I have had better results with letting the dyed shirt sit in a closed container in a warm room for at least 24 hours than with microwaving. I generally apply the Color Stay after the shirt has set for 24 hours, then I let the shirt sit overnight. That has led to vibrant colors. When I microwaved the shirt and immediately washed it, the dye turned out pretty dull, but sometimes that is the desired effect. Microwaving can also be messy, as the dye juices can bubble up and bleed into other parts of the shirt, or leak into the microwave itself.

Just did this yesterday. The first set I used the measurements rit fixative and everything bled through. The shirts are still nice. For the second batch I increased it to 1.5 tablespoons per 1 cup of water and the white parts stayed white! I'm super Happy! Oh I also left the dye over night. I forgot to put a napkin in one of the bags and the colors sort of blended together on one side. But it still came out nice! Thanks for the tutorial!

Good question! Heat is needed at some point in the process. That is what opens up the fibers in the fabric to accept the dye. So if you didn't want to use your microwave and leaving the fabric outside wasn't an option, you could actually fill the bottles with really hot water. If you go this route, you may want to hold the bottles with an oven mitt since they may be too hot to hold.

Tulip dye now offers the microwave containers for the 2 minute and 30 second tie dye....and it works pretty well. .I guess it's the new thing. Just be sure it's still fully wet/damp or it can scorch. Tulip dye says it's only for 100% cotton items. I am trying to find out how long to set the dye if I don't use the microwave. (Rit website also says you can sit it in the sun for an hour if no microwave...but would some other source heat set it, is what I want to know.) The microwave idea is for quick reveals. You don't have to wait overnight or the 6 or 8 hours Tulip suggests. You can microwave and cool it for fifteen minutes (with Tulip) and then start your rinse out.

You only need to wait a few minutes for the fabric to cool before rinsing in cold water. Have fun and good luck!
@erinescence20954 жыл бұрын
I think you're waiting for it to be cool enough to handle comfortably, so not long. The items will be extremely hot when you first take them out of the microwave because they were so wet. Might even want to leave them there (with the microwave off) for a minute or so in order to prevent burns--especially if you are doing this project with kids. Even when the edges feel cool, it's still going to be hot inside the rubber banded portions.

Was worried the polyester in the sweatshirt might melt if I microwaved it. I had considered leaving it in my black car in the sun, as the interior gets quite hot. But it was too late in the day for that to really work. Ended up using a hand-held blow dryer on the sweatshirt for about 15 minutes after I'd put the Fixative on it. Worked really well! The color held and the white parts even stayed white! Should note that I did use hot water in every step along the way (to mix the dye, with the fixative) as well. For all items, i used the liquid Rit made for natural fabrics.

What happens if we don’t apply the dye fixative?
@ritcolorcommunity4 жыл бұрын
Fixative is used to help retain color but if you don't apply, you'll still see the same great results.

So I tie dyed a bunch of shirts, can I put them in the wash all together? Or I have to wash each shirt separately in cold water?
@LilGagaChick4 жыл бұрын
Separate
@abbibutton4 жыл бұрын
I put mine all together & they worked fine
@ritcolorcommunity4 жыл бұрын
Hi! Please wash them separately. If you don't the unabsorbed dye might bleed onto the other shirts. All you need is one cycle with the speed wash setting!

Can I use a regular laundry detergent or would you recommend Dawn soap or something else

Either will work!

Would using my conventional oven be okay to use as well? Warm setting for 2 minutes? 🤔
@monstershayne4 жыл бұрын
Wondering the same thing, I noticed that when you microwave it, dark dye can evaporate onto the plastic wrap and then get onto places that it's not meant to be.
@ritcolorcommunity4 жыл бұрын
Good question! And yes you can! Please make sure it is wet when doing this. Set the oven to 200°F and leave the item in for five minutes. Also, don’t walk away from the oven just in case!

Worked perfectly! Thank you!!

How long does the dye last in the bottle? Can it be saved for another use?
@ritcolorcommunity4 жыл бұрын
Rit has an unlimited shelf life. When storing liquid dyes, be sure the cap is secure to prevent evaporation. Powder dyes should be stored in a cool, dry place. If you want to store powder dye after it has been mixed with water, you can do so in an airtight container.

