How to tell if your stamp collection is worth anything?

I've tried listing on eBay, each stamp and realized that it's very difficult to price and valuate your stamp collection unless you've really spent a lot of time learning all the variables. My advice on how to answer the question "Are my stamps worth anything?" Take it to a stamp collector who know's his stuff. That really is the best way, but that being said it does take some time and they may charge a fee, or charge a fee and then offer to purchase your collection and absorb the fee.

If you have a large collection it will probably cost you more to have it appraised than what it is worth. 99.9% of all stamps are worth less than $1. Your best bet is take your collection to three different dealers. Ask if they are interested in buying. Don't take any offers. Instead take a lot of close up photos of your collection and put them on eBay and list your collection with a starting bid of half the lowest offer and have a reserve of twice the highest offer. If none make you an offer your collection is worth probably less than 25 cents per stamp. In that case do the same, take a lot of close up photos and put it on eBay listing the starting bid equal to 5 cents per stamp and have a reserve of 25 cents per stamp. If the dealers start picking out stamps to make an offer on them, let them but don't accept the offer no matter what. Instead, set those stamps aside and take them to the library and look for a Scott catalog but beware, value is based on the condition and grade of the stamp and those two things are not the same. Don't assume that your stamp is worth $1000 if that is what the Scott catalog says. If your stamp has ever been hinged that brings down the value of mint stamps. If it is less than perfectly centered or has a crease or scuffing that brings down the value. Dealers will almost always offer less than what they think they can sell a stamp for. So your stamp is always worth at least double the dealer's offer. But stamps are almost always worth less than the Scott catalog says they are. Be leery of any valuation under fifty cents in the Scott catalog. I believe Scott now values all stamps at a minimum of 25 cents despite dealers often selling those stamps for far less sometimes with a couple of zeros taken off. I have bought stamps by the pound from dealers where they came out to less than 1/10 of a cent each. That brings me to another aspect. You will almost always get far less if you sell your stamps as one collection rather than in smaller lots or single stamps. There is no point selling stamps individually for 25 cents each but if you have 10,000 stamps you will do better if you sell the higher value stamps, say the ones over $1, as individual stamp lots and the ones under $1 in groups of say up to about 100 or so. The best way to sell lots is as sets of all different stamps from the same country. Most people do collect by the country. A bad idea is to sell a $40 stamp as part of a collection of otherwise 1000 25 cent stamps. A collector who would be willing to pay $40 for a single stamp won't want to pay another $25 for stamps he will consider worthless to him. So you will get more if you keep them separate in your listings. If you have a collection with a total value under $100 it's almost not worth trying to sell unless you are desperate for cash. My advice would be to give it away to a young family member who expresses an interest. Also, while highly collectible stamps do usually continuously go up in value, temporary slumps in the market not withstanding, low end stamps rarely increase in value much more than the inflation rate so if you are looking at them as an investment, that will be a waste of time. Also most modern commemoratives and souvenir sheets are mass produced at such a rate that they rarely become valuable. The ones to look out for are things like errors and the occasional rarity. Sometimes the post office uses an incorrect design and stops printing and even recalls a particular stamp and so a smaller number made it to the market. Those will become desirable collectibles. If you are thinking about collecting as an investment I don't recommend it in general unless you train yourself to become an expert. Post offices around the world are producing more stamps now than ever and most are produced almost entirely to be marketed to collectors. There are less collectors today than there were ten years ago and all the fewer than there were 25 years ago. The peak for collectors was probably in the 1970's and 1980's. This is largely due to the fact that fewer kids become interested because they see less stamps on mail than they used to. When I was a kid 50 years ago the average household received 7 pieces of mail a day and 6 had stamps on them. Today the average household gets about 3 pieces of mail a day and only about one or two a week get stamps on them. 75% of first graders don't know what a postage stamp is. The average age a person developed an interest in stamp collecting 50 years ago was 9. Today the average age for a beginner stamp collector is around 13. So the bottom line is that while I certainly recommend stamp collecting as a hobby, I don't recommend it as an investment strategy unless it is your intent to become a dealer. If so I recommend going to your public library and ask for a copy of Linn's Stamp News. And the Scott Catalogs. Those are your two best sources of information about stamps.

