I have a huge Phal that’s dehydrated floppy leaves and the flowers are starting to wilt but I just repotted her 2 weeks ago took her out of that moss bark mixture. She’s in Orchiata now I wonder if I should use steeped tea to water her with for now.
@TheOrchidHut3 жыл бұрын
Well...this is what I would do since the orchid is already potted: When it needs to be watered again, I’d make the tea solution and just soak the pot for 10 or 15 minutes early in the day. You don’t want it to stay wet all day because it won’t be able to dry out at all by night.

Can this be done on orchids with no roots
@TheOrchidHut2 жыл бұрын
No, this technique won’t help a rootless orchid. You may want to search for the techniques of hovering an orchid over water or orchid in a sphagnum moss bag for your situation.

It won’t hurt to try it. However, even orchids have finite lifespans. Sixteen years is a long time! Be sure to address any other issues while you have it out of the pot, too.

does this method work for vanda orchids too? hoping to rescue a vanda orchid which only has two roots which are about 2-3 inches in length and the orchid was given to me as bare rooted. the plant has wrinkled leaves too.
@TheOrchidHut Жыл бұрын
It should work as long as those two roots are still functioning. You may have to do the soak for more than 3-4 days. Be sure to change the water for fresh if you do more days. Good luck!

Can any other orchid be hydrated in tea
@TheOrchidHut3 жыл бұрын
It won’t be harmful, but the visual results might not be so noticeable. Also, it won’t work if the orchid has no roots or is too far gone.

What medium do you repot it in? I am not a fan of sphagnum moss.
@TheOrchidHut3 жыл бұрын
I use a pre-made orchid mix from RepotMe for all of my orchids, including the Phals. When moving from sphagnum moss to bark for the first time, I will mix in a little extra moss into the regular bark mix so the adjustment is not so drastic. I am relatively new to maintaining orchids. Just wanted to clarify, I want to try this tea method for one of orchids given to me, if this works as planned, once the leaves are a bit more firm, less wrinkly and the roots are sustainable, how long do I soak it in water before repotting it in a fertilizer? You mentioned a year? Or did I mis understood? Thanks much for all this information!
@TheOrchidHut Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your question! So, follow the tea soak for 3-4 days, then you can immediately repot. If you follow any of the Phalaenopsis repot videos in this playlist, you will be on your way to success: kzbin.info/aero/PL82EmOyPoMFpw7TLMz9YohQRwdaSReGz6 Then, just a regular water/fertilizer/flush regimen after that. I have other videos on my channel when you are ready for that. Good luck! 👍

@@TheOrchidHut thank you! I am on last day soak. It seems that they firmed up some for sure but some still a bit light brown / orange color especially on the mid section. @TheOrchidHut3 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for the very nice comment about orchid learning from my channel. *Happy!* Does your dendrobium have any roots at all? Generally, new growth and roots come before a bloom! LOL - confused it may be. If it is just one bloom you can leave it - no harm. If it is a full spike, sadly, probably the best thing to do is cut it off so the plant can concentrate on root production. Let me know if this helps.

@@elycesacrylicpouring2815 well...as long as it seems to be supported in the bag with moss for the moment, it is probably best to continue this until it (hopefully) decides to have a new cane growth - at which time there should also be roots. I have soaked my orchids (young Phal and Dens) in weak tea before, with visible improvements. My NEW problem is I have a grown Phal with 3 blooms, but the leaves have begun to show signs of wrinkling. Can I still give the plant with blooms a weak tea soak? Because of my geographical location (Caribbean), the medium I use is charcoal and pebbles, and I water every day, or 2 days with rain water. My Orchids are not "housed", but in a location where they get wind, light and water, and the humidity is stable.
@TheOrchidHut2 жыл бұрын
It should be OK. I’m not sure the root system will dry out overnight though. You could maybe consider soaking every other day to allow that to happen. I do think I would flush the pot really well when the soak is complete, too.

@TheOrchidHut Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching…but, tell me more. Why would an epiphyte be grown (or thrive) in water?
@brandonallen9853 Жыл бұрын
@@TheOrchidHut I'm a member of my local orchid society here in Texas. We were shown a specific strategy called hydroponics in which many epiphytic orchids can actually be grown in water. The plant itself is not actually growing in the water per day but the roots are mostly submerged in water in a container that will hold the plant above the water level. You don't want the crown in the water. This strategy helps to grow more effectively specific orchids like phalaenopsis in a way where the plant can continually take up however much water and nutrients it needs from the water. Just keep the water level up. I've seen many kinds of orchids do well growing in water and bloom beautifully. It cuts down on the amount of root damage and underwatering and over watering. The plant is perfectly self sustaining in this manner without our influence other than keeping the water level up.
@TheOrchidHut Жыл бұрын
@brandonallen9853 thanks so much for the explanation. I’m an educator, so I always ask “why” things work! What is done about fertilizing in this case? I imagine the water has to be refreshed from time to time, too. I do wonder about the long-term (years) effects of this growing method. I’ve grown vegetables in a similar fashion, but never anything that lives longer than a season. I have read that orchid roots only uptake what they need, hence the reason why soaking Vandas for 10-15 minutes is long enough but several hours doesn’t hurt. Thanks again for your detailed comment!
@brandonallen9853 Жыл бұрын
@@TheOrchidHut just add your fertilizer to the water. The orchids can be planted if you get tired of the water culture, but for me this works better to grow my phals like this or mounted. I can't grow them potted up. They always die.
@TheOrchidHut Жыл бұрын
@brandonallen9853 I might give this a try down the road to experiment. It’s vastly different from how I have been successful with Phals. Everyone should do what works for them!
