Thanks a lot for this. Helped me diagnose a shutoff solenoid problem on my Golf II -- connection corroded, so only 8 V getting through to the solenoid and car not starting. Cleaned terminal and that was it. €100 garage costs saved. Owe you a pint!

You my friend, are my current real life hero!! Had issues with my Massey 6140 for ages, buggering about and randomly cutting out. Was a loose negative connection in the IP solenoid!! Thanks dude, awesome 👍🏻

FUEL-SHUT-OFF SOLENOID PROBLEM SOLUTION: A friend of mine has a Kubota diesel garden tractor of some sort, not sure what model, and a couple of years ago he came to me with this problem where he could not shut off the tractor (engine). This appears to be what you are talking about here. My friend wanted to know if I could design a circuit that would engage the tractor's fuel-shut-off solenoid so that when the key is turned off the tractor engine would quit by starving it of fuel. Which, he told me, is how it actually worked - as originally designed - until the original circuit/board/module went bad after which - try as he might - he could not find a replacement fuel-shut-off board/module. So I accepted the design challenge ... which is engaging the fuel-shut-off solenoid (applying voltage to it) with the key off long enough to starve the engine of fuel (thereby stopping it). The trick is to not engage the solenoid for too long which could - at the very least; a) drain the solenoid-engaging power source (the tractor battery ?? or other battery source?) and/or b) possibly run excessive current through the solenoid coil and damage it. So, to cut to the chase on this, I ended up designing two different self-contained circuits (both use tractor battery power very briefly to power the solenoid) to shut down the tractor engine within 5 - 7 seconds of key-off. My friend tried both and then settled on the smaller solid-state version rather than the larger relay version, and he's used it successfully ever since. If anyone is interested in acquiring this solution, let me know via email at cactusreedllc@gmail.com. If there is enough interest I'll look into manufacturing these designs.

Is this the same as Fuel Shut Off Solenoid ? The Fuel Shut Off Solenoid on the Kubota ZD 21 zero turn was replaced. I mowed about 3 acres with it, no problem. Then it did not want to turn off, trying various methods, and finally died. I have had issues in the past with it dying when i reduce throttle before turning it off.

My 2001 Toyota Hilux 5L diesel. Should the solenoid activate with ignition switch first click (radio on), second click (low plugs on), or third click (starter motor on)? My igniion fuse is blowing on the third click.

I had a problem with my JCB 215 shutting down after running for a while. It would start immediately and run a while, and then shut down. It would start a few times and shut down, and then not start until it cooled. I replaced the shut off solenoid which helped but did not solve the problem. I found the power cable compromised. The copper wire was tarnished. I think when it ran a while it heated and the resistance increased to a point where the solenoid would not stay open. I replaced the cable and the tractor now runs.

Where was the power cable / copper wire that was tarnished? Was it at the battery or the power wire part of the switch for the solenoid switch it self?

Thank you. Testing the wires, I have just under 12v when I turn the key to first position. Testing the solenoid on a 12v car battery, the solenoid plunger retracts. But when I connect the wires to the solenoid not screwed into the carbureteur the plunger does not retract. Any ideas? The engine turns over well and starts with a burst of carb cleaner.

@@phillipm4855 So sorry, I can't remember what the problem was, and can only presume there was a solution. (I don't even understand what I wrote! It's double-Dutch to me now.) When I get a minute I'll watch the video again and IF I can dredge something from my memory will get back to you.

I've just gone put to take a look at my rarely used Viking mower (I prefer my ancient Murray which doesn't have such stupid sophistication). I had disconnected the wiring, therefore must have snipped off the plunger so the petrol can always flow (a simple cheap cut-off tap would do as well). Apparently if I remember correctly, they invented it to stop the engine backfiring when switched off. My Murray has a fuel tap but in fact I never use it; starts first time and when I switch off (dropping revs for 20 secs) it never farts.
