One thing I noticed is on your reach back you still hold the disc on hyzer and then correct it to flat on your pull through. You’ll get a smoother throw if you have the disc level on your reach back and level on your follow thru. It’s the same idea of your follow thru being the same as the angle of your disc. Having it on the same angle all the way through will make it smoother. Just wanted to say, loved the video! And I hope this can help you!

Yup. Keeping that throwing arm across your upper torso from reach back to follow through is key. It's more about posture

Helpful Footwork Tip: You're rotating too soon/too much on your plant-foot (i.e. Lisa Fajkus). This is preventing you from bracing your front leg (offering resistance) long enough so all the power from your lower body can be transferred upwards to your arm/disc. The energy you create during the x-step & reach-back is being dissipated by your early foot rotation (opening of the hips). If you're falling forward and off the tee during follow through, you're doing it wrong (unless you're James Conrad). You still have a ton of unrealized power that is not being optimized.

As a new player of about 3 months, this is probably THE most useful mechanics breakdown I've seen, and I've watched HOURS of videos!! I am currently a predominantly forehand thrower, only because I'm devastatingly inconsistent with my backhand. Problem is, I'm tearing up my elbow from my baseball playing days! This actually allows me to work on each aspect of the backhand. Great work!

You mentioned about thinking through all of the steps when throwing and I have found that it definitely can mess a person up. I try to clear my mind and launch without over thinking what I am doing. One of the best things I heard about "reach back" is to think of it less of reaching back, but more about moving around the disc and when your arm ends up being fully extended, that's when you want your timing to line up so you can snap. Scott stokely did a cool video on "snap" that really helped to simplify what is often so over complicated. Also I'm jealous because it's been -18 and snowy where I'm at...

awesome. Thanks for showing the whole process and including the "errors" or things that didn't fully improve. I can't stand that most disc golf videos ONLY show what you're supposed to do and the "good" example of it. it helps to see when something doesn't work and pointing it out then explaining why it didn't work right. I also watched Philo's video and the neutral body position thing was the biggest help for me. My shoulders and hips were pointed to the sky at release and I NEVER even realized it even when trying to throw it low down hill. I'll have to try the follow-through tip as well.

great video. looking forward to the OAT one. the follow through thing is huge. when I first realized that the disc's angle matches the follow through, I started paying attention to pro tournament footage. you can watch their follow through only, and if it's a fairly neutral disc at that speed, it will always match and you can know the flight just from the follow through. it's like when simon lizotte said he can tell if someone throws far just by looking at their feet.

Its so great to see personal growth! I'm really excited for you. As far as reach back is concerned, Ezra Aderhold had a video in which he states that when you start your Xstep, you leave your disc in place, so that when you physically step forward, your disc does not leave that space until you snap your hips.(basically) your disc from x-step to twist is in the same spot, your body is what moves forward, creating an "explosive elastic" maneuver in your arm. This also was said to prevent "rounding" in your throw.

This might actually be the video that fixed mine as well. I have a similar problem. I can hit the backhand hyzer lines, but straight and flat isn’t in my repertoire. Usually lean towards forehands if the backhand line screams early tree. I always miss to the right cause my body plays the hyzer but on tunnel shots in the North Carolina woods, sometimes you don’t even have time to let one flip up flat, it’s gotta come out flat. think the body position (leaning too forward) and the arm angle (following through flat) will benefit me the most. Great vid!

I loved watching this you made a lot of improvements. Though one thing that I think is attributing to your off axis torque is when you reach back you reach down at an angle then as you pull through you have to lift up your arm to flat which is causing more a tourquey form. For example if you watch eagle throw in slo motion he reaches straight back and the disc stays the same height off the ground. When I was working on my form what i always thought about was once my back foot planted during my x step I would try and keep the disc in the same spot above the ground until my reach back peaked when my front foot planted then I would pull through. Hope that helps keep up the great work 🙂

I like the callouts to each video for the different days, that was a nice touch. The footwork day seemed to prove that unless you're doing something egregious or painful, don't force a change; Comfort and repeatability are key! Fundamentals are great but there's a reason everyone does things differently. Footwork is a great example of that with the differences in x steps, run ups, walk ups, crow hops, etc. Also, been seeing your stickers and discs making their way into other disc golf videos around KZbin, even saw a recycled disc on an in the bag! Awesome.

