can you use this to measure voltage while the chair is operating? my chair is fully charged but looses power rapidly going uphill. tha batteries are 7 month opld

Ok I understand the comments regarding the need for load testing. I have a wheelchair base that I used to turn into an electric cart. The controller has been giving me low power indication when under load in spite of a lengthy charge. Batteries charged up to over 28VDC over night right after I removed them from charger. The next day they were still over 26VDC. I removed them from base and they are now reading 13VDC and 12.9VDC respectively. My question is would my local auto parts store be able to tell me if these were bad? I'm guessing I should replace both if one is bad. Please reply if you know. Thanks!

That's just measuring surface voltage not the actual working voltage. A battery can read 12.8 volts and appear serviceable but under load will fail.

Thank you for your video. Can you please advise, Jazzy select 6 with 8 month 2 acid sealed 12v batteries low usage in-house. original charger showing full charge green light total of charge rate 25v (not 27v as mentioned in video), however joystick battery indicator showing low battery (only first LED 2 lights red, and orange, means 20% CHARGE). the Battery measure 25.6v stand alone measured at joystick port, and measure 24.3 under battery load test, (which measured while driving wheelchair and Voltmeter attached to joystick controller port). It is tricky as the load test for 1/2 mile on middle speed, load-reading start 25.4v down to 24.3v. The battery read 25v after load test . Is the battery is ok or it is controller joystick reader is the problem?. I replaced joystick controller as previous old one was giving same 2 lights low charge after fully charge battery and in addition an error 7 flashing code, which indicate joystick controller problem according jazzy select 6 manual. however same low chage still showing when battery fully charged. Do you think second (used) joystick controller also faulty in reading battery charge or it is the battery? Should I just leave charger additional 12 hours after it indicate fully charged as it just does not provide the 27v while charging. Charger label : maximizer A 24030-9c 24v acid Battery dc output 24v 3A. thank you..

So your charger should be pushing out 27 to 29v while charging then drop some to a trickle charge when fully charged. Your batteries seem good under load so get new charger. No need to do 1/2 a mile load test, just 5 to10 yards will tell you. Get them batteries up to max volts before they start deteriorating.

my volt testers are not reading anything. i have three of them and they are not reading, even though i have them set right and these are new batteries that are working. i have done this test on a different scooter but on this city cruzer scooter its not showing any readings. i guess i will have to take the batteries out and test them

It's a good idea in theory but doesn't really work in practical use and here's why. Just like a car battery it can read proper voltage when charged, however when load is applied they drop off. Because voltage is a capacitance number what really matters is the amp hour and under load when the amperage falls so does the voltage so a load test is a better test. Because even a bad battery can read as good with voltage. When doing a load test you can simply put your voltmeter on measure voltage inhibit the vehicle's motion and then activate the motors. Put the chair up against the curb most likely reverse attach the voltmeter get a baseline and then activate the chair to push against the curb and take note of the voltage under load. If it drops too far batteries need replaced. As an occupant or a daily user you can tell this when traveling long distances if the chair doesn't seem as strong sort of how it feels when under new batteries when they're half charged. Or as I like to call it when the chair feels asthmatic. When it just keeps getting slower and slower and slower and doesn't really have any strength. But also note that most insurances will not replace batteries except for once a year even if manufacturer or instruction manual says different.

is this just a straight battery test ….or does it test the load ? only asking because my batteries are showing a voltage of 12.7 to 12.8 each. but im told this don't really tell me what state batts are in I need to do a load test. but don't have a load tester. is this a load test please? thankyou

Correct this is just a voltage reading test. Voltage alone will not tell you in what stage of condition the batteries are. Under load that voltage reading can drop and then rise again. What you would want is have meter for volts and other for amps. That would allow you to somewhat determine what amphours your battery condition has of life when fully charged. Unless u have a fancy digital meter for batteries only.

But this test in the video is better then no testing at all when only a multimeter is available. Cause a battery with 10 volts can be a bad cell already, so i would i least want to do this test if only testing available.

Our Golden LiteRider Envy has two 12V 22AH Bright Way Group batteries of unknown age/treatment. They came with the wheelchair we bought from a wheelchair dealer. This issue we're having is that the wheelchair reports full power (all LEDs lit up) and then, after awhile (less than 2 miles now), will suddenly start flashing one red LED. There is no warning. Just all... or nothing. This is not typical behavior, which I believe should be that the wheelchair slowly ticks down the LEDs, as the battery gets weaker, not just "Everything is great!" and then suddenly "I'm dying!" I'm assuming that behavior is of an old or weak battery. Am I correct? Should I buy Bright Way Group batteries to replace the old ones or is their extremely low price an indicator of quality?

I had many times 24v there but 1st battery 11v and 2nd battery 13v ( undercharged and overcharged )

Buy a load tester if batteries run down fast. They may show good voltage but not stand up to load. A load tester will check the battery You will have to take them out of the box (2x12v) but you can then check if one is failing. 👍

A better test is a load test, leave the probes in and then move the chair with someone in it, I've had batteries that read 27V but when they get a load it sags all the way to 17-18V, so low the controller just says "nope" and it won't move.

What do you then if the new batteries fail the load test? I bought new batteries but the green lights on the control stick go down really fast.

That isn't a accurate read. You need to put resistance onto the batteries and see how much the voltage will drop. But your information on how much the voltage the batteries should be is correct.

I am physically disabled person, lost both my legs in my childhood due to POLIO, I can't move a single step without wheelchair. One wise person gifted me a brand new Electric Wheelchair in December 2022 in which a Lithium ion battery of was installed. I am using this Electric Wheelchair since then. But from last month I am facing a problem that the wheel chair is stopping on full charge and its not turning on till we put it on charging. Before this it was working fine and giving me battery a very good battery timing and took 7 hours to charge battery from zero to 100. But now it took only 2 hours to charge and giving very minimum battery time. Please help me solve this issue as it is the only mean of my transportation. I can't afford to buy a new Electric Wheelchair.

If you could get hold of a multimeter and check battery voltage without charging and also check while charging. Lithium batteries should show a bit more voltage that lead acid.
