I'm at 3:30 of the vid, and I make a TON of these. It is my favorite Tie Dye fold to make. My first piece of advice is dont start out with such tiny folds. They are really hard to do, and you can really frustrate yourself. Try making the first loop small and let them get longer as you go. It is easier to do, and you wont get frustrated. At 4:00 I am one of those screaming about the sinew because it is going to be so hard to unwind when you are rinsing. I am VERY HAPPY you are trying it! I really dont have a game plan when I do them...and I usually do them on tapestry size fabric. I do a zig zag all the way up. At 7:50 you got it! Big fabric you can do big things! It's really hard if you dont plan which way your sinew is going to get a continuous thread. It makes it a lot easier to get the sinew off. I don't think I have ever ice dyed a mandala. Ok...commentary on folds over 😁😁😁

Very pretty Steph 👍 I would’ve been terrified to tie that small point on rayon..the mandala center looks great! And don’t lead folks to think that you’re inexperienced with this sort of thing..your beautiful purple/green one-sided mandala shirt is something I’m still trying to replicate. One of the “therapy” aspects of tie dye that I employ and enjoy is simply taking a break. Sometimes you gotta walk away from a project to get a clearer idea of what it wants to do. It really worked for this piece!

Well, it was my first one… The rayon is pretty sturdy on this one. Are you referring to the hemostat shirt. That is a pretty one. Sometimes walking away helps. Especially if you’re becoming frustrated. Tie dyeing is supposed to be fun. 😁❤️🌈

(I'm still trying to figure out the fold that got the pale green and blue flowers🧐🧐🧐 ) Have you ever worked with Bamboo Rayon? I swear it feels just like silk. I have used it in quilt batting and it is so soft.

You're making my Saturday so Wonderful Steph! Wahooo, so inspired, I'm going to make my 3rd tapestry today ;) I've much to work on, especially my sinew tightening. Perhaps I have an inferior brand, or maybe it's just my inexperience? Either way, it hasn't slowed me down or bummed me out, simply learning experiences. Although, my first two came out pretty fantastic! IMO, hehe. Seeing Amazing tie lines that you've created leaves me wanting to improve my skill set, makes me anxious to make more. There is A Lot to love about this piece, hope you're proud of it, it's wonderful!

For this tutorial it’s all right there. Every step. Watch it a few more times. I watched Riah’s tutorials for a year over and over until I felt ready. Maybe 10 times each. This is beautiful.❤ I recently tried to do this mandala design on a duvet cover, and ran into saturation issues due to the thickness of the fabric. Have you ever tried to re-tie anything large like this and redo the dye to deepen the color? Do you think it would be possible or even work? Please let me know if it sounds like something I can try.🥰

I’m sorry to hear of your saturation issues. I hate it when that happens. I have not tried to re-tie an intricate pattern like this. My fear would be making it look worse. I have done “over-dye” projects where I turn the whole thing into something else. Keep in mind if you do try and re-tie your duvet cover you need to start from scratch. Pre-wash (get all soaps and fabric softeners out) soak in soda ash (own bucket of SA to avoid dye leaching to other blanks - toss after) then tie and dye. It’s hard to say without seeing your project. We are our own worst critics. Your duvet is probably beautiful!! You can share it in the Facebook group for advice. Liquid? Not completely. I did a couple recently. I just don’t enjoy it like I do ice dyeing. I’m into dyeing for the colors and liquid doesn’t stimulate my brain the same as ice dyeing. Plus mixing liquid is so terrible. I will have some more coming up though. Summer is coming and everyone will be looking to learn. ❤️🌈
