How to tell if someone is a pathological liar? Watch this video for all the signs and tells!
Is someone lying to you? A lack of detail may give them away www.newscientist.com/article/...
There are nine types of lies:
1. Utilitarian: a lie that is intended to accomplish something, a lie that is goal-oriented, a lie whose structure and content are planned to promote or inspire changes conducive to the furtherance of the liar’s aims and aspirations;
2. Smokescreen: a lie whose purpose is to obscure, conceal, or remove true information and thus mislead others (common in espionage or military operations) or to avoid facing a humiliating or shameful truth;
3. Compassionate: a lie that is geared towards sparing other people’s feelings, catering to their sensitivities and vulnerabilities, and allowing them to save face and avoid shame and embarrassment. Most white lies are compassionate and empathic;
4. Ceremonial: lies and dissimulations whose function is to establish a pecking order by demonstrating reverence and glossing over facts and behaviors that inconveniently contravene the accepted hierarchy. Manners and etiquette are highly-elaborate forms of ceremonial lying;
5. Compensatory: lies that are used to disguise the oft-humiliating fact that we do not know the truth or can’t remember it. Lies of this type amount to fiction, but with most of the interlocutors being unaware of it;
6. Confabulatory: intricate lies that weave a fabric of alternate reality which is frequently an exaggerated form of the liar’s traits, conduct, and personal history (though it can, of course, be completely unrelated to anything real in the confabulator’s life);
7. Inferential: fallacious conclusions or extrapolations based on true assumptions or statements. Most logical fallacies are inferential lies;
8. Hybrid: lies that contain markers of an occult truth or pathways to true information, allowing its recipients to “read between the lines”. Hybrid lies are common in authoritarian and totalitarian regimes;
9. Fantastic: wishes and dreams dressed up as facts.

The worst and most dangerous liar is the one who lies when there is no need to lie. It is a symptom of someone who fabricates their reality instead of living in actual reality.

Peter Pan merciful narcissistic who has little other personality disorder who is a smart strategic thinker very clever who can look you straight in the eyes ans lie for at least three years before making cover-up mistakes. I live with this everyday. DO NOT SPEAK TO THEM. Be polite but you cannot have a relationship with them. The key to maintaining a living in condition with them is accepting without criticism who they are. It's not personal if you see through it all and can differentiate. God forgive them for they know exactly what they do to others but not to themselves.

Growing up I lied because I had one parent place extremely impossible demands on me as a child. To get out of listening to his 3 hour tirade, I would lie about having a homework assignment. To have a few moments of social time with friends, I would lie about going to their house to study because doing normal kid things like attending a football game or movie with a friend was almost always met with resistance and a firm no. Sometimes lying is a survival mechanism. Unfortunately, lying became very easy for me to do. After getting away from my abusive parent, i have come to value honesty above almost anything else. I don’t lie anymore, but I maintain firm boundaries with anyone that seems to want to control something about me and I remind myself I don’t have to explain anything to most people. If you want your children to be honest with you try to be reasonable and not overly critical. Let them be who they are and embrace that with them.

Another way to keep your child from lying is by not asking them if they have/haven’t done something. Instead, point out evidence that you see and ask them for clarification. For example, I see your toothbrush is dry…

I grew up in a similar situation. Lying was all my parents did (I didn't know what narcissism was back then) so I did it too as a way to counter the nonsensical stuff they would come up with. I knew it was wrong but when telling the truth all it did was make them come down harder on me for more made-up stuff that was not real. Lesser of two evils sort of survival tactic in a way.

This is so true. It’s funny how they validate the lies by telling the truth shortly after the lies. It’s as if it redeems them. I pay very close attention to details, eye contact and body language, not to mention that I am a highly sensitive empath. I have the ability to somehow get the truth out of a lot of people eventually by simply not judging them. If they feel like you won’t judge them or like you mentioned, lying to benefit their needs, they feel no reason to lie. I have also noticed of course that most narcissists are the biggest liars ever. They lie so much I think they manage to interweave the lies so intricately with the truth, they begin to believe their own little fibs. Oh and yes this is a very compulsive tendency.

The differentiation of a social liar and a pathological liar is the harm they cause. For me, it doesn't matter if some guy at a cocktail party lies about the size of the fish he caught on vacation. Whatever makes you feel better, man. But then, there are those who use lies as venom to poison their subjects into submission. Those are the harmful ones, friend. Woe unto you who fall under their spell.