I collect since 1972 (8 years old). I go to a stamp collector to buy my catalogs, and ask him questions, but I try to do my homework myself. After all, , after 43 years of doing this, just out of passion, 1) my stamp shop tells me: you can do it yourself, and 2) it is a passion, so I do it myself, and I sell by myself.. I've been collecting stamps off and on since i was twelve years old. My hobby may go dormant for years at a time, but it always seems to come back to life periodically, and for various reasons. I am now 65. I've learned over the years that my collection probably will never be worth anything monetarily, but it is fun collecting them! I realized too that I will never be able to collect everything and can't even afford everything the US puts out any more. Internationally, I collect two topics: Olympic games and Space Exploration. I design and create my own pages. I buy mint, never hinged, stamps both online and at stamp shows. Every once in a while I find a beautiful or interesting first day cover or maxicard that I add to my collection. But my motive is not the ultimate resale value, but the fun of collecting! I research a lot on line now about the sports or athletes and include the stories on my pages. This year I learned there was such a thing as Paralympics! I am astounded and now hunt for Paralympic commemorative stamps. I'm afraid always making stamp collecting about the ultimate resale value of a collection ruins the whole concept of the hobby! I am now trying to interest my 7 year old grandson in stamp collecting and find that the time I get to spend with him doing this is priceless! He isn't doing anything at home by himself yet. When I asked him "Why?" he said, "Opa, this is something I want to do together with you." That is way more valuable than any amount of money a collection could ever bring!

John, I am 75 years old and have been collecting stamps off and on most of my life. My children have no interest in stamps. (Other than for postage) I sent my entire collection to Bill Norberg, Golden Valley Stamps. I have worked with him for a number of years and bought most of my stamps through him. I sent all of my stamps to him (It took two boxes. Imagine two boxes the size of shirts you might buy.) and it will provide me will added, non taxable, money for several years. I am getting $1000.00 monthly. This helps me as all I get is social security and a small retirement from SYSCO.

You are correct when voicing the opinion that the value of a stamp may depend on a multitude of factors. That very valuable Franklin stamp you mentioned has many variations. The rarest one is the most expensive US stamp and it must have a Z grill. Only, one of these Z grill stamps has survived till today, as far as the philatelic community knows.

Firstly, Its not as difficult as you might think. But you need to get the right equipment. You need a pair of stamp tongs, a perf guage, a recent Scott catalog (from the city library), a stamp lifter box, and several empty stock books. Separate the loose mixture into piles of stamps by country, if there is sheets of stamps and stamp covers set them aside. Most of the stamps you have will have catalog values of less then $1,00. Put them in the stock book or books (you may thousands of these). Those valued from $1.00 to $5.00 place in another stock book with a notation as to the value next to the stamp and those stamps valued over $5.00 in a third stock book with the notation next to the stamp. Be sure and get and use the perf gauge as some issues(mostly old ones)have various varieties. Identification of the correct value is essential, so learn to check Scott for possible alternate cat numbers. If the stamps are part of a set of stamps and the set is complete and on ly if it is complete put it in the $5,00 and up stock book with a notation as to its value. Be sure to know the difference between mint(no cancel ) and used(cancelled).Go through the stamp albums removing the stamps (be sure to do this slowly and carefully). Use the stamp lifter if they are stuck.If the stamp has minor damage, still put it in the stock book. Serverly torn stamps can be discarded. After this is all done you can get a good estimate of the value range.Count the stamps in the cheap stock book. They are valued from 2 to 5 cents each. The other 2 books Mint range 30 to 50% cat and the used from 10% to 20% cat. Common US mint at face and face plus 1 cent This includes all plate block from 1940 to the present. Old plate blocks from 40 to 50% of cat as they will have a premium. The covers are going to be hard to identify as to value. On the covers you should call in an expert if they are older than 1940, But common first day covers go from 25 cents to 75cents each. Next, total up the ranges (high and low). This will give you a good idea of what the collection is worth.Secondly, If you have done this process completely, you can take the cheap stuff and sell them easily at your local stamp club(need to join) at the low values. The high value stuff can be sold online. Or, you can take the books to a dealer and see what he is willing to pay. Do not expect to get the high range value. It sounds like a lot but if you run into difficulty a friend from the local club may help at no charge presumably.

