Thank you HUGE - was about to spend $$$ on those silly expense roof racks, don't need it taking out a kayak a few times / year. You helped alot!!!
@nikushim66652 жыл бұрын
Depends on where you're going, foam pads are pretty janky and can do a number on your roof. They are ok for short distances but if your traveling a few hundred miles or more get a proper rack.

I'm having a hard time figuring out if I should strap my kayak hull up or down.. I want to make sure it's secured the best way possible. My friend says hull up with the opening facing the roof, but a lot of videos show either way. Any advice? I have a basic Pelican Mustang kayak
@SwiftCanoeKayak Жыл бұрын
Hull up is more common, but lots of kayaks are transported hull down. It generally comes down to the size/length of the roof and the size/length of the boat. Some cars have a sloping roof that makes the boat only capable of sitting one way without rubbing the roof itself. Some flatter roofs mean you can do either/or. There's no harm in either method as long as the kayak is secure and you won't damage/rub your roof. If you go hull up, make sure your seat is folded down and secured.

So the front loops just prevent wind from lifting? Seems like you’d need something in back too, to prevent slide if stopping short?

Will this type of rack work on cars with frameless windows?? In figure it would as long as the window is slightly open however this can be uncomfortable on higher speeds.
@scottnelle4 ай бұрын
I know this is two years too late, but yes! You can use this with frameless windows and you should still be able to fully close the window. The strap presses into the foam at the top of the door opening just like the window itself.

So, my 8 foot kayak weighs 36 pounds. I did all but no front or back strap(bow/aft). As long as it's secure, can I do a 65 mph on freeway for 10 miles or so without catastrophic issues? I brought it home on a 40mph street from store for about 4 miles, no issues.

@scout question, why no bow lines in the back? Not even 1?
@shithawk892 жыл бұрын
I have done the same with my 10ft 41lb kayak, many times took it on the highway up to 120kmh with just the hull strapped down with ratchets and no slip grip mats on my foam kayak roof carrier. The wind seems to push it down. I have been on the road for up to 45 mins.
@free2beme773 Жыл бұрын
The air stream will lift the front of the boat. Lift from the air stream can rip the kayaks off the roof. I have heard of a roof being torn off a car when someone failed to secure the front end of a cargo box.

can you use this method with 2 kayaks?
@SwiftCanoeKayak3 жыл бұрын
You can, but its rare that two kayaks will sit flat on a roof. Most vehicles aren't wide enough. In most cases one has to be leaned against the other at an angle, which requires a few extra straps and a little more care.

You can get this from Walmart, $25 pretty cheap here in US. I have the same way of transporting, to be honest you could really save money and just buy a foam noodle lol Cut it in half and use it LOL but that’s if you already have straps, The kit it’s self ain’t that bad

@@SwiftCanoeKayak when using these, is it necessary to tie on back as well? Also... Why is the kayak upside down? (New, sorry)
@TheRealGrandadNo13 жыл бұрын
@@OutdoorMishaps The kayak is inverted so that it is stable across the width rather than the kayak possibly being angled due to the keel being more prominent. As for the back, I definitely tie both back and front, takes a minute or so longer but well worth the effort !

I got mine from walmart for about $25. It comes in a mesh bag as a kit that has: two green straps, two of the foam pieces, and one long yellow twisted rope. I purchased two and use it to secure our two kayaks on a buick lacrosse car (no rack). Has worked great all summer so far.

I'd recommend paying a bit more for a kit with longer, wider, lower profile pads with a non-slip backing and more contact area on the roof. These pads can slip when wet (raining or just post paddle) if not strapped tight enough.... I would definitely pay the extra 30 bucks or so if you plan on using it for a long commute. One with both fore and aft tie downs as well. Plus with these low surface area pads it would cause the roof of my sedan to buckle. I made it work for a decade but with a new car it's time for an upgrade.
