Excellent lesson Sifu. I was just working heavily on my rear (left) punch because my right elbow is injured - great timing on publishing this. Thanx.

-The snap of the body upon throwing the rear punch looks like a shoulder fake. -In my opinion, the vertical punch is most effective because the elbow is much closer to the body unlike a horizontal punch. again, thanks for the free lesson sifu.

This may be a technique beyond Dan's skill range, from what I've seen of his kicks I don't think he has that one down yet (could be wrong). I was a TKD national champ in my teens and this as well as the spinning back kick with straight leg all the way round is a basic kick in TKD that Bruce would have learned from someone like Jhoon Rhee or Chuck Norris (all Wing Chun kicks are below the belt). The spinning back hook kick (like 'dragon whips his tail' in the film) is a very standard type of kick common to some forms of Kung Fu, Karate, Tae Kwon Do, modern kick-boxing etc. It is far more powerful with the back of the heel than slapping with the underside of the foot. You basically chamber the leg like you would for a Tae Kwon Do head high spinning back thrust kick but keep spinning around rather than thrust forward and snap the leg out and then back in again. It is good to use a target. I fill plastic bottles with water or suspend a tennis ball or something similar like a small target bag. You need to be able to kick at least as high or higher than your head so need to be flexible enough and try the target at about shoulder height or a little lower first until you get the feel of it. You need to slightly drop the upper body back and down a bit and keep looking back over your shoulder to spot the target as you spin. When you get really good at it you don't need to spot the target as much because your foot will automatically hit the target from where you've focused before spinning. Just remember to keep the leg chambered and bent in while spinning then let it lengthen just as you have gone through 180 degrees of the 360 degree spin, then fold it back agin (bending your kicking legs knee to comp[ete the spin and then plant your kicking foot where it started from). Do it at a medium pace then speed it up as you become more confident. When you speed up you might find yourself spinning too far, it is good to have a small target dangling to get used to hitting something. If you do this at a large bag you will just stop and not be able to spin all the way round without withdrawing the leg or even lose balance completely and almost fall over. Get used to striking that too because it is useful to know how to quickly recover from varying resistance. That kick is designed to snap round and take out your opponents head and relies on speed and surprise. It can be a very effective knock out blow when mastered. In JKD a more favoured variant of this is essentially the same head high kick incorporating the forward burst but executed with the front leg in the same motion without spinning back (much quicker), in this case you just have to just lean back with a bit of skip-like footwork, it will work with the so-called 'pendulum' step as well.

I’ve been training in Karate for 6-7 years now I can explain it to you since Bruce took some of his hich kicks from Karate. You can do it from either a normal Boxing stance, southpaw or orthodox (depending on your lead leg). I’ll explain doing it from the side stance (lead leg stance) since it is commonly used in TKD and Karate and also because Bruce Lee used it in his movies. I have a ball with a string attached to it which I use to practice with. Start with the kick low first and don’t worry too much about height. The height will come once you master the kick. Work on technique before going for speed and power. Hitting with the heal provides more power than slapping with the foot. Pivoting is something that you will come with the kick. Pivoting on the ball of your foot is what you should be doing. I don’t recommend practicing on a sticky surface as it will be complex and bad when you practice. This isn’t an easy kick like a Mei Giri (front kick) you must practice this every day and you’ll get the hang of it. Forgot to say while you spin remember to spot your target. Also lean a bit so you can reach head heighjt.

Great video. I can see how the body mechanics really help with the power of the punch. I have studied the basics of JKD but I'm no expert. I learned basic footwork and punching as well as self defense techniques from a video called Bruce Lee fighting method with Ted Wong and Richard Bustillo. This is a random question but Dan if you had the privilege to speak to Bruce Lee, what is the one question that you would ask him? Also if Bruce Lee was here today, what do you think his opinion on MMA would be?

many thanks genius dan lok! the truth that very good technique, very effective. Now, with the hip movement, I think it should be like a rotating ege for any blow, do not you think? I wanted to tell him that the fist bump that my teacher taught me once is the full revolving blow. that comes to be like a bullet hit. when throwing the blow, it turns completely and when it hits it hurts a little differently than a blow. very good video dan lok. @FrancisMaxino
@FrancisMaxino 6 жыл бұрын
Yes there is, it is included in the weapons and tools of JKD in Tao but leaping and jumping kicks aren't favoured in the philosophy due to the vulnerability it leaves you in while in the air. If anything one would use it as a finishing kick and probably to the chest or neck or chin height.