Common stamps are not worthless. What they mean is that they are not worth a lot. Common stamps can actually find a buyer. You can get them by the hundreds in packs at 25 cents a hundred. They then can be made into stamp art. So don't say worthless. Since worthless implies having no monetary value whatsoever.

I would agree with some of this, but always get at least 2 opinions. I have valued many collections and some owners have commented that another person valued it much lower than I did. This may be because I have more knowledge and could spot rarities, but it could be that the other person was trying to buy them cheaply. I NEVER offer to buy a collection I value.

An 1847 Franklin is worth quite a bit more than $5. His explanation of what I took to be souvenir sheets is wrong as well. Stamps have always been printed in sheets. That's how they arrived at the post office. Souvenir sheets are a completely different matter. To really educate yourself about stamps and their values, take a look at the Scott Catalogue, usually available at your local library.

It is easy to get a feel if your stamp collection of any worth. As a stamp dealer goes thru your collection, watch him turn those album pages. If he turns the pages like a used Playboy magazine, then your collection is of little monetary value. And finally, should you get an offer to buy your collection (in part or in its entirety), then you know that you do have something in the collection of value, and it would be a very small fraction of the true value.

This a how a stamp is categorised (In Australia anyway). 1. Mint Unhinged 2. Commercially used (on a letter or parcel) 3. C.T.O. Cancelled to Order. Cancelled at the post office by a teller for a customer. a C.T.O. can be stamped on or off a cover. All modern FDCs (First day Covers) are C.T.O. The value can be equal to a commercial or lower. With scarce and rare stamps it is of lesser value to commercially used versions. For instance the 1932 Australian 5/- (5 shilling) Harbour Bridge (2015 prices) is as listed 1. Mint unhinged (well centred) AUS$1,600 2. Commercially used (well centred) AU$450 3. C.T.O. (well centred) AU$275 And another Australian set, this time a complete set of extremely rare 1st watermark Kangaroo inside map of Australia. 1. Mint unhinged AU$30,000 2. C.T.O. AU$9,000 A loss of AU$21,000 In my opinion when it comes to modern stamps avoid the C.T.O. stamps like the plague, unlike the pre-decimal Kangaroo and map stamps (even C.T.O. sets are worth 1000s), the modern versions, once stamped as a C.T.O. is worthless, and a majority of stamp dealers will not buy FDCs even if they are 70 years old unless there is an exceptionable one, and that alone is like finding a chicken with teeth.

You are right to suggest that people should get an expert opinion from someone they trust. Until you get your stamps to that person: 1. Don't touch them with your fingers. The oils in your skin can harm the stamps. Fingerprints left on the gum can greatly reduce the value of the stamp. 2. Don't pull the stamps out of the album and don't remove hinges unless you know what you are doing. It can tear the stamp and make a valuable stamp worth a tiny fraction of its value. 3. Don't use tweezers from your bathroom which can leave permanent impressions or scratches. Use stamp tongs. 4. Don't cut stamps off old envelopes. Sometimes having the stamp on an envelope can enhance the value of the stamp.

