I usually see people do the ice dye method for these mandalas. do you notice a difference between the ice and liquid dye techniques for the mandalas? Love your videos, they've helped me really improve my dying skills :)

Thank you so much! I’m really happy to hear that. The main difference with ice dye is that it’s harder to pin point where your colors will expand out. Or I should say how far because the when the ice melts it carries the dye with it. With liquid dye you have more control. For instance if you want to keep a white area white. Hope this helps😊

Im trying to do a mandala but I only have rubberbands. Will this work?

I’ve only tried that one time and I gave up lol. You would have to wrap them super tight without it snapping to even hold it in place. I don’t know if you have any laying around but you could try to tie it up with twine or jute if you haven’t gotten kite string or sinew yet.

Can you fold and tie your tapestry and then soak it in soda ash or does it have to be unfolded?

I wouldn’t recommend it because you want your tapestry damp or even dry when you dye it and it will take forever for that to happen if you do it that way.

Aww thank you so much!!! I use dharma trading company and grateful dyes. Both companies have so many awesome colors and are quality. I have been tying up items and letting them dry out to prevent bleeding. It helps a lot, also, you can make your dye thicker by using sodium alginate. I actually have a video called Riahs tips and tricks where I show you how to make it my way. I really hope this helps 😊

No that’s not a silly question ☺️ I rinse them before I reveal them and then right after the reveal they go into the wash 😁🌈

It would be alot easy to follow a long if when you say fold in half you specify wether to fold in half long ways or short ways because it really makes a difference in the results

You are right however, this tapestry is the same length and height so it actually doesn’t matter in my case. Now if you are folding a tapestry that’s a lot longer than the height then that’s more of a preference thing. Also, this is a mandala so the design literally goes around the tapestry “in a circle” if you will so no matter what way you turn the tapestry it should have come out the exact same. I understand what your saying though and thank you for the comment ☺️❤️

Thanks for sharing your work. I use kite string as well as dental floss. The kite string gives you the white lines that you were talking about and I use the dental floss for small folds or childrens clothing. Again, thanks for sharing your work!

I tried this but my yellow dye was HORRIBLE! It was so runny that even a single tiny drop from a hook tip syringe flooded multiple cells. I'm no noob to tie dye. This was a definite dye problem. Even worse, I don't think that the One Step Tulip yellow had ANY soda ash in it as it was supposed to, because that yellow washed right out. The other colors held, but where the yellow flooded into other colors, it's completely muddy. I tested that yellow with some blue to see if it would create a decent green. I applied one drop of the mix to a scrap of T shirt fabric (100% cotton, dye ready) and I ended up with a blob of muddy blue surrounded by a ring of yellow, and this was after mixing the colors in the bottle. I've never had that happen before so apparently it was a bad batch. Nonetheless, my work was ruined. I'll stick with ordering from Dharma or Grateful Dyes in Colorado, or if I must use a locally bought dye... I can get some of the Jacquard brand. I don't mind doing the soda ash soak for 15 minutes, and the colors do come up better. Tulip is no longer one of my brands, after this!

I’m so sorry to hear that and I completely agree. I have had some luck with tulip in the past and still use on the rare occasion but I definitely recommend Dharma and grateful dyes. Now when I do use tulip I still pre-soak in soda ash just to be safe. I’m sorry your project was ruined though. That’s always a bummer😞

You definitely can! Silk is a natural fiber and will take the dye. I would just check to see if it’s a blend of silk and something else or 100% silk. Hope this helps😊🌈

You’re very welcome and I’m sorry for that. Yeah the most important thing is to follow the folds and make sure you find your center. If you choose the wrong corner for the center the mandalas will be facing out or backwards😊💜

Hi thank you for your question! You can but the colors tend to bleed more because you can’t get them as tight as sinew. However, if you do use the rubber bands you could either try to keep the colors away from each other or put each color over top of the next just a little bit so they blend and make more pretty colors 😊 I hope this helps! I have found that it’s better to tie up while damp but to actually let the material dry out before dyeing. This goes for liquid and Ice. For reverse dyeing I’ve found that the bleach takes better when the material is wet. If you’re reverse Tie dyeing (adding color after the bleach part is done) I would apply the color with the material dry just like regular dyeing😊
