How to Test and Repalce an EVAP Canister HD

Today we remove and test an EVAP charcoal canister. The canister is designed to hold hydrocarbons from the fuel system when the vehicle is not running. Under normal operation, the vapor is sent to the intake manifold when the engine is operating. This was performed on a 1997 Nissan Maxima. Check with your vehicle's repair manual for testing parameters.

He didn’t check the vent valve correctly 🤦‍♂️ it might be stuck open. That’s why the air flowed right through. Isn’t it supposed to be closed when power is off to it?

@@rPlatt73 great point. This cannister is supposed to open and close at the right moment. It can certainly be stuck open and at other times be stuck closed. It needed further testing to verify.

The flow of air from one port to another just means the air can still pass thru. The carbon has to still be activated to do its job. Once the carbon is no longer activated you have to replace it.

Depending on the specific vehicle you could probably test it on the vehicle and save the removal and reassembly time if it's not bad.

Probably want to get a code reader first. Code readers aren't that expensive. If CEL came on for something else, messing with gas cap is already a waste of time/money. For example I'm getting intermittent code for "oxygen bank1 sensor1 slow response"... Damn code comes & goes; I probably just need to clean the O2 sensor.

thanks, I just went to a auto yards where you pull your own parts. took pictures of how everything is hooked up, pulled the part and replaced it on mine. still didn't take care of my problem. Well the charcoal still needs to be able to absorb the fumes sufficiently as to not trigger a code. It's not just a matter of whether the canister is plugged.

FYI you should also test from the tank side to the vent side with the purge capped, I'll seen these clog that way.

No fuel smell, P0455 . new LDP, canister flow valve, new canister vapor solenoid. new fuel cap, still this code. Shop did a smoke test, no signs of smoke. 2004 grand Cherokee.

I got a question. Hoping someone can tell me. I think this is a problem I am having. I took my car out on a dirt road. its a 2010 infinti ex35. After I drove it that day. I smell gas fumes. All the time. Car off and on. I know its not a leak in the tank. I would be losing gas and I am not. And it happens no matter how much gas I have in the tank. I am allergic to anything petroleum. I cant drive it. So would this cause gas fumes?? Thanks

You didn’t check the vent valve 🤦‍♂️ it might be stuck open. That’s why the air flowed right through. Shouldn’t it be closed when car is off/no power to it? P0497

Mines got 8 hoses coming out of it and 3 valves mounted to it as well.. from the valves there a total of 10 hoses coming off the charcoal box.. 5 go to the tank, 2 to air, and the rest go to the front of the car.. which one do i blow through? Blew through one and gas came out of another. Blew you cant blow through some others and some you can blow.. one blew out some black soot and one blew out some white soot looking like ashes.. one valve opens when energized one closes and the other valve has a little foam ball in it like a check valve.. i think im just going to throw the entire thing in the garbage and block off all the hoses. Rout the ones that go to sensors to the gas tank and the sensor wires ill figure out ohmage and put a resistor in em.. stupid evap crap..

2006 Pontiac Torrent 3.4L V6 Could i Eliminate the vapor canister all together as this is annoying, This is the second time in 6 Months had to replace it. Vapor Solenoid. as when i shut off my vehicle waiting for around 10 minutes you gets a knocking noise right under the drivers side seat under the Vehicle that's where the Vapor Canister is located. If the cost of fuel wasn't so expensive here in Ontario Canada at a $1.50 Liter. Incomplete test, because you didn't test the vent hose. If the vent hose was clogged, there will be no fresh air intake while the engine sucking vapor from the canister, this will lead the canister low pressure then sucking the fuel tank, nomally you can hear the sound when open the fuel cap, and a P0441 code.

Good info. Unfortunately, I already assumed that at 150k, the canister was plugged. Now that I find its working ok, guess I'll just return it to Amazon... Probly not the only time this has happened. The mechanic that checked mine he left it on the vehicle all he did was remove a hose when he did a smoke test and you could see the white smoke coming out of the hose is this the correct way to check a cars charcoal canister? I mean obviously if you were move a hose it's going to be coming out of the hose I don't know I'm a little confused about it. I didn't see any white smoke at all coming out of the canister or anything like that until he removed one hose

Great information, 2011 Tacoma, code 456(evap small leak) smoke test shows smoke coming from tube that is attached the gas filler neck. Gas filler was covered and OEM gas cap remove. Attached tube was left uncovered during test and smoke was coming out. Technician wants to replace charcoal canister. Any advise. Thanks

Nope and in that case only if you turn it on for a while, if you do it off then you don't need it.

I have a car puzzle mystery if any mechanics want to give me your input. There is a 2011 KIA Soul throwing a P0455 (large evap leak) code. We replaced the gas cap with an OEM KIA cap. I replaced the Canister Purge Valve solenoid. We ran smoke though it and saw no leaks anywhere. Took it to a Kia Dealership. They tested everything , bench tested the Evap canister , evap vent valve, gas cap , tested fuel pressure sensor and everything is checking out OK. But the P0455 code keeps coming back? The dealership said the Evap canister looks a little swollen but didn't show any signs of visible leakage. They said they could put a new Evap canister and evap canister filter on (which is 800 bucks) but cant guarantee that this will fix the problem. I was hoping that one of you on my friends list has gone through this or a mechanic might have a suggestion. Thanks

I'm having trouble filling up at the pump. I replaced the Evap. Vent Solenoid, but still having trouble at pump. I removed the canister drove for gas and the tank fills fine. When I blow through the tank side of canister and plug the fresh air side air moves through very easily. When I plug the line going to the engine and blow air through the tank side, it acts like there is a partial blockage and air doesn't move well at all. It does move but not well. Is this normal? My thought is no, and is why the pump shuts off. Any ideas? BTW I have a 2005 GMC Sierra

No stalling on mine, but it does make sense that it could. I suspect that if your tank isn't venting then your tank is going to be under a vacuum when running. Which could put stress on your fuel pump, thus making it difficult to get fuel to the engine. I replaced my Fuel Vapour Canister (AKA Charcoal Canister) and all is good now. What kind of vehicle you got?

If I blow into the big hole, nothing happens. It pressurizes. If I block the small or medium hole and blow into the unblocked one, air comes out the big hole. Is this normal operation?
