Today we’re going to talk about Markiplier and his storytelling. And how you can make any story more interesting :-) goo.gl/eLRiqM
If you do storytelling well, you’ll find that people love having you around. It’s also much easier to talk about yourself in attractive or interesting ways. It also greatly helps your persuasion and makes it easy to have a group conversation.
Why Markiplier? We’ve already covered some aspects of storytelling in our videos on Scott Harrison and Kevin Hart, so what I wanted to show you today isn’t how to tell a good meaty story well, but instead how to get people hooked even when your story isn’t super interesting by itself.
So I picked a well known KZbinr named Markiplier because Markiplier is a great example of how to make ANYTHING more interesting. And these lessons transfer very well to storytelling.
For those of you that don’t know Markiplier he got his fame as a Let’s Play KZbinr, where he recorded himself playing videos games. There are tens of thousands of people trying to do this, and Markilplier rose to the top because he can make any given moment seem interesting.
0:24 Quick intro to Markiplier
0:45 How Markiplier starts his storytelling specifically to get listeners eager to hear him speak
1:56 How Markiplier uses his voice to make a story sound more interesting. Especially useful in group conversation.
4:54 Convey emotion when storytelling like Markiplier does and you'll be more captivating. Bonus, you're also much better at persuasion.
8:46 should I do another video on Markiplier that’s about being likable / popular?

One thing I gotta point out is that, apperantly, Mark IS that silly person on real life as well. Not that I've ever met him in person, that's just what his friends and fellow KZbinrs say about him. He isn't faking, he's just exagerated by nature. Something that many people, me included, can relate to.
@Charismaoncommand

Makes total sense. The best possible thing you can do to be charismatic is work to make it a habit so you don't have to think about it or fake anything
@heykenzo4284
@heykenzo4284 6 жыл бұрын
My guess is that a big part of his charisma comes from his childish side. Because we all had that and always will have that childish self, watching someone be a big bearded brat makes us feel that much comfortable on being brats ourselves and laugh out loud to d*ck jokes. And since Mark adds variety to his repertoire (like self deprecating humor, self elevating humor or creepy dark humor) that one side of him doesn't feels too overused.

I get your point, but every successful youtuber is faking. By "faking", I simply mean that they're ramping up their expressions to huge proportions. That's what being an entertainer is. That doesn't mean it's false or disingenuous, just that they're not always cranked up to 11 in real life. Just watch Markiplier's old videos and you'll see how his "character" has evolved. Yes, he's the same person, but he figured out how to be more appealing and presentable on camera.

@@abdmzn Nah, he just sounds like that. It would be SUPER hard to make it that deep for so many years without slipping up or ruining your voice. In the past though (2014-2015-ish) he did kinda fake his voice. Not because he was insecure about it but because he had trouble projecting. But even then you can see in some more quiet or low key videos (like in his vlogs at the time) his voice still sounds deep, but not as radio-showy

I love to tell stories about Mythology and History since they're the most interesting subjects to me. I've always liked stories, no matter if they're real or fake and I've always been a bit of a gamer, so if a game I find has lore in it I will DEFINITELY read the heck out of it. My problem though is that I have a bit of a deep and monotone voice, or so others have told me, and whenever I tell a story in real life I feel like my "audience" (friends) gets bored so this really helps me, thank you for making this video and Markiplier is honestly probably the best choice for a subject like this, I'm not a huge fan of the guy but I do watch his videos from time to time.

damn.... I needed those videos 2 years ago when I started with my new school:'D right now I'll finish soon, but hey... I still have some months left to engage my classmates and co-students and I'm still 19 so I have plenty of time... so thank you for your awesome analyses and tips I appreciate them so much especially this video has some of the most awesome tips. To be honest I used most of those things and to everybode who reads this: *It works!* when I started in the new school I was really happy, active and positive and *talked and entertained* almost everyone, except people I'm nervous around (like my crush... or some guy of my old class). The point is I used most if not all of this. I varied my voice tonality and speed, used emotions and pauses. I did all of this for the first half year, then I got calmer, after 1 and a half year I got some depressions from the pressure of my subjects, and right now I'm here, happy again and trying to become what I once was. I looked so long for the reason, why I was able to tell engaging stories (even though they were boring as f*ck) and for quite some months I was not, and right here are the reasons Again Ben, and Charlie, both of you.... I thank you deep from my heart for your helpful videos and your work you put into this. I really appreciate it and hope you continue with this stuff, as long as possible! Keep up with the great work.