My Husband lied so much I felt insane. He kept telling me his family didn't hate me, even though I had never made that accusation. In the end I did, it wore me down so much, but there was distinct times where "My parents said they dont hate you" that really messed with me. He'd also tell me the truth in the middle of arguments to blindside me and throw me off the original argument. His biggest lie was 8 months of therapy and a therapist who never existed. This included fake phone calls if I was home. He said he was a pathological liar and that he lied from anxiety. He also wouldn't lie with a lot of details, so it often sounded like the truth. It's not always too many details.

My boss lies so much that he lies about things that he doesn’t even need to lie about. He lies to cover his lies, and then he cannot remember all of his lies, so he lies some more. He lies right to my face without blinking an eye. Sometimes, if I already know the truth about something, I will test him to see if he will tell me the truth. Most of the time he will lie to me, and if I call him out on the lie, then he will lie again to try to confuse me. Or he will launch into some exaggerated fantastical story to distract me. I’m exhausted by him.

I worked for a guy that seemed to purposely misunderstand people when whatever they were saying was inconvenient or to use against someone later. For instance if I said, "Our staff will need training before attempting this task," he would report this to our upper management as " Shana said she is not going to do this task." Of course, I would get chewed out and when I explained what I ACTUALLY said, upper management would tell me that I wasn't communicating effectively if I have to explain what I meant. I wouldnt have to explain if he weren't misrepresenting me! Over the course of about 3 months, I asked innocuous questions like "Where is a particular file saved?" or "Will we test multiple lots or only one?" and the questions were answered. Nothing seemed amiss. Then, suddenly, I hauled into HR to be written up for "Not knowing important info about our work." I asked how am I supposed to know these things without asking? He said, "You just have to know." This dude was a piece of work. I really wanted to like him, but he was just an illogical, liar who screwed up frequently and blamed it on the people beneath him.

I have been destroyed too many times by false witness liars to even respect any form of lying. However, I can forgive anyone for telling 'a little white lie' to protect someone's feelings. I'd still rather hear the truth. If I ask a friend how my hair looks, and she says, "Oh it's fine!" and it looks more like a witches mop... I could go out and make a complete fool of myself, right? 😂 In all seriousness though, some lie simply tear a person down. I've had art classes in college, and the instructor would compliment them no matter what. He came to my graphic which I was not happy with, and I requested the truth. He said, "Are you sure? Can you handle the criticism?" I said, "As long as it's constructive criticism, I want to hear what will make my artwork better." He smiled and told me the truth. It's not always easy to hear the truth, but sometimes it will make us better.

When you surrender to the truth you align with reality and why wouldn't you want that? I have a deepened understanding of the phrase "the truth will set you free" after watching somebody's web of lies fall apart. All the lies put you into a corner and you can't get out. It's imprisoning. You are constantly on the run from the truth. If you are wise enough to speak truthfully you are not afraid of being exposed. However, yes, at some points lies are ok, but generally you shouldn't lie.

I have known several people who were compulsive liars. Some would brag about wealth, position in society, academic degrees, the high awards (such as a VC or Congressional Medal of Honour) or heroism, while others would tell stories about other people, both positive and negative. If you want to meet these people, stay in a rooming house or hang out at a bar. What I noticed was that although they never had long term friends, they were always the center of attention. People wanted to be around them, they got dates, people lent them small amounts of money. But they never crossed the line into offences that could get them arrested. I think that their lying was behaviour learned in order to cope with childhood. Their phantasy self made them feel better about themselves and helped their popularity around other children.

Also, it’s a generalization. As for your comment about me, I see that you’re obviously very damaged from something that someone did to you. That person was not me. So, don’t try to take it out on me. I think its a big problem that most people are taught to accept lies at a very crucial time of development. If someone finds what others do acceptable then they are likely to do the same. Examples of the early lies that are accepted are santa Claus, Easter bunny and the tooth fairy, this is dangerous because its a case where believing and promoting the lie is profitable!!

Thank you so much prof. Vaknin for your work and informative videos. The sound quality is very good now. Hope you get your other furnitures very soon. I get a little confused, i remember you mentioned on your videos that boarderlines are very manipulative, on the other hand, on another video you mentioned, boarderlines are very easy to manipulate. Could you please explain how someone who’s very manipulative can be also very easy to manipulate? Thank you so much.

I just don’t believe anything anyone says ever. I get by on context clues, body language, tone of voice, and what history I know of them. It’s not that I think they’re being malicious, it’s that I don’t care what they’re doing (making mouth noises lol) unless it requires some action on my part. I think it’s from truely hating what I call high-jacking my brain, where everything a person says is like a picture in my brain and if they mess up saying something while they have my attention… I feel incredibly angry but I don’t act on it. Not physically anyway.

