I was a pitcher in baseball and always threw a football with the same finishing motion or flick finishing with thumb up. I never realized the motion of flicking thumb down towards crotch was the proper way to throw a football...63 years old and still learning....thanks for the insight!!!

I'm so glad that Warren Moon got a mention, for my money and along with Dan Marino; he was the best QB never to have won a Super Bowl ring. Who doesn't love this guy; he's such a font of knowledge and a great communicator. If more teachers were like JT O'Sullivan perhaps we'd have a higher standard of QB?

That index release is perfect for accuracy, too. Ive taught both my sons to think of the index point being where you want the ball to go. I had someone teach me years ago and he threw a ridiculously beautiful spiral and had crazy arm strength. Spent multiple years throwing with him and would spend hours perfecting accuracy, timing, etc.

I played football for what seems like a billion years. I played QB and occasionally played some DB. My advice would be to practice throwing a football. It is different when compared to throwing a baseball. A football is thrown with the hand having a kind of "karate chop" motion whereas a baseball throw has the palm facing the target. The football is not resting on the palm during the throw. It is actually something of a bizarre question to ask in that and makes me wonder if the person has ever tried throwing a football.

Maybe u can answer this for me. I throw a good sprial have a good arm, but why is it when I throw a deep ball, when it starts to descend the nose of the ball turns to the right (I'm right handed) instead of nose diving. Any chance u know why?

Just a commentary. Remember the position of the reference lines that college footballs have? Well, I remember as a kid that Troy Aikman said that his main grip was index and thumb around those reference lines and every other finger placed over the laces to have a good grip as a whole. I myself had problems with that because my palm hands are not like a square, they are more like a pentagon, wider in the middle finger and narrower in the little and index fingers. I found more problems because as I've said I was a kid, and now as an adult I am about the size of Doug Flutie so my palms are not as big as the palms of a 6' 4 monster. If you manage to keep your shoulder below an imaginary line that your elbow would trace in relation to the horizon, I mean by the time you are gaining momentum in your arm, once you turn back to the grip showed here you'll feel a lot more comfortable throwing. Also I'd like to mention one more thing, Pedro Martinez, a HOF pitcher recommends that you finish the movement of your arm as something incredibly important, if it happens that you find an obstacle that doesn't allow you to complete the natural movement of your arm you better get rid of it. The juicy part of the latter is that by "finishing" the throw you avoid a lot of force applied in your shoulder, you know, like a "full swing" of your arm. Another good tip by him about why is important to keep the elbow above the shoulder is because that way you avoid to mess with your elbow ligaments. The last two aspects are just to keep you healthy. First time that I see one of your videos, happy to be here, thanks for the good work.

We had a problem with throwing 'dying ducks'. The other day, we thought that, if we made a small adjustment and canted the throwing hand a small fraction on an inch to the right, not to the left, then we could likely solve the problem. We did so and threw the ball. To our amazement, the ball zipped through the air, hit the ground about 18 yards away, and spun like a top! No more 'dying ducks'! Problem solved!
