How to Tie Off Decorative Wraps: The Ultimate Guide

In this tutorial, I demonstrate how to prepare for and tie off a decorative wrap during your next custom fishing rod build. Whether it is a diamond, spiral, chevron, or any type of decorative wrap, you definitely need to watch this video if you do not know how to finish your wrap.

Thanks John, I was curious / interested as to how this was finished being tied off after watching the fish wrap. Was interest I why size A being used as all the decorative wrap & the tie off in size D, reasoning for using D over A & what size you used for the two tag wrap endings, A or D & why. I am also curious as to how all this looks after Epoxy being so up & down with the under wrap over wrap, size A & D tread. Thanks for your time & tuition. Been learning lots ( My brain hurts at times taking in all these new concepts of building rods ) I'll certainly be watching more of your videos. 🙏 Steve, Australia

Size D thread is good to use for a wrap, but so is Size A at times. I prefer to use size D for the over wraps and tie offs because it is easier to cover all of that thread work with. A larger thread size. As for the finish, I like to use a thinner one to ensure it penetrates all of that thread work and then you have to spend some time getting any bubbles out. Hope this helps.

What is the purpose of putting tag wraps on the end? Does it hold the decorative wrap better. Great video!

I am pretty new to this, so pardon the question if I am a bit out of line, but wouldn't the securing wraps not look smoother if you coated them with resin to smooth them out(from the raised decorative wraps under them) then once dry, go over the epoxy with another wrap??? Just thinking it would look a lot better. Thanks.

Great question Eric and you can do that if you like, but when using regular nylon thread, you won’t see the unevenness of the thread. Now that would be totally the opposite if you were using NCP thread as you would see every individual thread. Hope this makes sense, and thank you for watching.

Ok, I'm a complete beginner to rod building, so im gonna ask a newbie question.. Are wraps like this normally done from the front grip, going towards the first line guide?

Curious, why when you’re wrapping, do you relieve thread tension by backing off the thread bobbin? Instead of controlling tension with the bobbin wing nut? Great videos!! Very informative!

@@reelbluecustomrodsI gotcha! I was not critiquing your method. I was always taught to have the tension rod facing towards you almost level with the rod ( or 90deg to the tension rod base) when wrapping. Do you prefer a tighter or more loose wrapping method?

@@mattmatt2631 - no worries Matt, no offense taken. It all depends on that I am wrapping them it comes to tension. There are times I like a lot of tension when wrapping ( dragon scale and guide wraps) and other times I like very little tension (long spans/under wraps).
