This is a great tip and how I run most of my blade baits. PRO TIP: Make sure you tie a SQUARE KNOT when you do your overhands instead of a “GRANNY knot”. It’s just a matter of which string goes over and under. A “granny knot” will come untied much much easier. It’s a very simple thing to avoid, but you are much more likely to lose fish eventually if you tie grannies instead of square knots.

Fantastic tip. I have been using this loop knot since I saw this video four years ago. Improved number of fish landed. Never had a loop untie, the hook always straightens out first. I use 80# braid and make sure to use a square knot to secure the loop.

Awesome Tony! I lost some nice Trout due to these garbage split rings getting stuck to the side of my spoon and Rapala. Everytime I jig the lure and when I see it reeling it in...the treble hook always has a tendency to get stuck sideways due to the split ring or get caught to the mainline. I learned this after a couple of tries and came out great. Im shaking the lure like crazy and doesn't get caught. Awesome works 👌

This really is a great trick for when your lure has fine gage wire for eyelets (where you would attach the split rings). Some lures come with really weak split rings.

I'm planning to go Tuna fishing here in Brazil next weekend and i want to give it a try. Im using industrial 3 strain nylon wire with a diameter of 1.5mm. After achieving the end result i noticed the knot can come undone! So i did a second attempt and in the very last stage of the knot (when the screwdriver is still in place) I put a few drops of superglue on the knot. I think it will work great now!

I'd also add a step of burning the tag ends of the line to prevent fraying over time
@HATINTHEKAT2 жыл бұрын
Thicker braid works great for this, I use 80lb braid. I cast jigs for king salmon and these hold up very well and helps prevent to fish “unbuttoning” themselves. The only modification I make is that I use the braided split ring to attach a spro power swivel which I then crimp on a si-wash hook to. Seems like overkill but on testing the braided split ring straight to a si-wash hook I noticed that the braid had a chance to actually slip through the crimped down eye of the open eye si-wash hooks. But with the swivel this eliminates that completely and really secures it all so there’s no chance of anything going wrong. Hope this helps someone out there keep that fish on haha
@HATINTHEKAT2 жыл бұрын
And I also use a lighter to burn the tags ends so they’re thicker and hard, to prevent the knots slipping out or anything

If you want just a touch of insurance on the security of that double overhand knot, two things; 1) pay attention to the direction of the second overhand knot...the lines should cross each other inside the knot (recommend looking that up) 2) a little drop of CA glue will make that a forever knot with no worries at all (even if you cut the tags a little too short).

Wondering if you use this braided "ring" technique, can you then use just a regular J hook instead of the inline hook? Since the hook is free to spin now not confined by the metal split ring....
@HATINTHEKAT2 жыл бұрын
Yeah you can really use a lot of different hooks, from heavy duty bass flipping hooks with the barb on it to hold a soft plastic bait to add to the action of the lure, or you can use a superline EWG hook with a worm or something as a trailer to make it less prone to snags! Lots of possibilities

Nice tip- question I saw the previous video with the braid built in - could shrink tubing work on the eye of the hook?
@tonyacevedo31494 жыл бұрын
It wouldn't be strong enough to hold the braid. On those hooks the braid is held on with epoxy.
@slacktide_angler3 жыл бұрын
Gonna need a better knot. It looks like the loop just further tightens over the stop knot as you pull- but we know thrashing fish don't give one consistent pull. I lost the only fish that would have put me in the derby running to this split ring. Pulled up my jig, no hook. Tied it exactly as shown, on a brand new 4/0 gamakatsu.
@robertbiermann46664 жыл бұрын
I follow up my fg knots with a dab of super glue on the cut tag ends, Dunno, maybe that would add some extra security as well.

robert biermann could work. They also recommend hitting the tag ends with a lighter to keep them from fraying open. Have to be very quick with it though.

video test?
@olinglures4 жыл бұрын
"That takes quite some time" yes, and that's why most People use Splitrings. The "freespinning" comes from your main Line, unless you glue the Lure directly on your Rod.
@tonyacevedo31494 жыл бұрын
Bluekingfisher as the fish turns and thrashes it’s not so much of the spinning, but the hooks locking up on the lure. Think of it like the hooks being fixed securely to the lure. Your line is pulling on the lure in one direction and if the fish pulls the opposite way the hooks can easily pop off.
@olinglures4 жыл бұрын
@@tonyacevedo3149 ok, please make a little test: hold just your main Line/leader in one Hand and the hook on the Lure in your other Hand, and now try to reproduce that Scenario while pull on both ends. That will just become a Problem when the Lure is fixed (in your Hand while landing) Otherwise the hook up was not perfect and you will loose the fish anyway
@notsure83273 жыл бұрын
this is just straight up false. This isn’t something you should bother with on standard cranks, etc. But bigger hard baits, this is 100% a thing. A big largemouth on a heavy spoon, 1oz+ cranks, and especially glide baits, when they jump and head shake, the weight of the lure itself spinning around can easily pop a treble hook out. This is common knowledge and there are a number of slow-motion videos demonstrating it. That’s why so many hard swimbaits/glides have swivels on their hook hangers. Triple trout, Jackall gantarell, g-ratt Pete series, etc. There are both objective demonstrations and loads of anecdotes backing this up. And in fact it’s very easy to test yourself as you suggested
@TracyAkuna8 ай бұрын
So all of the pro-tided swivel hook proponents are telling me that I need to remove the split rings on my Nomad saltwater jigs that I catch 40lb Bluefin tuna or 25lb Yellowtail with and tie on the hooks? A Pro Bass Tournament fisherman suggested to me at least 10 years ago that if you add 1 or 2 swivels to the back hook, the chance of a fish twisting off is eliminated. Just saying.
@gabrielduarte39043 жыл бұрын
in my village we call these assist hooks XD
@camojoe834 ай бұрын
Faulty reasoning behind this useless mod. Nothing has a solid grip on the front of your bait when there's a fish attached to it, so there's no restrictions on hooks' ability to twist. A single fish fight could never abrade thru a split ring but could definitely annihilate a loop of braid if everything isn't dead smooth. Nothing like having to retire the day's hot bait every time you catch a good one because you have to check/retie the soft shackles, or losing an entire hook and fish because there was a chip in the epoxy finish by the eye.

That would secure the hook snug to the eye. You want a loop for more freedom of movement of the hook.
