I think what you have to remember is that a watch is a mechanical object that occasional needs servicing, the same as a car. You wouldn’t drive a car with dents in so what a watch? I see no issue with polishing or laser welding as long as it’s done well.

Hi Austin. Thanks, a really useful video for those not used to spotting the wear and unevenness created during a polishing. Its also useful to see the evenness of the depth of the external spring bar holes. These can also show how much of the metal has been removed.always assuming you have the correct spring bars.👍
@philw4053
@philw4053 Жыл бұрын
That can be misleading though as springbars are not machined to the same tolerances as the case. Sure if your springbar ends are standing proud of the case that's a strong indication. But small variations side to side can be expected.

Great video Austin! With current model Rolexes going for sky high prices, I believe demand for these 5-digit pieces are going to rise as they’re still “affordable”. I once had a dealer tell me that a Kermit wasn’t polished yet I couldn’t find any chamfers on any lugs. People need to be educated about what they’re spending their precious dollars on and not be hoodwinked by irresponsible dealers. Having said all that, it’s near impossible to find an unpolished piece and I decided to pull the trigger on a Swiss Only 16610 even though it had gone through RSC and obviously polished. The consolation is that they did a good job maintaining most of the case intact. You’re really lucky to find that 16600, as soon as Japan allows tourists again, I’d love to go Rolex-hunting with you. 👍
@watchsymposium
@watchsymposium 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Chris - let me know, and we'll hit the shops. The 16610 has really shot up recently. I found one a few months ago with a Swiss only dial, full set, and two service cards from RSC. I'm not so bothered by RSC polishes because they do such a good job, and was keeping track of this piece...well, it was snapped up less than 4 or 5 days later. It was less than 1 million Yen, and since then they've gone up by 2-3 grand USD - and that's for the cheapest one, no box and papers!

Austin Congrats on your new watch it is very cool pre-supper case Rolex .one non Rolex I learned this that I am sure you already know. Is that on the Tudor tiger Hydronaut’s with a white dial have there hands painted black like a white dial Explorer 2 they did not paint the lume marks black which is interesting but they did the hands. I purchased one of the white dial Hydronaut’s this week full set even had the hang tag with the original price. It is not a GMT like my Explorer 2 the hands and dial did remind me of my Explorer. Just thought it was cool. Again congratulations on your new watch and keep up the great work as always.

Thanks William, and congratulations on your new watch too. I check the Hydronauts here often - they're by far my favorite Tudor. White dial watches with black painted hands is a really nice aesthetic!

Its silly to ask if it was polished. Steel watches especially pre own will be 99% polished to retain its good looks. Whats more important is that the design profile is maintained. The moment someone asks me if my watch is polished, i know immediately he is a noob. You made all the right points on this issue of polishing. The thickness and symmetry of the case and lugs are the most important aspects, polished or not.

Hi Austin this is a nice condition 16600. I think it was unpolished at first sight but I can tell you it has been polished but very well done. If you look at the polished edges of the wat you can see the surfaces are not completely sharp and flat. An unpolished watch would have these surfaces sharp and flat.

An RSC or quality polish is fine and what you want for your watch to look great, but an unskilled or overly polished piece really stands out in a bad way. Who cares?? is this a new thing?? Just for reference, The "paul newman REF6263" they just sold for $5.5million was completely restored. They only left a few character marks to give us something to look at. One of my racing partners sat on the Lime Rock hill with paul about 25 years ago and saw his 6263 and it was a disaster. Huge nicks, dents, scuffs and scrapes. Sotheby's still managed to sell it after a polishing. (and BTW, they can add metal back as needed, so lugs can be brought back better than new)
@watchsymposium
@watchsymposium 2 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure if it's a new thing. But it took me awhile to start thinking about it, as it's not something I even considered when I got into preowned watches. It's the idea of wanting a piece as close to how it left the factory as possible. It's one dynamic (among many) when you are looking a particular piece, so it's better to know about it than not. As for laser welding, it's an option if you're OK with it, but many purists aren't into it.
@johnm5131

@@watchsymposium Agreed. Your point is very valid. The only caveat is that any watch can be made to appear at any level of originality that the seller intends. Which makes much of this moot.

I wish someone had explained to me the desirability of unpolished pieces when I first got into watches!
