This worked perfectly! We did it first inside with no distractions, second moved to outside with little distractions and then moved into an area with a little more distraction. After building the foundation moved to giving 'treats' every other time, then moved to every third time until we didn't need treats every time. It also worked great to do it during meal times so they had to work for their breakfast & dinner. Thank you!

I love this channel. I just got a 1 year old 30lb hound mix, she's shy & nervous but so sweet once she warms up to you. Currently in the first phase of house training. She tends to pull on the leash a bit, the collar and harness I have for her are a bit too big so I need to get smaller ones, and she isn't liking any treats we give her. milkbone biscuits(got the variety flavor) she doesn't like, and for training we have peanut butter biscuits and chewy chicken bites and she doesn't like either. what she does like is her pig ears and rawhide. so I can't really train her if she won't eat the training treats haha! but this is so helpful, I'm going to be here nearly everyday!

Thank you SO MUCH for these tips, Instructor Steve! I have been training my five-month-old Goldendoodle using many of the training videos given for free (Thank you!) by McCann dogs. My puppy had been developing a real pulling issue, but this morning on our walk she did much better after I implemented one of the things you suggested. Instead of saying, "no pull!" when the leash tightened, I simply used the "quick few tugs" method you suggested. It worked! Thanks very much for sharing the wisdom you have gained through training your own dogs.

You can use different equipment or make use of the harness that have a clip at the front. Loose lead walking clip at the front, and the one on the back if you need to get somewhere quicker. Driving to the park if you own a car and letting your dog off or using a long line so they have no chance to pull x

A tip to not have the dog be so hard to work without treats is to avoid picking up treats before desired behavior, most dogs will connect the dots and understand that tricks are only worth doing if the treat is already out. Instead, with a bit of practice and large pockets/a large pouch - you can time your treats as well by simply being quick to pull it out and give it to the dog ^^

Interesting the techniques. I am getting there with my rescue who has had no leash training at all. Prefer your method to one I saw on another American channel - actually it seems much quicker - you simply use a prong collar, and yank the dog everytime it pulls and ignore its yelp. Yep that was a "qualified trainer". Impressed everyone with his paperwork, where you analyse why the dog is pulling and reactive (simple without the paperwork, the handler has got things wrong and needs some guidance!!! Anyway after all the paperwork, it was really simple - no commands or communication other than a yank on the prong collar.................. Think I will continue with the kinder way you suggest!

The 3 D's: Distance Distraction Duration When any one of them goes up the other two must go down. Example: Stay command for a minute (long Duration), requires a short distance (for correction if the dog attempts to get up early), and little distraction (so the dog can focus on the command).

Love this technique for the most part. I would love to see using something other than the bumping of the leash. I think some people would progress that to actual hard leash pops. I love seeing the different ways to teach something so difficult. Thank you!
@McCannDogs5 жыл бұрын
Hi there, Kim! To be fair to the dog the rate at which you’re popping on the leash may need to be faster. If a harder pop is required then you may be waiting too long before adding the leash correction. What’s really important in an exercise like this is using just enough “bump” or “pop” to effect change. Then pour on the praise when your dog is back with you. The moment your leash has tension you need to start using those bumps! This is how the dogs begin to understand that the “cue” is leash tension and they’ll begin to fix themselves before it gets any tighter! Thanks for watching! ~Ken
@kimhunter51455 жыл бұрын
McCann Dog Training Hi! I don’t use leash corrections in training. Which is why I was thinking that this technique could be modified a bit for me and while If I did use corrections like this I would use it early so it would be mild, I know with the normal pet owner, things could escalate easily and quickly. I would rather that not happen. You all work on attention skill a lot in your videos, so as just a question, why not come up with an interrupter word that is also highly reinforced to get attention? Just thinking out loud. Like I said, I like 99% of this technique you have shown and it would be easily taught in a group setting. And I am sending the puppy potty training videos to my in-laws for their puppy. They are having issues and are not close to me so I can help.
@McCannDogs5 жыл бұрын
You are certainly thinking the righty way, Kim! The earlier, the better and you’ll be able to reinforce the great behavior without having to redirect! The challenge most people have is that their environment overwhelms their dog (and them in some cases). If you are able to interrupt your dog from leaving by using your voice and they are still on a loose leash, then that is ideal! It’s such a nice way to reinforce the choice of staying with you! When dog owners start to increase the challenge for their dogs, they need to have great timing with their voice, and what will often happen is that they are constantly talking to their dog to maintain that attention (which is a double edged sword unfortunately). If the only way to maintain attention is to be speaking constantly, the value of voice begins to diminish. And at some point while increasing the challenge, the dog will inevitably make a mistake. This is actually a good time for the dog to learn “what isn’t allowed”. By using the leash to redirect your dog back then praising when they return to you, it begins to put a little onus on your dog to work a little harder. By starting to discriminate between the “good responses” with praise, and the “GREAT” responses with a high value reward, your dog starts to choose you because you are valuable. Because dogs will do what’s rewarding, you’ll start to see your dog looking to you more often and offering you that attention because you’ve established a history of reward for doing so. I really love answering questions like this, as we often get to show this to our in-class students but it’s much more difficult to show the behavior change over time on KZbin. I think there’s another video that you’ll find helpful on our channel that talks about some simple ways to be more “magnetic” with your dog. Here’s a link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/raDKcnmLrNKYidk Thanks for watching! ~Ken

Before we did it with clicker which worked out too but then I lost the clicker. I'm so excited for my next puppy and how I will train leash manners. I thought about using the clicker, directly using collar for nice walking and harness for pulling plus training to respond to leash pressure. I live in the city, and have a (rescue) dog who attacks other dogs, so we have to keep her on the leash when taking her out to pee and poo. How can I communicate the difference between needing to heel, and walking politely but being free to sniff and pee, etc.?

