Much better than the FH Review. Couple notes, IMO there is nothing wrong with all fingers under the wing, feels more powerful and control to me and I don't like having the ring and pinky in the way of the disc. I don't try to spin the hammer, just release it like pounding a nail or tossing it, it will spin, and IMO nothing wrong with a heavier hammer or short sledgehammer. kzbin.info/www/bejne/boaTYYmDpL6hgLM#t=1m3s

Just spent 20 mins down the park waiting for the kids and was flicking 150ft. Wobbly still, need to work the hammer and spin, but what a difference, a video watch, 15 mins just practicing grip and flick in the house. Can't wait to see teh improvement as the wrist strengthens and the form improves. Will be watching part 2 when I can stop the wobble!!

I am going to take this tips out to the field and try them out. I am relatively new to disc golf and have only been playing for 6 months but I am for now a forehand dominant player and there isn't a ton of specific info out there on how to train a forehand. There are plenty of videos saying this is how this pro does it but they don't go over many drills you can do to practice them. Nice comprehensive explanation of throwing forehand, you've demonstrated the grip better than anyone else I've seen. The "hammer drill" I've seen in another video from someone in the UK and he had another drill that helped me feel that snap. You take your grip, hold the disc straight out and then drop it straight down and pull it back up as quick as you can. When you get comfortable doing that than you lift the disc up at the start with the angle on your wrist and do the same thing. I would do a few of those before I threw the disc, I wound up throwing longer than my backhand using very little arm motion. Still working on it as the feeling is intermittent but I'll get there some day. Been playing a ~4 - 5 months. One thing to note about the hammer throw is to lead with the handle - just like you teach someone swinging a baseball bat.

I wish more people would do tutorials like this by having someone that isnt very experienced in the throw and teaching them step by step. its easy to tell someone what to do and then repeat it yourself as you already have it down but i feel like showing someone of my skill level what to do and then trying it out helps that much more. I would like to see even someone more inexperienced though that has virtually no forehand at all and see how that goes but great video.

I wrote down all the key elements (okay, I probable missed one or more) and went to the local park and made tremendous progress, considering today was day one of forehand. I used mostly stable mids, as the drivers kept bombing out like my backhand did at the start. All great advice. I may be an outlier but my ring finger and pinky finger do not touch the disc. I feel like that inhibits snap just a tiny bit. Everything else is as you described. I have great angle control and what I would consider to be an elite forehand touching distances out around 475’ with halo destroyers. Thank you very much for this (and the other) explanations! I often try to throw the FH, but if with the lighter discs I succeed in throwing straight (only sometimes I throw them too much on the left), with the heavier discs they slip on the right, also when I try to maintain a quite tight grip...
@OverthrowDiscGolf3 жыл бұрын
The grip could possibly be too tight. Just needs to be firm enough so the disc doesn’t move around inside it. Might need to work with the lighter discs until you start generating a little more arm speed. Nothing wrong with that!

@@OverthrowDiscGolf, thank you very much! I'd had another question: the feeling on the hand. I found that in some cases I feel much more the snap on the two fingers on the inside rim; other times I feel more the passing of the disc on the part of the palm at the base of the thumb (I found that the name of this part is Thenar eminence) and also in this second case I feel more the 'cooperation' of the entire hand to the throw and a lower strain. What could be the cause of the difference between these two sensations?
@OverthrowDiscGolf3 жыл бұрын
@@albertoquagliaroli4230 not entirely sure to be honest with you. Obviously it could be coming out different but what usually happens in sports is that your body only realizes one feeling at a time. For example, maybe you focused on how your hand felt on one throw and your body didn’t give you the mental feedback of how the hand felt. That spin off the index and thumb just clicked so much. So I came back for the forehand videos because mine is awful lol. I am super wobbly, short and go back and forth from high, wobbly and big left to right and just spiking it l, going straight left. A big question I have is how much finger manipulation do you with the index and middle fingers at the release? Or do your fingers not really move at all?

Hey Josh, Great content as usual. Do you bring arm back with wrist fully cocked and move forward with a static wrist. I'm trying to equate it to back hand where if my wrist is loose, then it can kind of bend inward then move outward. I'm trying to stay loose on forehand but I stiffen the arm and then the disc just turns over on anhyser. especially putters. Ugh.

Personally, I prefer 10 minute videos. With that being said I believe the energy created is momentum. You can’t just explode, both back hand and sidearm, at the start of the throw. You got to work up to it depending on the pace of your run up and how far you want to throw. Just like the pivot on the backhand throw is momentum management the hit for the sidearm is the same in that your managing and adding momentum. Any jerky movements and spike in effort can throw off momentum. Instead, only add to the momentum and guide it.

Would there be any advantage to using a small 1.25 to 2.5 lb barbell weight instead of the hammer? I'm thinking you could grip it more like the disk, but don't know if losing leverage from the hammer handle is good or bad for drill purposes. It will also be more difficult to see rotation of the barbell disc, but a tape or paint stripe should take care of that issue.

@OverthrowDiscGolf3 жыл бұрын
Tough one. I know some people that throw two backhands. The issue with two backhands is that it negates the extra reach you get with a forehand. That becomes a problem in trouble situations where it would be best to stretch out right. Maybe try to develop that side of your body. You could swing a baseball bat on that side as a way to develop it. If you feel like you have no chance then you’d have to learn a BH on both sides but see if you can make progress with a little work before ruling it out completely
