VERY good demo.one more thing to check. Make sure you check the plunger on the new and old solenoid .I have found in some cases they are of a different shape. If you install the wrong shaped plunger on your truck it will not shut off. This problem seems to be with the aftermarket ones .Genuine ones don't seem to have this problem.I have run into this problem twice and ended up installing a GENUINE stop solenoid.

OMG, You have saved my day today! I was driving my truck to get Road Worthy ( mot) certificate. My truck stop at top of hill. I instantly thought my truck had ran out of fuel. I am new to Diesel machine so I could only remember what I watched in youtube... Ummm do I need to bleed fuel system? I saw a little nut on top of fuel filter holder but I only had 14 and 13 mm spanners and a wing nut. I used 14mm spanner and jammed wingnut between that air bleed nut and managed to bleed system?...? But still no go! I called towing truck and watched few youtube and this one. I remember seeing some kind of sensor with electronic spade and one wire with spade connector nearby which looked connected to other device. After watching your video, I just thought someone had removed spring and pin from solenoid switch and made it always open? I did not think much of it. But I decided to look at one cable near by to see where it is connected. Wow it is not connected to anything! I guess vibration of motor had eventually made it come loose. I tried to push it back but no resistance so I used my teeth to press connector wings down bit and reconnected it to solenoid. turn the key ! Bang! It started instantly. I could not believe it! I leant something new today. Thank you so much! I enjoy watching your Land Rover Videos so much! Kaz, Melbourne, Australia!

Hi there. Thanks for sharing the videos ... quite informative and very useful. I have a problem that I can't really understand. My stop solenoid gets interrupted by these little tiny metal fillings and I can't start the engine or turn it off. Have to stall the car so many times...Problem is usually sorted by giving the solenoid a good clean. It doesn't look like rust (it's an offroad defender 200tdi) I've gotten used to the idea that the pump might go soon. What you think? Thanks for your time

thanks for the reply,forgot to add ,i changed the cylinder head 3 weeks ago dont think i introduced any dirt but will check the fuel lines anyway,the fault clears if i tap the throttle,its not played up today but developed a massive oil leak on the front of the engine,think its the crank seal,land rovers are great unless you cover large mileages and rely on them everyday,i seem to be fixing something all the time on it at the moment

Thanks again Chris! Your videos saved the day. Went to go out yesterday and thought I'd better check under the bonnet after a cold snap overnight. Found my fuel stop solenoid had cracked on top and was leaking a LOT of fuel. A quick look at this video and an hour messing round with different tools got my spare one installed and me back on the road. Cheers! :)

Quick question that I’m sure you’ll know the answer: if this fuel cut-off valve isn’t working correctly does it cut off current to the starter? When I attempt to turn over my ‘86 110, there is no mechanical clicking or rather, there is complete silence. I’m puzzled! Thanks!

My 200Tdi Discovery has started to make a very bad noise and a strong rattle when turninng the engine off. Could a faulty solenoid be the cause for this? Thanks!

Just done a head swap on my D1 and now it refuses to start. I checked the solenoid and I can hear it click, the system primed fine from the lift pump but when I undid the union on the number 1 injector I only got a small drip when cranking, I'm guessing that's not right. Is there a chance that even though I can hear the solenoid click it has gone bad and isn't letting fuel through? I had noticed that the orange and brown wire to the glow plug relay was kinked behind the battery and testing it showed and intermittent connection, will check it when the battery is charged but could it possibly be affecting the solenoid or simply stopping the glow plugs from working?
@trailerfitter28 жыл бұрын
try direct feed so you know your wire is supplying the pump. Pump is self bleeding so my need a bit of cranking to get the fuel through. You probably know this but you have checked to make sure your fuel supply pipes are not kinked or damaged when you were wokign on it. ( yes it has happened to me before) .