Here is a tip how you would know whether your stamp collection is worth anything. Watch how a stamp dealer handle your collection. A stamp dealer would instinctively know whether your collection is valuable, and he would handle with care not to damage any stamps of value should he buys it from you. If anything of value, he would ask what are you asking for your collection, or he would offer you a low figure. Should he turn the album pages as though it is a used Playboy magazine, then you know that you have a collection of little or no value. .

You basically have two choices, pay to have it appraised and expect to pay more for the apraisel than most of the stamps are worth or educate yourself and determine the value yourself. The first step is find a good price guide and the best are Scott for the U.S. and Stanley Gibbon for the U.K. Either is good for all the other countries. Any that are in a wax envelope with labels leave them there for now as that will save you from trying to figure out what they are. A full set of Scott catalogs are worth more than most people's stamp collection. One volume from the set ten years out of date can run you $40. go to the library and ask for a Scott catalog. Most will have it. A full set is tens of thousands of pages long and will require a lot of reading. However, for most countries there are a limited number of high value stamps and what you are looking to do is find out if any of yours is in that category. After reading up on a few countries you'll get the hang of it and should figure the whole collection's value in a few years. That said, if they are in albums a good gage is to look at the first few pages of each country. if the first few pages of each country are basically blank then there probably isn't a lot of value in the collection. I can go on line and buy a pile of 10,000 stamps for $50 and half of them will be over 50 years old and 5% or more will be over 100 years old and in fact I do and then I break them up mostly into country lots of a few hundred mixed stamps and sell them usually for about 25% more than I pay but not until I pick through them for what I want to keep and that process is what takes so long but it's also fun when you pay $50 and you find a handful of stamps you know you can resell at $5 each as you just never know what you'll get. Bottom Line; Count the number of stamps. You can expect to get no more than 5 cents for each stamp. The albums are old and worth about 5 dollars each. Your collection from what I did see is composed of mostly minimum catalog stamps and that is why I came up with the simple valuation. I did not see a US #1or any stamps in the US book because you did not show us this.

How often do expensive stamps just fall into someones hands ? Almost never. Can't tell you how many times people come forward with some stamps thinking they really have something and it all turns out to be practically worthless. If stamps are valuable,... it's a known. Most collections are not advanced and don't have value. If grandpa was an advanced collector and spent some money on it,... that's different.

Most stamps are not worth much. Our club gives them away by the thousands and thousands. For example, out of the 3,000 or so stamps from Czechoslovakia, there are less than 100 worth more than a dollar used. Go to the library and look at a Scott catalog. If listed at $0.25 - it is worthless.

Pretty much depends on how old although there are many common, almost valueless old stamps as well. If you have mint stamps before 1920, they might be worth a look. If the book is not 1000's of stamps a dealer could give you an estimate of value. If it's not someone you know and trust, be present while they look it over. Never allow a buyer to "take it in the back room for a closer look at it".

Only for stamps from the early 1800's which were printed on paper sensitive to acids and oils. Other than that, a stamp collection is something to enjoy. Not be overly paranoid about being in a hermetically sealed air chamber and sealed shut for 40+ years never opened again for fear of damaging them to UV light. You take collecting way too seriously to enjoy it, and you ruined it for yourself constantly chasing value. 95% of stamps are printedin the tens of billions and are worthless. Period.

