I've learnt that questions such as these are quite useful: "I see a problem in this sentence. Do you see it?" "Why can't we use this verb?" "Would you like a link to practise [topic]?" I've found that this places the ball in the student's court. It also gets them thinking and analysing their work. STT can also be maximised in this way.

I saw this video suddenly, first I’m really sorry to hear that then I would like to introduce myself I’m a student of Acadsoc. Probably the majority of Chinese students are single kids so they don’t wanna accept others’ advices. Don’t take them seriously! Secondly probably they got a lot of pressure from both schools and parents. By the way you Kareen you are a professional teacher The students who are studying with you are very Lucy keep going

I've dealt with both European and Chinese students for about five years in the past and have handled Chinese students who also cut me off with endless "I knows" during sessions. One of my students explained to me that when they repeatedly say "I know", he means to say that he "understands". Oftentimes, it's the language barrier and misunderstandings that get in the way and as teachers, it's our job to understand them and show empathy regardless of how rude, bored, or aggressive they are in class. I have to admit though, I have confronted some students (lovingly) on their bad behavior in the past.

Hello, Teacher Karen! I have a regular student and we have more than 200 classes together and I can see that He's so familiar with me and my actions. I always try to ask him relevant questions but sometimes I feel like he looks down on me and he tells me what to do and shows disinterest in the class. It hurts me because I think of him as a good boy and we also shared great moments together. I feel gloomy because of this. π^π I always try to brush it off. But I really can't hide the fact that I'm hurt. I always try to give him my support despite of all of this.

We are just humans teacha, it really is upsetting when our "babies" turn into bad babies. But it happens, that's why it's important that from the beginning, you have already shown a little parent-like authority. For example "Uh uh, when you need something from teacher, you say it nicely and you say please" .... things like those, so they know that even though you are not an authoritarian figure, you are to be respected.

The sad thing is not every student is open to feedback...thus, if you get a response like this, maybe you can ask the student's permission if they wish to be corrected in terms of grammar, pronunciation etc... if so, your corrections must be thorough and you must explain the rationale behind the error :)

I always empathize with the student. This is what I mean: Try to imagine the class from their point of view, and think - did the teacher (you) do something wrong? Was he/she impatient, rude, inconsiderate to you in any way? If the answer is no, then it's obvious this child has inner frustration and it has nothing to do with you!

I agree. I wondered if the student may have been beating HERSELF up about it. Like “duh! I know, I know, I know. I’ve learnt this but here I am, still getting it wrong …” That said, I can see the teachers frustration about being spoken over. Especially if this student’s constantly cutting her off.

Hello teach, I honestly don't review it anymore since I am familiar with the materials already. However, when I was starting out, I would review ALL the materials before I start my shift. This helped me become more confident to teach and to prepare ahead of time. I highly recommend you to do this on your first 1-2 months. It will help you feel more confident :)

A kid and a teen did that to me, for kids I made a face, I said "Aww, that makes teacher sad. Teacher loves you ♥️" then I redirected to the lesson and left notes for the parents. For teens and adults, you just have to nicely inform them that you wish to be treated with respect as you are only trying to help them. Then -deadma- then redirect to lesson :)

teacha Karen just wondering why they need to enroll in an esl course when they already know basic English?. One more thing, are the classes you conduct recorded? thanks.
@TeachaKaren2 жыл бұрын
Yes, because they may still want to increase their proficiency in the language. classes in Acadsoc are recorded, yes :)

Teachaaaa on my very first class, a 9 yr old kid messaged me on the chatbox, "I will report you, you're just chatting other boys" HUHU HAHHAHAHAH kakastart pa lang nga ng class eh. I didn't mind the message, just continued the class. lol I was a bit shocked though.