I used to work as a mentor with a student who had social Anxiety diagnosis. Towards the end she opened a lot about personal and family life. Everything she said was self-contradictory. I was so exhausted and doubted the story as nothing made sense and yet I wanted to emphatise with her. She is a compulsive liar and everytime excuses herself it's because she is anxious!

I’m getting away from a friend who is a pathological liar. She and her church friends coached her daughter to lie in a job interview. She’s lied about being ill and that she got tested about it. She got a bunch of people sick over it. I’ve been hanging with her for four years one day a week to make art. I originally thought she would be my bestie and sad about that but I’m over it now. Of course I know she’s lied to me too but they are so random I can’t tell what is a lie and what isn’t so I now don’t believe anything she’s ever said. She doesn’t know it yet but she’s banned from my house.

I think compulsive liars can tell fact from fiction. I was speaking to one about a certain island. Realizing I was sceptical of his stories, he said he really had been there, then told me some things that one would only know if one had been there. We got into a discussion where it was quite clear he was telling the truth.

These type of people (narcs, liars) tend to avoid me. I think its because i dont care about attention or likeability, so i do nothing for those types of people. Im not easily impressed and they dont care to impress me because they know they arent gonna get anything. Which os absolutely fine lol, i rather have one or two real people in my life than crazies.

Every human has told lies! If someone asks if their jeans make their butt look big and you say NO( BUT they actually do... you're lying to protect them).. We have all done this a time or two. But liars lie just to be lying! I'm seeing quite a bit of this in my realms. Ppl that want to keep you around by lying to prevent you from making diff choices that would not serve them. Another type of liar I hate is adult kids that lie to get all the money in the Will to prevent the others from getting any then when confronted w this behavior.. they begin to paint you as bad to minimize their scam! Another type of liar is Scott Peterson.. lying about killing his wife/ son to recruit new ppl to his worthless cause😂

I know someone from high school who every single time he lies like literally every single time. He went to Cadets like Boy Scout, and since then, he thinks he's in the army. Every post is something like that he really thinks he's a veteran and is funny but kinda sad. I remember trying to confirm if he was always liying, and one time, I told him if he watched the new Cod Mw3 ( the OG ) with zombies, and he immediately said, " Yeah, i already played it" I died

I invested to find the truth and as such have the hard core evidence in hand and she still denies she is loving another man then she is pure wicked evil. Assumptions are one thing but hard core irrefutable visual evidence is a slam dunk against her and her character! Her deceit and deviousness are extremely painful to endure and I did walk away because her bold faced pathological lies when I have all the direct proof render her unworthy of my attention, my energy, my support and my love. She only wanted my money while making plans with the other guy behind my back while plotting and misleading me until I gathered all the real world evidence. So she said it is a bad trait to be insecure to which I replied it’s a bad trait for her to be a major league liar. The one attribute all women possess is their innate ability to look deeply into your eyes and fully intentionally lie/deceive you. Yea I acknowledge We all lie but this pathological liar weaves her course against me to harm me. I had to test the veracity of her stories. Many men are aware of the devious nature of a woman but we tend to blindly believe women’s lies because many men Dont want to face tue truth that the woman we love does not reciprocate love and desire. Men love in a very deep way. Women love only what they can get out of a man. She doesn’t care I’m gone because she wants him anyway so I’m nothing at all to her. She is cold hearted and ungodly.

When you get punished every time you speak the truth, you learn to lie to just have peace of mind. Not everyone deserves my truth. If I don't care about you, I'll tell you I lived in Dubai for 3 years that's why there is a hole in my CV instead of telling you that I was in an unemployed depressed period of my life where I wanted to unalive myself. Liars can’t have real connections with people unless the second person is unaware of their lies and believes them to be a truth teller or atleast not being a compulsive liar. And if the second person know about his/her lies then they can’t connect with them either. So it is both ways. Liars can’t connect to people and people can’t connect to liars either.

We have a family member who takes benign stories and exaggerates them to a ridiculous extent. A bumpy landing becomes a plane doing a 360 spin on the runway. A ring being tight becomes a hospital visit bolt cutters and a finger almost lost. A brief conflict over a parking space becomes hurling a poo at a man's face. We have no idea how to deal so just grey rock and don't react, but it doesn't stop. How do you manage this in someone you cannot cut off? It's hilarious but also frustrating and boring.
