The alternator signals the ECM, or vehicle's computer, during charging. The EMC then controls the voltage generated at the alternator according to the electrical load determined by the ELD. This reduces engine load to improve fuel economy. A common symptom of a failed ELD are dimming headlights. Additionally, the vehicle may show a rough idle.

you neglect to mention to protect the alligator clip and probe terminal from shorting to ground.

I have a 99 civic DX. The ELD is unfortunately installed with wiring clip at bottom of fuse box. You must DC negative bat cable, remove 3 bolts around fuse box, then open bottom of box (loosen 8 small clips around perimeter), then you'll have access to release wiring clip to test.

My Odyssey (04) went all haywire and fried its cheap battery that I bought to get by. . is- it ~possible that the dash trouble lights for the doors' ajar alerts aNd the battery light won't go out because the power from the alternator and/or ignition fedback into the ELD and fried it too?

unfortunately the wiring harness is underneath the fuse box in my car so the whole fuse box needs to be pulled
