My grandson is 1 year and two months old. He does not give eye contact at all, he doesn't respond to his name at all and he stopped speaking words he used to say like mama, dada and baba. It is really sad to see and I told my daughter she needs to get early intervention now to get him on track. I have a daughter who is autistic and she had the same issues when she was little. She didn't learn to walk until she was three because she had such bad issues. I don't want him to struggle like she did because I didn't know what to do. Back then things were different, but now there are loads of resources available and doctors are realizing earlier the signs.

How do you fade out the reinforcements? Has a child ever had tantrums/meltdowns associating the reinforcement with his/her name?

Fading reinforcement is a plan that must be individualized per child. Unfortunately I cannot provide individual support. Many families have found my free workshops helpful! Marybarbera.com/workshops

He started walking by 10 months...but has never said any words or and has poor eye contact and none wid strangers. But he doesnt cry in malls new surroundings, rather enjoys the running around. Just recently he repeats after us, one or two words, that too not so clearly. What can we do to make him talk. Another thing....he remembers the sequence of tye rhymes exactly....and says few words of the rhymes at the exact moment....pls help

How can one teach one's child to say his name when using Sd 'whats your name'?
@marybarbera5 жыл бұрын
This is a very important skill! I talk about this in my courses . First off you always want to start off with assessments to make sure it is important to teach that skill at this time in your childs development. Teaching things at the wrong time can shape up weird language. Check out my free workshops here; bit.ly/2ELvSnM

Thank you for posting this. My 3 year old son will turn and look when I say his name but will not answer to it. At daycare when they do attendance they call out his name.. and he doesn’t respond out loud. If we ask him his name, he won’t respond. If he sees a pic or video of himself and we ask who that is, he will say his name. I will try this technique and see if it works well. I also have the bad habit of calling him buddy or sweetie etc when talking to him positively. I bet you that is why he does not know his name or respond to it properly. It makes sense.

You should help him do it. He's not responding because he don't know what is expected. You should turn him around with your own hands or with the assistance of someone else, then reward the action just like Mary is talking about in the video. You repeat this in different situations over and over. Take notes and evaluate everything. My son is extremely interested in trains, cars, busses etc. He also loves riding in these things. Whenever we're out driving and I see a train or buss (something more rare than a car) I'll call his name + "watch, there's a train". Because he loves these things it serves as a reward in itself just seeing it. He's now paying much more attention to his name when I come into the room. He used to be totally oblivious and still is at times. Sometimes it's just comical how far off he is when he's in his hyper focus zone. For example, I can try to scare him if I'm on the other side of a window and he won't even take note, just goes about with his own stuff. He's fantastic.

Thank you so much for posting this. My beautiful goddaughter is 2 years old and doesn’t not speak, respond to name, simple instruction or greetings. She does not use creative play as of yet, not due to a lack of trying I can assure you. Limited eye contact with family , Non with strangers. It looks as though autism might be the reason. I am going to try these techniques regularly. Her name is Marlie-Rae. 💜

@Mary Barbera my little one is 18 months at the moment and most of the times he is not responding when we calling him by his name, also is not pointing out things and walking sometimes on the toes (not very often), when running he keeps his right hand up and sometimes when he is angry he tries to pull his hair out and all he can say at the moment is "mama, nana, tata, papapa, baba, lalala and some other sounds,but he is smiling a lot back to us, he is laughing, he is making a lot of eyes contact, he likes to play with children, he likes to give us lots of hugs and asking for it; we realize it couple of days ago abd we start thinking that maybe, because he spend between 1- 2 hours and up to 3 -4 hours per day in front of Tv, tablet or phone (we both went to work and our mother in law was looking after him ) from the age 8-9 moths is the reason why he is having this symptoms. 2 days ago we decide to stop him from watching any gadgets or Tv and we can tell that is different, believe or not he start playing more with the football, pushing one of the cars on the floor and not playing with the wheels like he used to do and he started looking to us when we calling him by name from very close distance twice a day; from our point of view there is a small difference in a pozitive way...My question is if there is any chance that this more a virtual "autism" and not a classic one?

Think of it differently. We use short sentences and cues with our pet because we are keeping our language simple and using all our resources (gestures, facial expression, body language) to help them understand the task. It is the same with young children. If I want to learn a skill, let's say how to repair an engine, I hope the person teaching me with use simplified language and visual supports to help me. Otherwise, I won't be very successful at it! Same here! ;)

U can see it however u want but it helps , better then looking at your kid confused bot able to communicate , u have to be parent if an autistic child to know how painful is to not be able to talk with your child or ur child bot being able to tell u what wrong and you are just guessing while the kid is in pain or anything else