I have been told by my stamp shop that we have oil on our fingers, even after having washed our hands...that is why we use tweezers...but way before I knew that, I used them...when I started collecting...and I collect stamps dated 1863, among others. @@MrWolfSnack I agree with most of what you say, except for two small things. First, there were no stamps in the early 1800's - the Penny Black was issued in May 1840 and that was the first postage stamp. Second, I would say that more than 99% of stamps have little monetary value. The value is in the hobby itself, and unless you inherit your collection from a rich uncle, the only way to have a valuable collection is to invest a lot of money into it. It is possible to find an "inverted Jenny" in a bag of stamps, but that sort of thing is rare. There are some varieties of common stamps that are valuable but finding them is a chore! I do have stamps from many countries, some are rare, over print, mint etc. I started creating video album of all one by one.. So far done with, AUSTRIA, AUSTRALIA,CUBA,CHINA, and INDIA all with their respective instrumental music... +MsLinkino You have quite a lot, and many are old, some are war stamps from WWII, the Hitler stamp is very common, in my link you will see complete Hitler head sets, the most I paid was $30 for a set, the other Hitler heads were much cheaper. A single stamp would be of no value. Unfortunately there are no scarce or rare stamps in your collection, all are fairly common. +MartialDuartist Good point, to find such books today would be very difficult to obtain. The first book is from Scott's, that company is still active today as it publishes stamp catalogues. You could try eBay but that will be taking a huge risk. I doubt that they will have the type shown (uses hinges), stamp albums with images are today hingeless, you slot the stamp into the perfectly cut holder; a much better way to house the stamp. Get in touch with Scott's who knows what they may have in stock. The Paramount stamp album shown is about 66 years old, and has not been in circulation for over 40 years. I have no idea where one can found today. Motivation gives rise to challenge, attempting to fill any of those books will give you both, and when each page is finished it'll leave a sense of satisfaction and achievement.

Go to your local stamp club. All cities of any size have stamp clubs. Auctions frequently contain old albums for sale. They are given to the club by collectors who move their collections out of old books to new more modern albums or by locals who get them by inheritance and contribute them to the club as a tax deduction. Most clubs are nonprofits. You generally need not be a member if you are a buyer. Selling stamps and stamp products will require you to be a member.

You really have no choice - appraising a collection can take a long time if the person thinks there is potential. Most collections are not worth having appraised so ask a friend who has been collecting for a while to have a look. If he/she thinks it's worth it a good appraiser is probably going to charge between $50 and $100 per hour. My dealer is also an appraiser and charges $60 / hour.

Your advice is good to take your stamps to a dealer known for integrity.The first album is worthless, not worth a dealer's time to look through it. Most likely the same for the US album but there's a teeny probability of a find here but all the stamps look to be common. People who have no stamp knowledge tend to assume because a stamp is old, say over 100 years old, assume it's valuable. Not true in the majority of cases. Some stamps look identical but have different perf measurements (as stated) or colour shades, sometimes making the difference between common and valuable. Condition and centring always matter for "expensive" stamps". There's a huge difference between catalogue value and true market value. If a "good" stamp has significant faults it's no better than a space filler. And be very careful who you buy from on eBay. Many of the sellers don't describe condition deficiencies, and just as bad they don't show a screenshot of the back of the stamp. Would you buy a used car from only looking at a photo? I don't think so. There are so many idiot sellers on eBay.

Roland, can you tell the difference between a 1cent Washington worth 25 cents and one worth $60,000? They look the same without a detailed examination. If you can't tell the difference, it is not wise to assume that YOURS are the rare variety.

If you don't own one. most public libraries should have access to one. Find out how complete the sets are, and whether or not the high values are there.

I am a long time ( 45 year ) stamp collector - my collection is quite valuable because I put a lot of money into it. I don't think casual stamp collections are ever worth much. Most casual collections are mostly made up of stamps with lower face values and the stamps are usually cancelled. The only exception might be from a person casually collecting in the mid to late 1800's. I've had several people I know give me their father's collection to check, as collectors this happens quite often. The book is usually filled with gaps, especially higher denominations are missing. Unless the stamps are very early, the fact that the collector didn't try to fill the gaps almost always ( 99% of the time ) means the collection is not worth that much. There might be the odd treasure, but finding it is very time consuming. I know one dealer who does appraisals at an hourly rate of $60, he is very good and very knowledgeable, but his time does not come cheap! To sum up - the more gaps, the less value in the collection. My Canadian collection has no gaps after 1900 and Not that many before 1900 - high value!
