A lot of learners tend to overestimate their level. I've talked to a lot of experts and polyglots in the language learning field, and all these people agree that students shouldn't be saying that they are at certain level when they haven't finished that whole level and tested out of it yet.

I am an online German teacher myself, and from experience with my students I can say, that even if you have accomplished any language certificates/Tests this does not really say a lot of your actual skills. I am often wondered when people tell me they just achieved the B2 level while this student has a much harder time to express himself than a student who might just successfully accomplished a B1 level and vice versa when people seem to have much higher capabilities than the certificate they own. I know there are basically 4 skills you need to prove on this test (so a good writer/reader might not be as good in oral speech) however I do think all this language level certificates might have differences depending where you make them (country etc.). However, I am not a big fan of it at all, at the end it just says that on this specific day X you were able to reproduce the needed skills for a certain level for this test.

This is a two-sided coin, though: if you can converse at A1 and describe yourself as such, it get's difficult to find conversation partners because there's a perception, right or wrong, that a A1 level student is basically unable to construct even basic sentences. That's why I self describe as A2 in German: I'm able to engage in basic conversation, and understand and be understood.

Basically, lol, I have a C2 in Spanish and English, but seems I am A1 in both now.

This is so right! One thing I'm finding really frustrating right now is the fact that the level varies so wildly in my 'Upper Intermediate' Chinese class. Some people speak really well and some people can hardly string a sentence together.

That's a feature of all language classes, I think. There was a student in my college Spanish program who didn't understand the concept of verb conjugation... in her senior year.

谢谢。thanks for sharing. This is an example of the Kruger effect, but I think the same as another user in the comment section in this video, there are people good at passing test but that doesn't mean they are proficient in the language.

So basically you're saying I cannot claim I am a C2 in English when I've been using the language with ease for almost a decade just because I haven't finished any course or received any official certification? Even though I can understand all kinds of content and even take online courses from Harvard?