The key to a good story, is visualisation. I have a friend which is deaf mute, and they went to a play with a group and there was a black screen, black dressed actors wearing white gloves. Telling the story by sign language. Everytime you tell a story, it needs to be something people can relate too. For instance, if you're in the commerce business, you could say: "Hey, would you like to maybe have an offer from me if that's ok?". Or, you could say: "Look, You've got a couple of products from us, but not everything. I'd like to sit down with you and see if we have something else that suits your needs. After that, talk it over with your wife after dinner, and I'll contact you in about a week". See the difference? In the first sentence, there's a lack of visualisation, and confidence. In the second sentence, you're putting the person into a position he's familiar with (the kitchen table talks) and you're confident about your own products.

after watching this, I came up with "The 7-11 Story". It's just about getting a slurpee from 7-11 and trying to stop the machine before it overflows, and still having it overflow, and then going home and enjoying the slurpee. I told this with incredible passion and all of my friends got pissed at me because they were so interested in a story about nothing.

This is definitely true. I can only think of one person for whom being monotone worked, and it only worked because she actively dedicated herself to it at all times and had an extremely dry sense of humor. For the vast majority of people, it'll be easier to achieve the Markiplier effect.

I think the problem that a lot of us face when telling stories is: Our primary emotion in our day-to-day is anger, and we spend so much time repressing that anger that we're (at first consciously but eventually subconsciously) forcing ourselves to be monotone. This is especially true for anyone who has worked in retail (or, worse, a deli).

Hi guys! Not sure if this is the place to ask about this, but I was wondering if you can do a breakdown of what makes Tim Bilyeu's speeches so captivating and interesting. I know you do charisma breakdowns and maybe what Tom does is a bit different, but I thought I'd still ask. Keep the awesome videos coming !

4:40 It's pronounced "Glaz-go" Not "Glas-cow" Sorry to be that guy, just a heads up because if you meet a Scot and pronounce it wrong, they will rip the utter shite out of you for the next 10 minutes. Great video as always though, glad I subscribed :)

@Grazikon 6 жыл бұрын
The Scots Gaelic word 'Glaschu' is pronounced /glasaxu/. The original name is Celtic. The first attestation is as 'Glasgu' (in Gaelic). This became the Older Scots Glasgow /glasgu/, Modern English Glasgow (Scottish pronunciation: /glazgo:/) and Modern Scots Glesga~Glesgae~Glesca /glezgə~glezge~gleskə/.

Hey Som! I haven't dealt with that myself, have you Googled to see if anyone has good material on it? My one buddy stuttered very badly for the first 18 years of his life. He was repressing something about himself and was very filtered in general with his speech. Once he stopped repressing his emotions and stopped trying to filter what he said to be perfect, his stutter actually went away completely. I have no idea if that's helpful to you but he's the only person I know who had a stutter so that's the only personal reference I have for it.

Repressed emotions.That sounds interesting. I'll surely work on the topic you've highlighted. Googling doesn't really help because everyone else is in the same state of despair. There's no cure to this- just minor adjustments. I'll have to settle down with it. Thanks again! ~Som.

Hey Ben! Off Topic.... Any tips for naturally increasing your energy levels later in the day? For instance, I am a morning person, so I feel most alive during the first 2/3 of the day. But, come 8:00pm, my body starts winding down. Yet this is when a lot of my socializing takes place, which makes being joyful and charismatic a little bit more challenging. Any tips for natural ways to give your body a little bit of a wake me up (without using a substance like a caffeine or sugar)?

I wouldn't consider myself an expert on this but just from my personal experience, are you working out? And if so, at what time? I find that exercise gives me a high and then a crash. So if I lift at 6pm I'll definitely be awake at 8pm. But if I workout hard at 12pm, I might be more lethargic come 8pm. The other thing is, do you eat a big dinner? On nights where I'm going to go out, I try to do smaller meals more frequently, and even save dinner for when I get home that night if I'm not super hungry before going out. Probably not the best thing for physique to be eating right before bed, but it helps me be light and energetic when I'm out. Or you could try to sneak in a midday nap like Charlie does :-)
