Does your motorcycle, scooter, or ATV have charging system problems? Maybe your engine has no spark? In this video I will teach you step by step how to test your stator and help you understand how the ignition system works. To understand how a stator works you should also know the functions of the pickup coil, charging coils, and the exciter coil. These all go hand in hand when testing a stator. I will teach you step by step so you have a full understanding of testing and functionality of the stator. specifically found in motorcycles, scooters, and ATV / UTV. In this video we will be using GY6 stators also know as qmj157 or qmi152 engines. 125cc, 150cc, and 170cc stators.

As a mechanic by trade who has never worked on a scooter or moped, I must say that I found this video very informative. I never knew what a stator did or how it worked. Thank you very much for all the work you are doing to educate those of us that don't have all the knowledge that you do

There have been video''s I've tried to follow along or tutorials where the person explains or try to explain what he's doing but I can tell you honestly there has not been one as much your video that I've watched where I can truly learn and remember something and apply it. What a very good instructor you will make or already are. For me a manual takes forever because of my disability to reading and memory loss where as soon as I done reading a sentence I forget what I just read. Bottom line is that you for sharing your talents with mechanical community out here who strive on repairing their own and getting satisfaction when all goes as plan because of unselfish people like you, Thank you

THANK YOU! I've been rebuilding 70's and 80's bikes for 15 years and someone brought me this GY6 and I've been mind-boggled trying to figure out the no-spark. I've never seen a DC Stator. I've always seen the rotor/stator into the Regulator/Rectifier (and onto the CDI box after '79/'80). All the manuals and test procedures I've found are for testing AC stators and I was starting to think someone hacked into the wiring. Seeing the DC stator on your table and the ground wire and pickup wire with no exciter made me so joyful. I totally get it now. Thanks for making this thorough and thoroughly enjoyable video. Many thanks.

This is help me resolve a problem I have been dealing with for a while. I am now a subscriber. Again thank you!

I just want to say thank you for taking the time to go through some of the minute things which you find in most videos people don't do it's like people think that everybody just automatically knows and I guess from a certain standpoint certain things people should know but when you point out the very small like the dumb stuff which most people would probably consider that's just common knowledge even in those small things when you go around to the big stuff it kind of brings it all together but I just wanted to thank you because for all of us out here that are trying to learn and trying to grow you know in our brains especially when it comes to electrical stuff the very very small stuff and to teach on a video like you're teaching a 5 year old is probably the best way to do it because if a thousand people watch this every one of them for the most part is going to have one little thing even if they knew everything else one thing is going to stand out that oh I didn't know that and I've had several of those just watching this video oh I didn't know that so appreciate you taking the time teach to us like 5 year olds because when it comes to electrical electrical it can be very confusing and the majority of us don't know much about electrical mine a little bit but not the majority and we don't know a lot about electrical it's a very difficult thing especially when it gets into real depth of running 15 different wires and 60 different places and a mile away in one little vehicle it's making it pretty pretty out there God bless

Hey Rolling Wrench, Thank you for this informative video. I just changed out the Stator in my Yamaha 2000 VSTAR 1100 motorcycle. Last year my go to bike shop mentioned to me the bike isn't charging properly and its time to replace the stator. So last week I did it, no biggie right but now I know why they want $700 to change it out, its all labor. I haven't started it yet because I'm waiting for the new battery and I haven't put oil in it yet either. So I have the older stator and I was going through the various test that you thoroughly describe, its a 12 volt 3 phase stator. The stator resistance, was 4 ohms, the requirement is .36 to 44 ohms, it appears low and this may contributed to charging issue. But I believe the issue with it is when I tested the pickup coil resistance, it requires 189-231 ohms. There are 2 wires in the pickup a gray and a black, I switched my analog meter to 100k and tested it. Can I assume the gray wire was equivalent to your blue wire and the black is ground? My reading was nothing at all. I assume I'm doing this right, I think the pickup coil is smoked and attributed to the charging issue. Any suggestions or help would be much appreciated.
