I have had better results with letting the dyed shirt sit in a closed container in a warm room for at least 24 hours than with microwaving. I generally apply the Color Stay after the shirt has set for 24 hours, then I let the shirt sit overnight. That has led to vibrant colors. When I microwaved the shirt and immediately washed it, the dye turned out pretty dull, but sometimes that is the desired effect. Microwaving can also be messy, as the dye juices can bubble up and bleed into other parts of the shirt, or leak into the microwave itself.

I did this but I think the fact that it sat so long let the dye soak in to the white parts, you can kinda tell it's tie dye but not really. It looks cool but I think I should've followed the video so it didn't have time to soak through the shirt

Just did this yesterday. The first set I used the measurements rit fixative and everything bled through. The shirts are still nice. For the second batch I increased it to 1.5 tablespoons per 1 cup of water and the white parts stayed white! I'm super Happy! Oh I also left the dye over night. I forgot to put a napkin in one of the bags and the colors sort of blended together on one side. But it still came out nice! Thanks for the tutorial!

@@caitlynroberts3100 I think I left it sitting. I made so many shirts. The only color that bled through regardless of the fixative was the red. My last technique was me basically, Prewash shirts Dye them leave them in a plastic bag overnight with tissue then add fixative Then microwave Rinse and then wash. The shirts that I kept are still good but I wash in cold water. I’ve seen some that I made on others and they faded but I think it’s cuz they wash with hot water like when they do their laundry.

Good question! Heat is needed at some point in the process. That is what opens up the fibers in the fabric to accept the dye. So if you didn't want to use your microwave and leaving the fabric outside wasn't an option, you could actually fill the bottles with really hot water. If you go this route, you may want to hold the bottles with an oven mitt since they may be too hot to hold.

Tulip dye now offers the microwave containers for the 2 minute and 30 second tie dye....and it works pretty well. .I guess it's the new thing. Just be sure it's still fully wet/damp or it can scorch. Tulip dye says it's only for 100% cotton items. I am trying to find out how long to set the dye if I don't use the microwave. (Rit website also says you can sit it in the sun for an hour if no microwave...but would some other source heat set it, is what I want to know.) The microwave idea is for quick reveals. You don't have to wait overnight or the 6 or 8 hours Tulip suggests. You can microwave and cool it for fifteen minutes (with Tulip) and then start your rinse out.

After removing the item from the microwave, how long must I wait for it to cool down before rinsing in cold water?
@ritcolorcommunity
@ritcolorcommunity 4 жыл бұрын
You only need to wait a few minutes for the fabric to cool before rinsing in cold water. Have fun and good luck!
@erinescence2095
@erinescence2095 4 жыл бұрын
I think you're waiting for it to be cool enough to handle comfortably, so not long. The items will be extremely hot when you first take them out of the microwave because they were so wet. Might even want to leave them there (with the microwave off) for a minute or so in order to prevent burns--especially if you are doing this project with kids. Even when the edges feel cool, it's still going to be hot inside the rubber banded portions.

I have seen or read where some people add salt to Rit dye. What is this for and is it necessary?
@ritcolorcommunity
@ritcolorcommunity 3 жыл бұрын
When cotton yarn or fabrics are dyed, salt is added to the dye bath as a mordant to help the fibers absorb the dye. It's not totally necessary but helps to fix the dye into the fabric. Hope this helps!

will this dye work with 50% cotton and 50% polyester? i’m okay with it being less vibrant but will the dye still work? also can i leave it out in the sun instead of microwaving it because it has some metal on it?

I used Rit Dye yesterday to do a cotton t-shirt, some socks and a Hanes EcoSmart sweatshirt(50/50 cotton/poly). For the shirt and socks, I microwaved them. Was worried the polyester in the sweatshirt might melt if I microwaved it. I had considered leaving it in my black car in the sun, as the interior gets quite hot. But it was too late in the day for that to really work. Ended up using a hand-held blow dryer on the sweatshirt for about 15 minutes after I'd put the Fixative on it. Worked really well! The color held and the white parts even stayed white! Should note that I did use hot water in every step along the way (to mix the dye, with the fixative) as well. For all items, i used the liquid Rit made for natural fabrics.

