You need to know that the ground on the housing, does not have an insulator around it. What you are calling the ground, is the stator wire.

On the back of the Is alternator there's a black cover and there's one with a red and then there's 1 with nothing The one what the black is the 1 I ground too The one with the red is the output and the 1 with nothing is the exciter That's how my wiring diagram shows me

@@chadbrown85 There are three insulated terminals. Bat Sta and Fld. Bat is the large one where the output is. The Fld is what you are calling the exciter and then the other is the stator. In testing the alternator, the stator isn't used. The ground is one of the screws stocking out with no insulator around it . .because it is grounded to the case. That is how there alternators work. I do Mustang Restorations as well as being a retired Auto Instructor.

@@MrSticks9999is the stator normally hooked up on fords in the 1989 era? I am trying to figure out a charging issue on a 1989 super duty with a 7.3 in it.

@@mikeyazel8725 The stator output is used on idiot light gauge systems. It is often used as power for an electric choke. So yes, on some Fords of that era, it is used.

I take it you useing the battery to supply 12v power to the exciter termanal? You dont say that what your doing. But the exciter needs battery power to kick it in to charge. You can test it in the truck by unplugging the regulator an put a jumper wire from main battery an to the orange exciter termanal in the regulator plug conector.