No salt is needed in a squirt bottles? Thank you

Hi Keti! We recommend adding 1 tablespoon of salt to your squirt bottle dyes. You can find our complete squirt bottle tutorial here: www.ritdye.com/techniques/tie-dye/squirt-bottle-technique/

So when you wash it in the washing machine, are you supposed to use any detergent? Or is it just cold water and the towel to soak up the dye that bleeds off?
@ritcolorcommunity4 жыл бұрын
You can use detergent too.

So I did all the things it said, including the fixative, and when I washed it, my white parts weren’t white. I did red and blue for 4th of July and now the white parts are purple 😭. Where did I go wrong? If I just want them for one day could I just air dry? I never have luck when I throw them in the wash.
@ritcolorcommunity4 жыл бұрын
Sorry about that! It sounds like there was unabsorbed dye still on the fabric that came off in the wash and went into the white areas. The best way to prevent this is to rinse really really well with cold water before the wash while the fabric is still bound up.

Hi there! Is there a certain way to tie dye with Rit DyeMore? I want to only make certain parts of my hoodie grey but leave some of the white. Any help please? Thank you!
@ritcolorcommunity4 жыл бұрын
If you are trying to tie dye with DyeMore, you will need to use the immersion method as DyeMore needs to be added to very hot water on the stovetop. You can learn more here: www.ritdye.com/techniques/tie-dye/immersion-technique/

I am sorry to hear that! This could either be because the fabric is synthetic or because heat isn't being applied. We can do some troubleshooting with you if you email us at the contact form on our website!

Will the dye stain the squeeze bottle?
@ritcolorcommunity3 жыл бұрын
Hi there! That all depends on what type of squeeze bottle you’re using. We recommend testing it on a small section first and cleaning the bottle thoroughly right after dyeing.

Do you wash it with the rubber bands on?
@ritcolorcommunity4 жыл бұрын
You keep the rubber bands on during the rinse process. Once the rinse water runs clear, then you can remove the rubber bands and wash with a mild detergent.

So why are soap and salt not used for this method ?
@ritcolorcommunity3 жыл бұрын
The soap is helpful when doing an immersive dye technique to get even coverage on the entire fabric, not totally necessary for the squeeze bottle method. Adding salt is also an optional step that helps the dye to penetrate the fabric, but there's already salt within our liquid formula! Hope this helps!

I did the scrunched technique with the color graphite. And some of the colored parts came out yellow after washing... any idea what could of caused it?? TIA!
@ritcolorcommunity4 жыл бұрын
Hello, Napua. Yellow areas happen when the color seperates. There are a few ways to prevent this in the future. - Start with a dry shirt - Use less dye - Add more heat - Rinse well - Wash on cold right after dyeing We hope these tips are helpful for future dye projects.

Should we do 1 tbsp of dye if we want like a pastel color?
@ritcolorcommunity4 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can start with a smaller amount of dye if you want a lighter color. Test the color before dyeing with a piece of paper towel. If the color is too light, add a little more dye. If the color is too dark, add more water.

I have onesies with the metal clasps, what can I do instead of microwaving? There’s no sun outside either 😕
@ritcolorcommunity3 жыл бұрын
If a microwave is not available, your item is too large, or your item contains metal; you can use a hair dryer to apply heat. Slowly apply heat by passing the hair dryer back and forth across the item about 2-3 inches from the surface. Do this process for about 2 minutes per side. If your item large or thick increase the time on each side.
@mertmert7804 жыл бұрын
Is the microwave part necessary or can they just sit in a grocery bag overnight? We always do shirts on vacation and obviously it was cancelled this year, so I have about 8 people making shirts.. it’d be easier to send them home with their own bag and let them do the washing rather than running 1 washer 8 times 🤪
@ritcolorcommunity4 жыл бұрын
Heat needs to be applied at some point! It opens up the fibers in the fabric to accept the dye. If you don't have a microwave, then you could leave the dyed fabric out in the hot sun for a few hours (if it's sunny and hot). That would probably be the easiest approach! You could also use hot water in your squeeze bottles.

What about dye more the same thing?
@ritcolorcommunity4 жыл бұрын
You can tie-dye with DyeMore for Synthetics, but the process is different. You'll need to do it on your stove to get really hot water. Check out the 'Immersion Method' instructions on our site for full step-by-steps.
