How to Thread a CCTV Cable through a Cavity Brick Wall

This is a simple guide on how you can thread a CCTV cable through a cavity brick wall. Unfortunately CCTV cables are not like rigid like a television cable and therefore almost impossible to thread through a cavity brick wall. To solve this problem all you need to do is tape one of the connection points back and bend the cable slightly down, and then the final step is to get your hands on some rigid thin metal wire. Ideally, a metal coat hanger or some garden wire is great for this job.

Drill a bigger hole and use a plastic tube to feed the wires through, seal hole with a sealant.... Job done 😁

ive done a few cctv installations and i find that if you drill a 20mm hole in the wall and slide a 20mm conduit pipe into it alot easier. cut the pipe at both ends so its flush with the wall, feed the wires through and put clear sealant on the outside and a pattress box and pvc plate with holes drilled for the wires on the inside, looks more professional and tidy :)

My CCTV kit came with rubber grommets to plug the holes after installation. It also came with a length of 23mm plastic conduit to help with sliding the camera cables through the walls. Once the cables are through the wall, remove the conduit and move on to the next camera install.

When installing my lorex system. I drill a 1" hole thru the brick. Ran bailing wire from outside to inside. Tape together and pulled thru while someone else made sure wires didn't tangle up . Outside install a plastic junction box attached camera to lid put together. Other cameras I ran thru 1" inch grey pvc pipe to protect from weather and squirrel.

Hi Joe, SNAP I'm about to do the same, the boot on the connector for the latest Swann cameras is ridiculous. as for the 2 floppy other bits ( reset button and old power supply), they made them the same length so they will jam up in the hole.My plan is to get some threaded rode 2ft long, about 10-12mm diameter, and epoxy a male RJ45 connector onto the end and use that to pull the female connect through.how did you get on?

I prefer getting the fish wire through first & pulling the cable through as then it is less likely to bend as you are pushing it in regards Terry,

Building Regulations 2000, Approved Document C, 2004 Edition, Section 5: Walls, paragraph 5.13 b and NHBC Standards state that no cables other than electricity meter tails are to be located in the cavity of an external wall

It might be just slightly unsightly, however, Why not use a junction box externally to place all the camera wires etc and then you will only need to drill a small hole for the cat5e cable?

This video was a good suggestion but only works if your pulling the wire through a straight hole as opposed to a bend. I tried your method when trying to pull CCTV cable through my loft eaves. Twice the garden wire which was quite strong snapped because of moving it back and forward to get it round a bend. I found the wire although rigid was not flexible like strong string might be.

Push rigid cable through both bricks and then tape wire to the end of the rigid cable then pull it straight through.
