There is of course also the classic "Scher dich zum Teufel". In other languages his domain seems to be the preferred destination, not he personally ('Go to hell', 'Farðu til helvítis!'), which of course exists in German too ('Fahr zur Hölle' often abridged to simply 'zur Hölle (mit dir)'). Less an exhortation to initiate offwards movements and more of a wish this to be taken care of by others is the related 'daß dich der Teufel hole' (oh that the devil would take thee away). Quite obsolete by now 'Heb dich hinweg' (literally 'lift yourself off' but with the general vibe of 'get thee behind me').

While all of those expressions are correct, they are oldfashioned and would sound pathetic if uttered on any other occasion than in a stage play or LARP.
@Segalmed
@Segalmed 4 жыл бұрын
@@chrisrudolf9839 In my experience they are still used even by youngsters, although not always in a serious way and more often in the abridged form than not (or with an added 'doch'). It seems to me that some old-fashioned phrases have become fashionable again precisely because they sound odd today.

I had a chance to use these once. Teenagers were shouting at 3am on the street below my flat. I ignored it for about 15 minutes and then got out of bed, marched to the window, preparing all my angry German curse words (I work in kindergarten so I don't exactly get to use them much haha). I had just started with "haut ab!" and they all apologised and ran away so fast. I was almost disappointed

Say what you wish, but I shall never forget my grandfather, who came over from Germany prior to WW1, he turned to my uncle John (they were living on the "home" place) and told him to "throw the cows over the fence some hay!" I loved my grand father dearly but lost him to a heart attack when I was 7 years old, funny how the mind locks in on such small things, I can recall his smell, the pipe he had, made of painted ceramic and the way he would give us rides on his foot while saying "bumpty lumpty" he has been gone now for over 60 years, but I still miss him.

I have heard the phrase used by all those guys who make compilations of reddit posts and "censor" the swear words while reading as a replacement for f... off. Similar as "fricking" for f...ing. But yeah, other than in a situation where you want to censor yourself in a mocking way, I don't think people would actually say "screw off".

Thanks. I studied German and French briefly manny years ago. The articles added a level of complexity but I wondered what it feels like to have objects further categorized by gender. Does it make German speakers who learn English feel something is lost in the language? Thanks for the example. I thought there must be some humor in this idea.

My ears perked up at "Boah, diese Party ist so lahm!" Without checking your translation I understood that "this party is so lame!" Curious if like here in American English you could use "gelähmt" to describe something as "dull" or "boring" even when its literal meaning is slow or being unable to walk well.
@ChildOfLight13
@ChildOfLight13 4 жыл бұрын
No, we don't say that in Germany.
@chrisrudolf9839
@chrisrudolf9839 4 жыл бұрын
yes and no. We do use the word "lahm", which can mean slow, dull or weak and which originally also meant paralyzed (the word is oldfashioned and derogative and thus should not and usually is not used for someone who is actually paralyzed anymore). Contrary to that "gelähmt" only means paralyzed (both literally and figuratively like in paralyzed by fear).

You have der, die, das in German In English we have only the neutral “the”. Does that affect the way you think of objects? since French has le and la, are objects similarity gendered? Does German comedy use der,die,das for comic effect? That is an area we English speakers do not understand.

Rarely. Mostly to express the confusion of german-learning englishspeaker: "Nie werde ich die deutsche Sprache lernen. Heute habe ich jemanden gehört, wie er alle drei Artikel vor einem einzigen Wort benutzt hat. Er hat gesagt: 'Dass di der Deibel hol.'" - That plays with a german dialect. "I will never learn the german language. Today I heard somebody using all three articles in front of one word. He has said: 'Dass di der Deibel hol.'" - "Dass di der Deibel hol." is an dialectic expression to curse somebody. The three words "Dass di der ..." sound equally than "das die der". "di" is a short form of "dich". "Der Deibel" is "der Teufel" ("the devil").

Hi Trixi, I wanted to state a flaw (in my opinion) is in all of your videos, but please take it as constructive criticisim! I think the most useful chunks of your content are the small actings in German, but you accelerate a lot your speech and it's very difficult to follow for a learner (which I guess it's 98% of the audience). I think they would be far more useful if you gave them us a few more seconds to grasp it!
