How to Tie a Surfboard to Roof Racks

Weekend Warrior Outdoors instructions on how to tie down a surfboard onto roof racks using ratchet straps. There are many ways to achieve this and this explains how we tie ours to our car.

Thanks for sharing! Would definitely also recommend either surf pads or a FCS or similar board bag for Highway travel. Towels do work as well but can add some complication!

I got some pool noodles from Walmart and cut down one side to get them on the rack and used zip ties to bind them to the rack. Didn’t make sense to pay 40$+ for simple pads when I could do it for less than 8$ 😂

The fin is technically supposed to be facing forward in case it does slide out, it'll catch on the fin.

Yes. Fins forward. 1st with nose, the rocker , forward it'll act like an airplane wing and cause lift. 2nd if the board slips the fins will stop it from leaving ,sliding off, the racks.

That's how I've been doing it on my car, but now I have a van and it's 2m high and I'm 5'7". I can open the sliding door, step up and reach but it's got to be done from just one side. Any ideas?

Try this instead. Put the straps under the roof rack and run first length down the front of the van and run the other down the back. Should have two equal lengths of strap at either end of van. Put board on, then flick each strap over each of the end and return to the same side of van to strap down. All done from one side of car. This method is used for kayaks as you can't reach over roof.

Yea fins should go in front, if the straps come loose on the highway this keeps the board from flying into the cars behind you

Two things: one, the board should have fins facing the front. And two: there should be pads between the racks and the board. Other than that, I was looking for a quicker way to strap my board, and I liked this method a lot

Has anyone drove on freeway with fins facing the back while securely strapped? I’ve seen surfboards even upper facing, fins down on freeway and looked fine to me.

Yes absolutely. You can use towels. Pool noodles whatever but some kind of padding between the board and the rack but I prefer pads with velcro that you can attach to the rack or maybe some kind of strapping to attach the towel to the the rack. Probably not necessary but I drive on a freeway​@@Variety_Streams

We always put fins up and FORWARD, so there is no chance of boards slipping out through the straps, should they come lose. (If you need to strap down multiple boards: stagger them on top of each other, with a towel between each board, behind lower boards fins).I think lots of people needed this video. Thank you!
