This is EXACTLY what i needed to see. This P1298 code is the last of the bugs i've been chasing down on this car. First it was a crank position sensor, then the idle control valve, and now this P1298 is the last code to fix on this car so i can smog it and register it. Thank you for the detailed and informative video. Much appreciated!

Thank you for the great video, Jim. As usual, a great walk thru that saved us lots of aggravation and money. I spent more time driving to the dealer to get the part then it took to actually replace it. In my case, this one part took care of two trouble codes: P1293 fir the ELD and P1457 Evap canister leak. Be sure to call several Honda dealers for pricing, because they all charge what ever they want. My two local dealers were $30 apart in pricing, and I was able to purchase for $51.00. (I needed it fast otherwise I would have ordered online for less.)

Thanks so much Jim! I was having a rough idle, especially with the AC on. I would get random fluctuations in RPM, car felt bogged down, and idle surges at traffic lights. I didn't have a check engine light, but I ran the code scanner anyways. Pulled up a P1298 somehow and the electrical load detector came up on google. Grabbed one from the dealer, and with the help of your video, had it changed in no time. I pulled the fuse and reset the ECU, drove it around the block, and the idle surge seemed to have stopped. When I got back I checked the code and it was no longer there. Hope that was the ultimate issue and my car starts running well after my ECU relearns my driving habits.

Hey Jim. I changed the cam shaft sensor and the electronic load detector. The codes were a p1298 and also p0340. I erased the check engine light and let it warm up in idle for a good 15 to 20 minutes. The engine light came on. When I scanned it came up once again as the p0340. Can you please help or give me some input. Thanks,

I have an 09 Civic si. I’m unable to remove the fuse box housing because it’s factory zip tied to some sort of hose full of cables. I don’t even think if I cut the zip tie I’d have enough slack to invert the box. I can’t find any videos to confirm that my generation of Civic even uses the ELD like these earlier models. Any ideas?

Great post Jim, I so wish my 2001 Honda Civic EX 5 speed manual was this easy, I'm being told that I need to replace the entire fusebox as the ELD cannot be removed for my model. Wish somehow I could get around that, as $270.00 is a lot of money to pay for such a small part. My code reader shows the ELD, and the car has developed the dreaded searching 'up and down' idle. By the way my engine compartment is so 'like new' compared to the car you serviced. LOL! Thanks for the excellent video.

Hey Jim, just curious, how would the car overheat if the thermostat is stuck open? I thought that would just make the engine run cooler never reaching operating temperature, but would overheat if the thermostat were stuck closed. Thanks in advance.
@jimthecarguy
@jimthecarguy 8 жыл бұрын
Actually if the thermostat is stuck open the coolant will just circulate and get hotter .The thermostat when it closes will hold the coolant in the radiator for a short time to cool it down and then when the thermostat opens the cooler anti with exchange for the hotter coolant.

Thanks for the video. Interesting to see how car manufacturers deal with this kind of issues. So it's known there is an issue with the ELD on the car, they issue a TSB but still the owner has to pay for the parts and labor to get this fixed. I'm wonder when something is considered Recall and when is TSB.
@jimthecarguy
@jimthecarguy 9 жыл бұрын
gianfrancoa Thanks for watching and your feedback.Ya if your out of warranty the TSB says "Out of warranty: Any repair performed after warranty expiration may be eligible for goodwill consideration by the District Parts and Service Manager or your Zone Office. You must request consideration, and get a decision, before starting work."
@jgizzy
@jgizzy 6 жыл бұрын
Not everything becomes a recall, in fact most issues do not. A TSB is a technical service bulletin, which are created when a more common issue/concern/fault is associated with a car. The primary reason for these bulletins is to assist repair technicians in more quickly finding and understanding the issue like: where to look for the fault, what the symptoms are, what causes it, how can it be fixed. It's to make techs diagnose and repair more quickly and consistently. Most good techs will read through as many TSBs as possible, sort of like doing homework. But what a TSB is not, is an admission of 'bad design' or a free repair campaign for the issue. Though some TSBs will talk about repair for free if under warranty or consideration for 'goodwill gesture' in which the manufacturer may pay some percentage of it or even all of it, at their discretion.

Find as many ground points as possible and inspect and clean them. Many times single ground points have up to 6 wires going to it and so one bad ground can cause a lot of electrical issues from seemingly unrelated systems.

help - I have a 1995 Honda Odyssey. The engine is in great shape. The battery loses a charge. I have a check engine light codes 14 and 41. I have changed the alternator, I have changed the battery, changed the battery cables, checked the alternator belt and connector to the alternator. The car runs with a fully charged batter at around 14-13 volts. After running for about 3 hours with the lights and radio on it drops to 12.2 and then to 11.6. After another 2 hours the car dies. Voltage at battery once it dies 1.82 - any ideas - suggestions. I appreciate your help, I am lost!!!

+Teresa Duran The codes that you have can not cause the charging problem.The 14 is for the air bag and the 41 is for a wheel speed sensor.To me it sounds like you have a bad alternator but you will need to have the charging system checked when the charging voltage is low.Keep me posted.Jim

Nice video, I have a 97 prelude with charging issues, a new battery has been installed and the alternator was rebuilt and tested fine afterwards off the car. When I turn on car it starts at 14.1 volts then slowly just draws the battery down, when electrical load is applied it reads about 13.5 and eventually the battery light and E brake light on gauge will illuminate. I cleaned up the grounding points and checked cables for excessive resistance and even tried my obd 1 ECU to see if that could be the problem, same results occured. No CEL light has came on but do you still think this could be the cause and not allowing ecu to send the signal to alternator? I am still going to remove and visually check it meanwhile. Do you have any other suggestions, thanks in advance.

repeatman I don’t believe this is true cuz I am having the same issues I am not getting 14 volts when my car is runnin and if I keep my car on it slowly goes down in volts and I brought my car to Honda dealership a few days ago and they said it was a bad alternator and that I shouldn’t use an aftermarket one so I buy a used oem alternator out of the same accord I Own and change the battery terminals and it didn’t fix anything at all so at this point I’m going to install a new eld but I don’t know what else it could be. I’ve installed 3 alternators from autozone and then a day ago a used oem from junk yard that came from the same year make and model installed it and still not getting 13 or 14 volts at all and just slowly drains my battery while the car is running

I have a 2012 Honda Civic Si, How hard would it be to show how to run a bypass on the ELD? I have a huge sound system with a auxiliary battery in the trunk. The ELD is preventing the alternator from outputting and staying in the higher current mode when I need it too. I also upgraded to a High amp alternator (Ohio Generator) but it doesn't matter if it pumps out 1000 amps the ELD still cuts it to 12 volts in order to save on gas mileage. The ELD is such a pain for people with large sound systems in their cars. I just want to run it old school, but with a switch so I can manually turn it back to "Gas Savings Normal" when I'm transporting the elderly.