Teach a break/free dog command. When you give that command, they're free to be a dog, then you call them back to heel/be with you. That way they're clear when they're 'working' and when they're not.

This is good and correct use of positive reinforcement, which is how dogs should be trained. So, Kudos for that. However, dogs are curious by nature, and when I take my dog for a walk, it is HIS walk, so I do allow him a certain freedom to explore and smell the scents around him (could be other dogs, squirrels, cats, that have been in that area). Exploring around is a natural part of a dog's behavior IMO, so I do allow my dog to explore. I use treats as positive reinforcement when my dog sees another dog across the street and keeps walking. If I run into my neighbors when my dog is with me, I make it quick and let them know that the dog needs his walk.
@devlynjane7905 жыл бұрын
I do the same. I want my dog to explore smells and enjoy the walk. She normally walks very well on leash but sometimes she drags me after a smell so I am not sure how to train her to go to those things without dragging me
@MrMarvJones3 жыл бұрын
Since training a dog to pull on the leash can be dangerous if in a public place where they could get into harm, a lot of people will switch to a harness if they want to let their pet explore. A harness will feel different and encourage the dog to pull different directions to explore, while the leash pressure has a different feel that is a bit more strict. Just an idea!

Practice more in lower distraction areas until you've built more of a reinforcement history. Put distractions out (paper plate with low value food on it for example) and then correct him if he gets distracted by it. By doing this, you're teaching the concept at an easier level before hitting the streets with all the BIG distractions around. Small steps that the dog can be successful at.

if the dog is already used to you saying "leave it" then don't change what you say, for the benefit of the dog's understanding.... stay consistent... the fewer syllables used the better. one word is more than enough for any situation.

Thanks for this really great video. My question is are we meant to practice this until our puppy is properly trained before taking her for walks or can we take her for a walk now and practice this type of training every so often? She's 5 mths old and when we take her for a walk she still pulls, darts and tugs so much.

What kind of treats do you guys use for training? It's been hard with my boxer puppy because he doesn't like any of the treats I've gotten him so far...

Ik alot of people use just a normal hot dog chopped in tiny pieces since hot dogs r pretty cheap.

Do you have any suggestions for when my dog pulls while I'm in an electric wheelchair? He walks too far forward the minute I engage the controller. I stop and he moves back in position. But then when I only start to move forward, he's ahead of me again...pulling. I've tried not going in a straight line but adding turns, using a nose target to keep him in place and lots of food rewards for being in position. Nothing is changing. Thank you for any advice you can give me.

How much time do you spend doing this? And at what age do you start? 8 weeks? 10 weeks?

Hi there. My dog is pretty ok with loose leash but would lay down and wont move if she sees a person or a dog. She is fairly submissive and maybe unsure but is friendly. Treats and toys doesnt seem to work. Any tips?

I also have the same issue! Can you please answer! What usually helps (but not always) is to call the name of my dog with intonation that there is something very very interesting beside me. If she comes i revard her greatly and start to play. But well as I said sometimes this just dont work...

Can you do that little tug on the lead if they have a head collar on ? My dog is nearly 12 months old ? But he's a black Labrador and very excited 0 to 100 !!

Hi there, Tina! Using pulses on a 6’ leash is appropriate with a well-fit head collar. You will need to attach to your dogs neck collar if you start using a longer line/leash. Happy Training! ~Ken

Hi there, setnesk! The opposite is actually true! A lot of people think that the dog needs to make all of the correction early in the process, but after the process of testing and training nearly 100,000 dogs, the results show that the corrections give the dog definitive rules. Certainly the intent and mechanics need to be correct, but the dogs progress much more quickly without allowing the dog to simply move and “capture” the correct behavior. (which has been tested) When they’re shown exactly where the limitations are and the leash corrections are applied (correctly) they are misreading successful, more quickly! Happy Training! ~Ken

Hello, do you always use treats forever or as they get older would praise only be enough???
@McCannDogs5 жыл бұрын
Great question, Allan! Using food as a reward is great at the beginning, but it’s important that you’re working toward weaning off of the food. Here’s a video that will explain a little more: Here's How To Train With Treats So You Don't Need Them Forever kzbin.info/www/bejne/p33YpZ2hmpWsb7c Thanks for watching ~Ken

I train my dogs thru ,them an I being devoted and bonded to me, wanting to please me thru love, not food, when the training is over, will your dog still do their commands ,without rewards of treats??
@McCannDogs5 жыл бұрын
I love this comment, Tina! This is a pretty common misconception, and it’s directly linked to your timing! We focus on motivation and choice when we train dogs. Using food is an easily understood resource of value for all breeds and ages. But it needs to be used correctly! With poor timing in training there is no doubt that the dog will be confused about the expectations when you stop using food. I actually published a video about the importance of timing with food training. Can this training be done with a harness?
@SomeGuy-rc2lc4 жыл бұрын
Does this work if you use a harness rather than a leash? And would it work with an older dog? I've got a 3 year old terrier who wears a harness and pulls. Been working with him to stay close and it's only going ok.
