easier transporting and take up less space during storage. You might be able to come up with one that would sell nicely. If you make one I'll know where you got the idea. That would be a hoot. Been a sub'er from almost day one. Best wishes, Mike.

Do you think it'd be possible to do a soft mount with a crawfish? My mom was kayaking and she found this decent sized dead one and we've been affectionately calling him Carl. He is currently being preserved in salt till I find someone who can or would do such a thing. I posted some funny pictures of him on my dating profile, and I kinda want to take him places to take more photos of me and him. For shits and giggles, that real tomfoolery ya know?

Instead of all of that i would just keep it in a jar with alcohol , then make a plexiglass mould and they put epoxy resin+ hardener in the mould 1/3 of the way and then wait for it to dry and then put the crayfish/crawdad inside and fill in another 1/3 of the way , and then wait and then when it gets hard just fill in the rest and if there are bubbles i would use a butane blow torch to get rid of them to make it clear and then wait. And there you go.
