Yes, lots of ways, and most not documented during war time. Having the rope core one tied around the sides of the throat is a mild form of protection in an otherwise usually exposed area. If your enemy knows where and how it's tied, they know where the weaker areas would be. Sure it's not mail or plate but it could be the difference between a deep cut and a more superficial one if you're lucky.

You are welcome. There is always something new to learn. There are so many ways to tie a kabuto I don't know them all, and I have had one for more than 10 years now.

What's the best tie method if the menpo does not have hooks? Thanks.
@SamuraiJames8 ай бұрын
There is a "box knot" type of tying where one part of the cord is under the mempo, and another comes in front under the lip and above the chin. That would be my preference since it will hold it in place a bit better. Quite a few options without the hook, and really any of them would work, some just work better than others if there is no hook to hold it in place. The other half of that equation is the kabuto - one with four or five mounting points for the cord rather than the common three would also help keep a mempo in place because the tension is distributed on the helmet across more points.

I'll just have to play around and see what holds best. I think I may have a option close to the first one you mentioned. Working pretty good so far. Thank you so much for the information and the videos. Really appreciate it.

Extremely helpful! Thanks so much for this. The cord you're using looks different from the rope that came with my iron mountain armor. Is that a cord you bought elsewhere?
@SamuraiJames2 жыл бұрын
You're welcome, glad it's helpful. It's an Iron Mountain Armory cord, but separate from the armor. It's in their "accessories" section. I bought a few things I'll be putting up reviews of soon; this is one of them. I chose the "rope core" one which is why it's still firm around my chin without the mempo. They also have a padded option, I'd choose that if I was going to wear it without a mempo / hoate / hanbo.

@@SamuraiJames I'd like to find a smaller rope or cord that I could use without a mempo to reduce the bulk in front of my chin. Do you know of any good resources for something that could be used that would be smaller?
@SamuraiJames2 жыл бұрын
Good question. I'd reach out to Iron Mountain and see if they have it with a smaller diameter rope, or if the padded one is smaller. You could also make your own by sewing a narrow tube and stuffing it lightly with cotton batting or similar. Something like Michael's or similar craft store might have a good rope option too. I've heard of silk used for helmet cords historically.

Purchased separately from the armor. I'll have a review of them coming up soon. I think they are new within the last couple years as I don't remember seeing them when I bought this armor a few years ago.