I habe a yellow hoodie I want to dye green, should I bleach the hoodies first before dying? Or just go over the hoodie with the dye?
@ritcolorcommunity
@ritcolorcommunity 4 жыл бұрын
For the best results, we recommend using our Rit Color Remover product to remove the yellow color before dyeing the hoodie green. If buying our Color Remover is not an option, then you can try and dye over the current color. As long as the green color is going to be darker than the yellow color, it should work. We do not recommend using bleach to remove the color prior to dyeing. Best of luck!

@ritcolorcommunity
@ritcolorcommunity 4 жыл бұрын
After you apply the dye, let it sit for 30 minutes. Then, put it in the microwave for two minutes (as long as the fabric doesn't have any metal parts). The microwave will apply the heat needed to set the dye. After it cools down, you are good to go!

How can you prevent red from bleeding? I followed all the steps! :(
@ritcolorcommunity
@ritcolorcommunity 3 жыл бұрын
Hi there! We found that dye bleeding usually happens in the rinsing process. Make sure to heat set in the microwave, apply ColorStay Dye Fixative right after dyeing, and rinse in cold water while fabric is still bound until rinse water runs clear-this step might take a while depending on how absorbent your fabric is. If you’re still having trouble, please reach out to our dye specialists at info@ritdye.com and they’ll help you troubleshoot.

How long does the dye last in the bottle? Can it be saved for another use?
@ritcolorcommunity
@ritcolorcommunity 4 жыл бұрын
Rit has an unlimited shelf life. When storing liquid dyes, be sure the cap is secure to prevent evaporation. Powder dyes should be stored in a cool, dry place. If you want to store powder dye after it has been mixed with water, you can do so in an airtight container.

Sorry about that! It sounds like there was unabsorbed dye still on the fabric that came off in the wash and went into the white areas. The best way to prevent this is to rinse really really well with cold water before the wash while the fabric is still bound up.

So why are soap and salt not used for this method ?
@ritcolorcommunity
@ritcolorcommunity 3 жыл бұрын
The soap is helpful when doing an immersive dye technique to get even coverage on the entire fabric, not totally necessary for the squeeze bottle method. Adding salt is also an optional step that helps the dye to penetrate the fabric, but there's already salt within our liquid formula! Hope this helps!

Hello, Napua. Yellow areas happen when the color seperates. There are a few ways to prevent this in the future. - Start with a dry shirt - Use less dye - Add more heat - Rinse well - Wash on cold right after dyeing We hope these tips are helpful for future dye projects.

Yes, you can start with a smaller amount of dye if you want a lighter color. Test the color before dyeing with a piece of paper towel. If the color is too light, add a little more dye. If the color is too dark, add more water.

If a microwave is not available, your item is too large, or your item contains metal; you can use a hair dryer to apply heat. Slowly apply heat by passing the hair dryer back and forth across the item about 2-3 inches from the surface. Do this process for about 2 minutes per side. If your item large or thick increase the time on each side.

Is the microwave part necessary or can they just sit in a grocery bag overnight? We always do shirts on vacation and obviously it was cancelled this year, so I have about 8 people making shirts.. it’d be easier to send them home with their own bag and let them do the washing rather than running 1 washer 8 times 🤪
@ritcolorcommunity
@ritcolorcommunity 4 жыл бұрын
Heat needs to be applied at some point! It opens up the fibers in the fabric to accept the dye. If you don't have a microwave, then you could leave the dyed fabric out in the hot sun for a few hours (if it's sunny and hot). That would probably be the easiest approach! You could also use hot water in your squeeze bottles.