I am by no means trying to claim anything more than the "I like to play" ability, but I noticed something we used to have in common, Your plant foot is going too far in front of your body, so your rotation is coming from your off hip. Giving you that hardcore body spin after the release. I found that stepping further to the right of my body(towards the basket) kept my hips from turning away as far in my reach back, which had a few forced corrections. such as 1. my right hip moves backward instead of my left hip going around. 2 greater separation between my hips and shoulders with less extension of my arm during reach back, 3. better accuracy and distance with less upper body exertion. Sounds crazy but the "Uncoiling" has become entirely automatic. You can feel the natural "push back" from your plant leg into your hip. Hope it helps!

For those with less time, a good teacher should be able to see the 2 of 4 changes that panned out pretty quickly. Also- 80 Crows excellent tip about follow through angle: This pairs perfectly with a more widely known tip at the beginning of the shot. Dipping your torso a bit early will produce the higher follow thru hyzer. Standing up a bit straighter will produce that lower follow through anhi.

Love seeing the progress on throwing straight! I've grown up playing in the woods so it just seems normal for me to do and I struggle with getting distance sometimes because of throwing such tight areas all the time. You may have figured this out by now but a big tip I got was to look at my elbow when I'm lining up my throw. It works like this get your elbow on your line and keep your eye on your target, then when you reach back let your lead shoulder push your head so that you are almost looking down your arm in the reach back then pull through. this keeps your shoulders and your elbow in the straight line and will make consistently hitting your line easier. Check out foundation disc golfs video on backhand form its one of the best videos even though its supposed to be for beginners there are a lot of tips in there more advanced players can use.

To help integrate the 4 things you mention try interleaving. Isolation, practicing one skill only will make you good at the one thing in the specific situation. Interleaving is varying the skill with each throw. First follow through; next pullback; etc. The throws might look poor but what you are doing is blending them and this will integrate them into the newer desired skillset much faster than sticking to isolation training. Another way to interleave is varying the disc, tee-pad, terrain, footing, while working on the desired skill. To throw level from uneven terrain is much more difficult than doing this from a level parking lot. Great video and thanks for sharing your journey

Great video! Neutral body position and follow through are really all you need. Reachback is huge misconseption and many pros say its not even a real thing. Ofcourse if you round over your body it will cause some inconsistency and if you start too low it will cause disc to nose up. But with your power of hitting 500 feet accurately I wouldnt even bother thinking it since to accually throw that far you need some height in your throw and to my eye it was perfect. You have so good form already. Those 2 things arent even a change in form, you just align yourself for different throw than hyzer. Great job!

The thing about planting your foot in a straight shot is that if you have that neutral body position down, you naturally plant more flat on the ground. If you try having your body leaned back on a anhyzer throw and try to plant more on your toes, that is not going to feel comfortable at all.

I felt like that video really changed how I thought about my reachback and helped the consistency.

This video was amazingly helpful. The next weekend after I watched it, I threw the highest rated round I have ever thrown. Funny thing is I used the information to throw everything on hyzer which was so useful. lol. Thank you!

Yeah, I'm with you. I think I've only thrown one decent backhand flex shot ever because I cannot throw anny. Thankfully, I throw forehand a lot but it's definitely a huge weakness in my game. Thanks for the tips and inspiration!

I didn't mention it in the video, but I'm the same way! For a while I was ok not having it, but I'd rather have multiple tools to throw the same shot. (For example: maybe I want the disc to land with backhand spin, but it's a shot I would normal throw forehand, or vice versa.)

Those tips were great! It gave me lots to think about in my game. And, as you said, I'm going to work on just one piece at a time. Once that gets more consistent, then I'll look for the next piece to work on. By the way, the one thing that I noticed on your reach back is that, sometimes the disc would be in line with your belly at full extent, which might explain the tendency for the hyzer. Or, maybe not. Thanks for the clinic !!
