Thanks I needed a refresher course. I replaced it in 2018 and already failed today. They don’t last long.

I think gauging the expansion tank’s pressure after installation will just show the system’s psi, that is the psi pushed to the tank whether the tank is ok, or waterlogged. You have to depressurize the system, in order to measure the tanks psi; it will then show its actual air pressure if ok or 0 psi if the bladder has failed.

Pressure should be equalized when cool. I may have not clarified this in the video. When I measured, system was cool. Tank precharge psi does often match the cool water pressure on these systems.

the modern tanks have the bladder pushed all the way to top of tank by the 12 psi they put in at the factory, so it does not matter which way the tanks mounted the bladder is not flat and stretched tight in center it is domed to use entire inside of tank for expansion. you could always move the tank to a nicer location.

Some very small amount of trapped air when brand new, probably fine, but it can also collect air after install as well.

well, any air bubbles in system get slowly absorbed as boiler heats up and cools if you have auto air Seperator or auto vents they will get rid of air that's why nobody uses the old cylindrical tanks up in ceiling the air was slowly absorbed and replaced with water till they were full and it is a pain to get level right plus then you get corrosion from air in system.@@realhouseDIY

Amtrol product brochure will describe the preferred and not suitable placement position, eg., up, down or sideways.

This is what my brochure states. Other products may be different but I'm not familiar with them all.

So im going to be replacing me amtrol ex-30 expansion tank on my boiler. Has a pinhole in the side of it. Ive watched other videos of replacing for a water heater. And the idea is to charge the tank to house pressure. But in this particular case (boiler function) i assume i would just leave the new precharged amtrol tank to the 12 psi it has in it? I did check the pressure of the original tank while its still part of the system and it shows 15-16 psi. My boiler right now shows a pressure reading of approx 16 psi. I have a shut off before the pressure reducing valve (which than goes into the expansion tank), but none after the tank. Should i shut the house water off? Thanks

Yes, keep it charged at the lower psi for the lower boiler pressure. If the shutoff between the house water and the expansion tank is working, then use that but certainly doesn't hurt to turn off the main shutoff too. You will have water pressure on the boiler side too. If no shutoff after the expansion tank, you may not need to drain the system but relieve the pressure at a drain valve. Some water will spill so make sure heat has been off for a while.

it is a different tank for water heaters made for city water pressure the one for boilers usually come with 12 psi already in tank for boiler pressures.

The expansion tank should be pressurized to your normal heating system pressure. That psi is set by the water fill device, normally set for 12 psi, but could be higher. You could dial the water fill device down a bit. The expansion tank should be set for the same psi, and even 1-2 psi higher. If set lower than system psi, the tank will take water even when cold, when the fill device lets in water until its psi setting is reached. You should air pump the expansion to 12 psi, or your system psi, when cold, or 1-2 psi higher, before installing it. Once installed, it will just show your systems psi.

I see the pump and the expansion tank. Does that mean it is a hot water system and NOT steam?

@@313-v9k yes, I will clarify this in the title/description. Thank you for the input!