Hi i have the same system you are working on in the vid when the car is ticking over i have fuel dripping from what looks like a wire on the left side of it would you have any idea what this could be and if it could be fixed .. I have no idea if these things have gaskets on them thanks

Not sure if you will see this Chris but I am planning on using this solenoid (the power supply) for a power source to power an electric fan on my VW LT35 (the viscous van has been removed by a previous owner) The LT35 has a VE pump fitted. Any thoughts on that idea most welcome.

What a great vid, thank you. I have a ticking from this solenoid with ignition half turned. Cranks ok and fires if you keep the starter running. Is the clicking a fault or does that mean its operating nomally. Many thanks. Rob

Hi mate can I replace the solanoid without taking pump off ....thankyou

My 3 month old replacement failed in open position. I replaced and new one works fine. Seems very odd it failed in open position. I even pulled the wire off to confirm not an electrical problem. Any thoughts as to what happening there? Wondering if supply line fuel pressure got too high for the spring ? Getting solenoid on and off a pita too as cable plate in the way so can't get proper swing on spanner.

No evidence of debris on the plunger or deterioration of the plastic end. As I said only 3 month old...

Hi there ! I have an accute buzzing noise on a 300 TDI from 1998 when turning the contact on without starting the engine. The buzzing continues after I start the engine and it appears to be comming from the injection pump. This buzzing sounds electric and I wonder if it's related to the solenoid. Looking forward to your advice. Cheers

Yes it is.

thanks for the tip ! If the solenoid is buzzing and the car works flawlessly should I be hasting to replace it ? I have planned a 250 mile trip this weekend and I'm a bit worried, even though the buzzing has been happening for some time. Cheers

High chap just bought an old banger for my sis to use for a while - rover 420sdi I think they use a VP37 pump, car startsbut then revs its self up to 2000rpm and returns to idle straight away with a puff of black smoke. Problem is that the EML light stays on and the power is restricted could this be linked to a cut off solenoid ? regards will

hi, i have a 300 tdi. when i drive it for a couple of kilometres and the engine hot. it fails to start immediately after parking it. i have to wait a couple of minutes for it to cool down then it will start with no problems. i am suspecting that maybe the starter motor is damaged and that maybe it overheats. or could it be the solenoid? please help. or plus i recently had the gasket changed..
@trailerfitter29 жыл бұрын
+Brian Mctribouy Starter motor. Yes could be the solenoid on the starter. You need to a voltage drop test on the cables and motor to see if you can narrow the issue down a bit
@markd3ful10 жыл бұрын
would this cause a total rev drop on a 300 tdi defender non edc? new lift pump and fairly new throttle cable,cant see issues with the cable but going to check it at the weekend,not fun pulling 70 on the m way to find the powers gone its just idling,hopefully not my pump
@trailerfitter210 жыл бұрын
Could be an issue. Usually it gives a non start situation. Perhaps you are drawing air into the diesel fuel system before the lift pump or have a partial blockage ( at the banjo unions is a good place to look).

My 200 tdi doesnt cut off by itself and I have to stall it. Is it possible the spring inside the solenoid to be worn or the o-ring?

perhaps the plunger rubber ( which is on the end of the plunger has disintergrated

+Land Rover Toolbox Videos Thanks. I just wanted to share what the culprit was. I took the smoke screw out because it was in the way and there was some corrosion on the end of it. Then I took the solenoid off and it had a few very tiny shavings of metal on the plunger, probably stopping it from shutting properly. Changed with a new one and problem solved, but my concern is the pump now. Engine runs spot on but should I expect the pump to fail since the corrosion and bits of metal I found in it? What would be the cause of the corrosion Thanks
@trailerfitter28 жыл бұрын
+Hristian Tenches corrosion is from water in the diesel. As for the metal shaving that is not good at all. Hopefully there is only a small amount in there and it has gone no further into the pump. Now you have to find out where the metal has come from. I fear your pump has a problem. any other component then the metal would have had to get through the filter first and I doubt that.
