In the case of 'to dust' and 'the dust' we're talking about homophones, that is words that sound alike. 'UMfahren' and 'umFAHREN' are NOT homophones (remember the shifted stress!). But it's true that they're homographs, that is words that are spelled alike.

Funny coincidence the German word "abstauben" also belongs among them. It can mean to dust something (only in the sense of cleaning it, not in the sense of making it dirty) but it can also mean to get something for cheap or to get yourself a prize or a free benefit in a sly way.

The reason for the "sanction" thing is, as far as I know, that originally it was (in both verb and noun form) a neutral term that could apply to both positive or negative things, and apparently over time as a verb it started to get predominately used for positively sanctioning something, so that after a while adding "positively" became redundant so it was dropped, and the same thing for the noun, over time it was used most often to mean negative sanctions, and after a while saying "negative" became redundant and was dropped.

English has lots of these, usually without the help of being pronounced differently. Peruse -- To skim through for the major points. Peruse -- To read carefully to ensure complete understanding. Inflamable -- The quality of something which can easily catch fire, frequently without any fire being present. Inflamable -- The quality of not being able to burn at all, even when exposed to flame. Oversight -- Something one forgot to examine, usually when a problem arises. Oversight -- careful supervision of something The pronunciation is identical in all cases. There are other examples. I think because in English we used to have lots of cases and complex word forms and we simplified everything putting a little more pressure on word order and context, the language is rife with oddities, especially if you go back to earlier modern English like Shakespeare spoke. An interesting example is "set" which has about 70 definitions in the OED, some of which are contronyms. And we have verbs like lay and lie where the conjugation of one includes all the forms of the other.

There are many such words in languages and it depends upon where the stress is placed or intonation. I never really thought that much about it, as it just seemed so natural as the words are spoken with an inflection that determines the meaning. I could see though when one speaks a dialectal form of a language where this can cause misunderstandings. More confusion though is with cognates, especially between the German and the English Languages. Add to that, the really bad habit of Germans using the two languages together in a sentence!

There are very few spelled-alikes but pronounced differently. (Lots of spelled differently, but pronounced the same.) wound = an injury; or "you wound up in jail", or "you wound the clock" wind = air that is moving; or "you will wind up in jail", or "you wind the clock" close = near; or "close the door" live = like "live TV"; or "a better way to live" There are some that have different emphasis, although the meanings are related. produce = (PRO-duce) fruit and vegetables; (pro-DUCE) to create or show conduct = (CON-duct) how you behave (a noun); (con-DUCT) as in "conduct yourself properly" (a verb)

In English, cleave means 'to hold together' and 'to split apart.' I think that's weirder than umfahren. I can't avoid awkwardness no matter what I do. I thought I was going to show everyone at the party how well I could learn German by using what I thought was common sense to mean 'bring you all around (to an understanding)' and I used the word 'umbringen' to do it. "Ich bringen euch um" I said, without knowing the meaning and alarming the hell out of Gustav, who told them I don't know what I'm saying. I had no idea why he was so alarmed. I still can't understand why umbringen doesn't mean 'bring around' but I'll never say it again.

Don't start with that. There are even words you can't differentiate by looking if they sound different or are interchangegable. Some are exactly the same and you need context to understand. Haare wachsen lassen (grow hair)=/= Haare wachsen lassen (wax hair). The "Haare" is pronounced louder and more prominent when it means "grow" and the and the "wachsen" is more pronounced when it means "to wax". But it's a faint difference and ultimately both words are the same. German is so difficult. But if you cocentrate on the basics it's not that bad and it's everything you need to know at first. Don't frustrate yourself too early. Most germans will always make clear what is meant and don't use these difficult wordplays. They will use them in a way you can't interprete them wrong or simply use other words becouse they get confused, too. I know that, I'm german, so don't worry.💜 Keep going👍

Die Bedeutung des Wortes "Chef" ist auch verwirrend, wenn man ins Englische übersetzen will. Chef auf Deutsch ist ja ein Synonym für Boss, während es im Englischen "Koch" entspricht. Hab ewig gebraucht um das zu verstehen. Frage mich, wieviele Leute sich wohl gefragt haben, was ich da für einen Müll erzähle, wenn ich aif englisch von der Arbeit spreche und "Chef" anstelle von "Boss" sage

Lustigerweise klappt die Sache mit dem Trennen bei umfahren auch andersrum: Lass uns um die Laterne fahren. Lass uns die Laterne umfahren. Zweiteres kann zwar je nach Betonung immer noch beides heißen, aber die Laterne umzunieten kann man so nicht getrennt vorschlagen.

Das wusste ich bereits über das Wort "Umfahren". Gustav sagte mir und glaub es oder nicht, er ist nicht dumm. Die Leute sind ständig unhöflich zu ihm. Es geht mir auf die Nerven. Er hatte genau Recht mit dem, was er mir sagte. Menschen mit übertriebener Bildung schauen ihm in die Nase. Er ist wahrscheinlich der netteste Mann auf dem Planeten und nett zählt für etwas. Im letzten Video hast du gesagt, dass du es vermisst, Deutsch zu sprechen. Dieser Kommentar ist mein Bestreben, dies zu tun. Ich brauche sowieso Übung. Ich hoffe, es ist kein schlechter Versuch.
